the best way is  to clip them then let them out in the garden, as if you  will have plans for them  next year  some soap there wing  but dont see the point unless you where trying to race them the same year you get them just clip them    if you want them for stock  and let them roam about the garden  for a few weeks  ;)

with using strays for your feeders...you could be introducing all sorts of problems to your racing stock. besides why do you want to let your feeders out?? baffles me this one.

Not the same as if you are trying to break birds by holding them against their free will to go home. If these birds had been free to come and go when they first arrived,  and chose to stay with you, I'd say give them their liberty right away.

If on the other hand, you got them in and didn't allow them back out, I'd still say try them now. There is always the danger that they will clear for home at any time. Best to know that now, rather than find out when they are raising youngsters.

I would caution against doing anything that restricts birds flying; they have quite enough to contend with in the wild as it is when fully airworthy.

If you are serious about racing pigeons mate take it from me and probably EVERYONE on this site just dispose of them and I mean dispose of them as they are no good for you. The chances of breeding a good one are very remote. it is possible, but remote. Don't even think about shall I or shall I not just get rid and get some from  someone you know who  is a good steady flyer and then you are going on a quicker route to success. Make up your own mind but listen to what I've said and bet by the end of the night no one comes on here and says I'm wrong because probably most of us have done the same as you and found out later it was wrong.  Even although they are feeders better to forget Good Luck anyway ;)

Sorry, not picking you up here. Are you saying these are strays that have come to your loft of their own free will, or have you collected from other lofts that got them in as strays? If they strayed to another loft, the likelihood is that when free they will go back to it.

Every stray is either bred off a winner or breeders of winners or nest mate to a winner etc etc. Honestly it is just what people spout to save themselves having to splash out on carriage to get them back. Get rid off them. If you need birds approach some of the local fanciers they will only be glad to help and get another member in their club.

Why would anybody want to keep strays they have been given????

Hi Alf,I reported a young bird from Ardrossan to the fancier,I managed to get the bird along with four others upto NewCumnock. Two weeks later this yb was I believe racing from Cockensie and returned to my loft in West Cumbria. If I had sent one pigeon that distance on it's own what chance would I have of getting it back.I phone the owner agian ,who asked me if I would like to keep the bird. It's a cracking red pied cock ,I will give it a chance, hope it becomes a fed winner.

if i was you van reet i would contact the owners of the birds that said you could have them sort the transfor out other wise if you do manage to break them they will still have the old owners details

If he lets them out and they go into another fancier and the other fancier reports the bird who has to pay to have it picked up?

If they haven't been transfered the true owner picks the bill up.

a stray is a lost bird...doesnt mean because its lost its crap..i transffered a stray back a few years...well that topped the welsh north road fed for me over 4000 birds....not all are crap....but a good majority will be!

i used to be known for turning strays into card winners.

but one old fellow said to me once...you have to put something into the birds to get something out...didnt understand then but i do now!

you only get something out of them if your prepared to put the effort into them. ;)
