Premier Posted January 30, 2009 Report Posted January 30, 2009 After pairing my pigeons on Saturday, two old cocks had a massive fight on Monday and the 5year old cock seems to have gone downhill very quickly since, he wont eat and the weight is falling off him, i managed to get him to take some peanuts tonight but he is still looking bad. Any suggestions as to the problem may be
Guest joshdonlan Posted January 30, 2009 Report Posted January 30, 2009 Could be something caused by stress?

Any suggestions as to the problem may be could this cock already have been unwell but not noticeable, maybe the other cock picked on him for this reason...as cocks will pick on weakened cocks.
blaz Posted January 30, 2009 Report Posted January 30, 2009 put him in a pen so he can only SEE his hen some pigeon tonic and peanuts small seed and a little maze this is just my opinion done it years ago and worked a treat
OLDYELLOW Posted January 30, 2009 Report Posted January 30, 2009 brewers yeast tablet lock him up hes obviously upset due to fighting suppose you could say hes lost his sparkle / confidence due to been beaten by the other cock and when he tried to go to floor to eat then other cock will chase him off

Agree, pairing up puts extra stress on the birds and anything that is a bit down or weak could find it too much.Maybe just try and rest him and build him back up.Do you have any electrolytes and abit of conditioning seed?.When was he last wormed or cankered?.
Premier Posted January 30, 2009 Author Report Posted January 30, 2009 Thanks for all your replies, he was last cankered before pairing, have not wormed for years but i have droppings tested regulary, i think this is a bit more than stress and maybe he was already ill hence the fight, i have locked him up with his hen but unsure what to treat for, need to do something now as will not get another test result back until tuesday
Guest joshdonlan Posted January 30, 2009 Report Posted January 30, 2009 just try a bit of cider vineger and garlic on a 2 day cycle
Taylorsloft Posted January 30, 2009 Report Posted January 30, 2009 give him some honey melt it down with warm water
kev01293 Posted January 30, 2009 Report Posted January 30, 2009 hi premier im not a old hand by any means but would agree with blaz and oldyellow on this and separate the cock so he,s alone with his hen as blaz says try tempting him with some peanuts, maize, small seeds and a pigeon tonic/vitamins if u have them his confidence has taken a battering as well as himself so maybe he will perk up on his own just keep your eye on him good luck kev
dod grant Posted January 30, 2009 Report Posted January 30, 2009 how long have you kept pigeons premier and are you a novice if that is the case you will get it right next time cocks will fight if you are there or not .
ALF Posted January 30, 2009 Report Posted January 30, 2009 Personally i dont like cocks that try and bully everything in their section and i certainly dont like the weaklings that give in and sulk for days after it and both seem to have a severe problem with their necks in my loft for some reason ;)
Guest Owen Posted January 30, 2009 Report Posted January 30, 2009 It sounds like severe stress to me. If it is the cocci count and or the canker count could go flying up. Stress can do this. Have a droppings test and a swob test quickly to check this out. You can help the bird by shutting him up in his box and only letting him out when he is not going to be threatened by stronger birds until he is better. Cock pigeons are bonded to their box and making sure that he feels safe will do wonders for his confidence. I hope this helps Owen
doo Posted January 30, 2009 Report Posted January 30, 2009 Do you have fronts on your boxes ...if so put some card up on one sde with t nest bowl in this will make the cock feel safe ....I always done this so sittng hens felt secure & did not lift off the nest anytime anyone or bird were at the box.
Guest IB Posted January 30, 2009 Report Posted January 30, 2009 Any bird that's taken a beating will sulk for a few days. Leave the pair locked up, his hen is the only medicine he needs and she will soon bring him round.
Premier Posted January 30, 2009 Author Report Posted January 30, 2009 thanks for your comments sportka and ib, much appreciated. i will just keep an eye on him. thanks again.

Any suggestions as to the problem may be first of all, your not a bad fancier , your asking advise and help, your not asking for abuse, as far as i see, sometimes members are better not replied to, as this is what they seem to thrive on, no one is perfect keeping pigeons , no matter how long you have, or have not kept them,, the best of fliers make the biggest bloomers , that im afraid is part of the game , however some learn by their mistakes others dont , as far as your 5 year old cock is concerned , he seems to have taken a real beating, the bird will probably be very stressed out,, possibly open to infections , my advice would be much the same as most that have replied , the bird will need boxed on his own, preferably in a warm quiet place,, i would try him with a little conditioner, with some glucose or honey in his water , lets hope he recovers and gains his condition and doesnt succumb to any higher count of cocci, or any stress related infections ,best of luck to you mate
