pjc Posted April 1, 2009 Report Posted April 1, 2009 have your droppings tested then if they need worming treat the youngsters when weaned and the adults while sitting the next round of eggs.
DJ Posted April 1, 2009 Author Report Posted April 1, 2009 a was given a pair of old birds that went on to breed but while cleaning out the loft i noticed something that looked like worms in the cock birds droppings i have a tube of equest pramox for my birds and was going to use that soon anyway for the worms/lice/mites my birds (not the gift pair) were tested late last year but came back clear of any worms but now that ive noticed what look like worms in my gifted pair of birds i was hoping to worm all of my birds asap before they all get infected :-/ debbie

PIGEON_MAN Posted April 1, 2009 Report Posted April 1, 2009 is it safe to use horse wormer containing moxidectin and praziquantel on the pigeons with 10 day old yb,s still in the nest debbie Why do fanciers even think about using stuff thats not for pigeons when there are plenty of things on the market that are made for them.
Guest Freebird Posted April 1, 2009 Report Posted April 1, 2009 Probably same as me, because she has horses and worms them then what's left gets used for the birds. Main thing is to get the dose right. I would'nt do them until youngsters are weaned and I would'nt do youngsters until at least 12 weeks. Maybe just get them on something natural to inhibit the worms meantime. Are you sure it was worms?
Guest shadow Posted April 1, 2009 Report Posted April 1, 2009 would not worm while feeding young birds
Guest Posted April 1, 2009 Report Posted April 1, 2009 should never use moxidectin or ivermectin on ybs under 4-6 weeks old.
kev01293 Posted April 1, 2009 Report Posted April 1, 2009 i had the horse wormer cos my brother has horses and as equest horse wormer has moxedectin in it (which is supposed to also kill lice/mites on pigeons) i thought i would try it,plenty of fanciers use horse wormers so i couldnt see a problem using it as long as i get the dosage right, how do you administer yours freebird and what dosage ? any other advice also appreciated from other fanciers who have used horse wormers regarding the dosage debbie

If its the dip then just goes in the bath (3 caps per gallon i think but will check if you want)
Premier Posted April 1, 2009 Report Posted April 1, 2009 Is it ok to train birds while on any treatments?
jimmy white Posted April 1, 2009 Report Posted April 1, 2009 i wouldnt worm birds if feeding young, or training
Guest Posted April 1, 2009 Report Posted April 1, 2009 i wouldnt worm birds if feeding young, or training :-/ why not.
ALF Posted April 1, 2009 Report Posted April 1, 2009 Personally i would'nt treat for anything while the parents are feeding young...
ribble Posted April 1, 2009 Report Posted April 1, 2009 In the past i have used Equvalan horse wormer on birds feeding young, it was advised by the vet. The young took no harm at all, in fact one went on to race well and breed a RPRA UK Long distance Champion.
jimmy white Posted April 1, 2009 Report Posted April 1, 2009 :-/ why not. because worming takes a little out of the pigeon, therefore not really fit to train,,or feed yb,s ,,, it,ll take more out the yb,s in the nest, the yb,s droppings would become loose,, and even one set back in rearing yb,s can result in a imperfect young bird
NW USA Posted April 1, 2009 Report Posted April 1, 2009 Use rubber gloves when using Equvalen/Ivermectin or you'll be worming yourself.
Guest gladdo Posted April 2, 2009 Report Posted April 2, 2009 wait until finishing rearing and just do them all and they will be fine mate ...be lucky mikey
Guest IB Posted April 2, 2009 Report Posted April 2, 2009 Think I'd be testing the parents droppings, and leaving any necessary treatment till after youngsters are weaned. If the parents have intestinal worms, they can't infect a youngster in the nest through feeding. Re-infection doesn't work that way. But if you do treat parents while feeding, then the wormer will certainly be passed from parent to youngster, and damage to the youngster's intestine is likely to follow.
