ribble Posted April 2, 2009 Report Posted April 2, 2009 If they had been rubbing the feathers, would they grow back now or when moulting?
Larry Lucas Posted April 3, 2009 Report Posted April 3, 2009 I had this problem one year -- A Permethrin dip eliminated the problem -- plunged them into a five gallon bucket of the mixture until they were soaked. After the moult their new feathers came in and they were beautiful.
Guest IB Posted April 3, 2009 Report Posted April 3, 2009 If they had been rubbing the feathers, would they grow back now or when moulting? The feather shafts are broken, and the bird holds them until the moult.
peterpau Posted April 3, 2009 Report Posted April 3, 2009 The feather shafts are broken, and the bird holds them until the moult. Yes had same problem don't know the cause feathermite or feeders but treated for both possibilities and yes they do take time to come back.
Guest Posted April 3, 2009 Report Posted April 3, 2009 If it is de-pluming mite ivermectin alone will not get rid of it. The best way to treat is Ivomectin injectable two small drops straight into the throat followed by a pyrethrum dip, which can be found in Johnsons dog flea shampoo! Once dry cover area with vaseline (seals mites in). May need a few dips. Buy some Nippon ant powder and after cleaning out dust it everywhere! Blow torch too if you have one.
Guest IB Posted April 3, 2009 Report Posted April 3, 2009 There's been a lot on this on here over the years. Might be some more help in the links below. Like everything in pigeons seems to be different things behind the problem, got to know what that is before you can treat it properly. No expert, just fair memory from the number of threads put up here on the subject. Causes vary from quill mite, depluming mite, rubbing on feeders and drinkers, to a fungus (feather rot is either a mite or a fungus). Not all but some of threads on these:- http://forum.pigeonbasics.com/m-1180259086/s-14/highlight-bare+patch/#num14 http://forum.pigeonbasics.com/m-1177597492/s-5/highlight-bald+patch/#num5 http://forum.pigeonbasics.com/m-1185462097/s-0/

Guest IB Posted April 3, 2009 Report Posted April 3, 2009 the only thing that works 100% is frontline for dogs. no need for anything else problem solved Been asking about Frontline for yonks. The vet, late Frank Harper recommended this on his video, but didn't give any information on how to use it. Made for cats and dogs, but each appears to be different? Is it a spray or a cream?
harky Posted April 4, 2009 Report Posted April 4, 2009 Try the horse wormer EQUAVLAN this kills every parasite that is on the bird gauranteed, 1inch added to a little boiling water to help it dissolve , add this to a 2ltr drinker and let the birds drink this dry , repeat this a fortnight later and you will be parasite free for months :) :)

IB are you sure Frank Harper has died? I'm sure my mate was talking to him the other week.
Guest IB Posted April 4, 2009 Report Posted April 4, 2009 IB are you sure Frank Harper has died? I'm sure my mate was talking to him the other week. Sorry about this. It was Frank Harper's video, but I've somehow confused him with David Palmer, who passed away in 2002. The times I've watched Frank's video thinking that it was sad he'd not made more 'before we lost him'. Again apologies for any distress I may have caused.
ribble Posted April 4, 2009 Report Posted April 4, 2009 No problem IB. By the way it was David Palmer who advised me to treat while they were feeding the young.
