Frazer Posted September 13, 2009 Report Posted September 13, 2009 Basketed 20 later bred yb for their first toss in the morning ranging really well, was going to take them 18 miles to sort the wheat from the chaff but bottling it a bit now was going to go a bit shorter do you guys think 18 miles is a bit to far for a first chuck.

Frazer Posted September 14, 2009 Author Report Posted September 14, 2009 Thanks for the advice guys took them about 12 mile in the end dropped a couple and they arrived in dribs and drabs but thats the first one out the way just pick the good days out now through the winter.
Roland Posted September 14, 2009 Report Posted September 14, 2009 Thanks for the advice guys took them about 12 mile in the end dropped a couple and they arrived in dribs and drabs but thats the first one out the way just pick the good days out now through the winter. Would say that you have done what is comfortable with yourself. That is good. I lost some from where they can see the loft - after ranging for hours. Also use to always go 30 odd mile for first chuck, and this seems far and away the best ever for me ... But I knew the birds they were bred from etc. Days end mucker they cause the heart to flutter a bit, and satisfatory result. What morew could one want!
peterpau Posted September 15, 2009 Report Posted September 15, 2009 The question is are we looking at distance or sprinters. If we are looking for distance 18 mile would be fine, as we are looking for birds with a good sence of direction. If we are looking for sprinters we need to teach them to home quickly, 18 mile is then too far and 10 would be enough. My own late breds will see a basket for the first time in may race in june and will go out to 270 mile.
Frazer Posted September 15, 2009 Author Report Posted September 15, 2009 Good point pete although new to this game i suppose everyones got their own way of doing things but having tossed my late ones from 12 miles first off i think im going to stick with that next year as a starting point.
