Not really, Most of people in my area train young birds at 10 miles. as same as for old birds...

what strait in at 10 miles

All of them are "Straight line" to home...

START AT FIVE MILES AND FINISH AT FIVE MILES , THATS AS FAR AS THEY GO

i and as far as you can walk and all lazy bones

12 to 15 miles first toss, go there 2 or 3 times. Then into 30 miles from then on. After couple of times at 30 miles up in no more than 2's and 3's.

Mine will have been roaming the countryside on open hole all summer so they know the way home. Never beat them back even on first toss.

last few seasons i have started at shotts 6 miles and then to carnwath 12 miles then bggar 16 miles thats about as far as they go and always have good returns :) :) :)

How do you do with regards to losing any with your birds on open hole all day, or do you not lose any more than you normally would

Last 3 seasons as follows:

2004 started with 75 ended with 67

2005 started with 65 ended with 49

2006 started with 60 ended with 54

always take through at least 50 yearlings for next years team.

Mind you most of their training is in 2's and I believe that helps alot along with ranging the countryside for hours all summer.

HOW MANY OF THE ONES YOU LOST WENT BEFORE THE TRAINING  AND RACING HAD STARTED ?

I have never loste more than about 2 off the loft, the others are normally lost from a hard training programme and racing every week.

start at six mls 2/3 times or untill it takes them longer then move them another 6 mls the same procedure all the way out to 40 mls every day dont miss a day weather permitting and if they do then its back to were they started but they must go every day as i beleive its not training but educating them which is more important .

whit were you training them for when you wurnae even racing ya eejit

better tained as young birds no use if not thats y dafty

me personally i think it builds up there heart and lungs for later on in life i would rather train my youngsers every day from 40/50 mls rather than race them as there ismoregood youngsers thrown away for the sake of winning a young bird race .

Sammy

i know a healthy pigeon should be able to fly 40 miles no problem, but don't you think rather than making them fitter for later in life it might take a bit too much out of them, mine will go 25 miles everyday weather permitting and then one or two tosses from 50 miles, just before the start of the season.

celtic u dont make a young bird fit by traing it if its not fit to begin with then it should not be there ,you educate it the more times its in the basket the more it gets to know what it should do and as its young how can you take more out of it ,thats they way i treat my young birds what you do with yours is up to you

how can you take more out of it ? quite simple really i would have thought, would you put a yearling racehorse over two miles  ? no or maybe you would, i asked a simple question and got the usual reply i should have expected, won't refer ant questions to you directly in future sammy ....no point.

I start mine at 16-20 miles I belive these short tosses ( 3-5 miles ) do more harm than good I lose a lot more at 5 than 15

I think the birds can see home at 5 miles and that defeats the purpose of training its just another opportunity to lose birds I dont worry so much about miles as time on the wing I think about 45 minutes to an hour is the perfect toss as the season gets nearer I start training 15 miles 2 times a day off the line of flight this sharpens them and cuts down on blowing past on fast short races

HAVE TO DISAGREE ON YOUR POINT ABOUT LOSING BIRDS FROM SHORT TOSSES, I HAVE TAKEN MY BIRDS TO THE SAMEPLACE OF ROUGHLY 5-6 MILES FOR THE LAST 8 YEARS AND WILL BE LUCKY IF I HAVE LOST TWO OR THREE AT MOST AND I CAN COMPARE MY LOSSES TO OTHER MEMBERS WHO TAKE THEM 15 -25 MILES AND SOMETIMES THEY SUFFER HORRENDOUS LOSSES AND WHEN IT COMES TO RACING I DONT LOSE ANY MORE THAN THEY DO SO I WILL STICK WITH SHORT ONES AS THEY HAVE STOOD ME WELL OVER THE YEARS AND NOTHING WOULD CONVINCE ME OTHERWISE

Haven't bothered much to race y/b's let alone race them. Will do this years I reckon. Many don't train at all till yearlings / 2 year olds, and then some just put into a race. Some even Nationals and done very well. If you have a family of birds you know their capabilities, if not, no good molley cuddling them till lost first test. If they are cntented, which means they like your st up, distance is irrelevant, they will home, and the first times race home... later if they are any good you will be able to do as you think is right by them.
