I think these may have been dicussed before but i was wondering what peoples thoughts were on using them for nesting material, have never used them before but was thinking of trying them this year.

i think their great ,,especialy when you get the birds carrying them in themselves , ive often seen them flying around with a tobacco stalk ,,,like doing a lap of honour :) ,, they dont look great,, but the pigeons seem to prefer them to most nesting materials ,, they def keep the nasties away from the youngsters in the nest ,, it often amazes me how some will build nests ,near touching the roof of the nest box yet others not so keen :)  i am happy using tobacco stalks , but was advised to try pine needles , never got round to this , but would like to try it ,,,ive used lavender stalks , but i think with a decent nest of tobacco stalks , the air circulates better as the yb gets older, as their not lying on the base of the nestpan where it gets damp

have used tobacco stalks for No. years ,i find them excellent & as jimmy says

no nasties to be found......last year also used shredded paper with tobacco stalks & that semed to work well also ............also put a beermat dipped in creosote ( alowed to dry) underneath nest bowl ............act as a " nastie" deterrent

Good as anything I've used.  Something contained within the stalks are good for ridding the pans of mite.  Only one drawback that I am aware of because of it happening to me, is that a stalk may occasionally pierce through a youngster so keep an eye open.

Our birds love them, use them all the time along with lavander stalks and heather (which costs nothing) and they use them all. :)

yes chicadee,, the old lavender stalks are good too, and they keep the nasties away, if im not mistaken [i usualy am ;D] i think they use lavender in some insect sprays ,,,never tried the heather, but would imagine that would be good as well,, and as you say,,,,cheaper ;D but for some reason the birds seem to like tobacco stacks ,,old dad used to use his woodbine ends [unlit ;D] sprinkle them around the nest bowl.. and it worked  ;D

You saying about the Woodbine ends Jimmy I knew a fancier that collected all his fag ends ('Players' he had a few bob ;D) and put them in a bucket of water for a few days then used this to spray out his loft and what was left he sprayed his roses with.
