jimmy white Posted January 12, 2008 Report Posted January 12, 2008 i think their great ,,especialy when you get the birds carrying them in themselves , ive often seen them flying around with a tobacco stalk ,,,like doing a lap of honour ,, they dont look great,, but the pigeons seem to prefer them to most nesting materials ,, they def keep the nasties away from the youngsters in the nest ,, it often amazes me how some will build nests ,near touching the roof of the nest box yet others not so keen i am happy using tobacco stalks , but was advised to try pine needles , never got round to this , but would like to try it ,,,ive used lavender stalks , but i think with a decent nest of tobacco stalks , the air circulates better as the yb gets older, as their not lying on the base of the nestpan where it gets damp
PIGEON_MAN Posted January 12, 2008 Author Report Posted January 12, 2008 you can find a lot of info about them on this link under nesting material http://www.pigeonbasics.com/forum/blah/m-1168262567/s-0/ Cheers Tam knew i,d read about them somewhere on here.
Andkar Lofts Posted January 12, 2008 Report Posted January 12, 2008 have used tobacco stalks for No. years ,i find them excellent & as jimmy says no nasties to be found......last year also used shredded paper with tobacco stalks & that semed to work well also ............also put a beermat dipped in creosote ( alowed to dry) underneath nest bowl ............act as a " nastie" deterrent
homer Posted January 13, 2008 Report Posted January 13, 2008 my birds love em . would fully recommend them as nesting material.

lawrie Posted January 13, 2008 Report Posted January 13, 2008 you can get them from www.murrayandmills.co.uk. a good website and quick delivery!
matt Posted January 13, 2008 Report Posted January 13, 2008 How much are the tobacco stalks? the place where i get my corn do 2.5 kilo for £4.50 good stuff aswell cheeper than boddys
T_T Posted January 14, 2008 Report Posted January 14, 2008 Good as anything I've used. Something contained within the stalks are good for ridding the pans of mite. Only one drawback that I am aware of because of it happening to me, is that a stalk may occasionally pierce through a youngster so keep an eye open. .
