march 21st -june 21st but will be different for you as this is for the uk

I would take them off 6 weeks before, give them two weeks to set their "body clock" to the correct time, then you can begin training.
i do the same 6 weeks.

has any one tried the light system ! If so how does it work many thanks.gb

it works the opposite way to the dark system , i personally dont like it , have been to lofts that tried it , my concern was the birds were active most of the time and never seem to get any rest which is important for moulting birds

could any1 tell me for the darkness system, how dark does the loft have to be?

Posted

As a rule of thumb, the birds should come into their best form 10 weeks after they come off the dark. So the choice is to take them off on one of the following dates depending on what races you want to target. 5th, 12th or the 21st of June. I take mine off on the 5th.

quick question lads

my dad is starting to darken his young birds for the first time

the only thing is, he has a lack of space in his loft, so the yearlings are getting darkened down as well

is this at all harmful to the yearlings?

Posted

I have never darkened yearlings but I reckon it could be a good thing. If I did it I would make sure that they did not mate until after they come back to normal light. This way you can use their Spring to be a very good motivator. However they would need to be back on light much earlier than Mid June when the youngsters come off the dark.

Now this is something worth experimenting with.
