John k Posted January 21, 2010 Report Posted January 21, 2010 No doubt the question as been asked many times before Plz excuse me for asking it again but what floor substrate do ppl use in there lofts? I have tried Easi bedding, Hemcore it's ok when it 1st goes down then after a week or so then begins to clog and stick to your feet then trampling it all over garden I have also used Sand, now sand i found was ok but my hens started eating it for some unknown reason which put me off it so i removed it all...Even though they get fresh Matrix everyday, when they where eating it they where passing in through in there droppings put wind up me a little because i thought of compaction in the crop of the pigeons... Now thinking of going bck to Sand with loft whitener added this time whats your thoughts?

John k Posted January 21, 2010 Author Report Posted January 21, 2010 Do you not crush the granules when you go in and out the loft walking on them therefore causing dust as i presume the granules are made of wood?
John k Posted January 21, 2010 Author Report Posted January 21, 2010 easy bedding i use all the best. Hi i have also used easi bedding, and Hemcore found it nice bang on when it 1st gets put down but after a week or so it tends to clump to the bottom of your feet having been soiled on therefore then trampling it all over the garden... Do you get that problem.

blackdog Posted January 21, 2010 Report Posted January 21, 2010 Do you not crush the granules when you go in and out the loft walking on them therefore causing dust as i presume the granules are made of wood? Granulated Floorcovering (Anti-Coccidiosis) Natural Granulated Floorcovering is a natural product consisting of lava drawn from the subsoil. The treatment and the granulation of this particularly porus substance offer it an exceptional absorbing power: 1kg of granules can easily absorb 1 litre of water. Thanks to this the Granulated Floorcovering guarantees perfect hygiene in the loft. When the pigeons droppings fall on the granules, they dry in no time, which stops the contamination cycle by parasites. The use of Granulated Floorcovering pratically stops maturation of the oocysts of coccidiosis and of the eggs of the ascarids. Moreover the granules absorb the smell of the droppings. It can stay in the loft for one year provided it is raked weekly. When the granules and droppings are removed from the loft they can be used as excellent fertilizer in the vegetable and flower garden. Natural Granulated Floorcovering - a bag of 20kg covers 1.5 m2
DOVEScot Posted January 21, 2010 Report Posted January 21, 2010 Rake the easybed everyday and add Stalosan F once a week, this keeps it dry and kills the bad bacteria and worm eggs http://www.flytesofancy.co.uk/chickenhouses/Stalosan_F_Disinfectant.html Stalosan F Disinfectant powder is a very effective, and DEFRA recommended, dry disinfectant powder for use in the poultry house. Broad spectrum, destroys worm eggs, coccidial occysts, fly eggs and larvae. Anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, anti-viral. Highly absorbant and will help to reduce the ammonia smell created by the chicken's droppings.

hepste Posted January 22, 2010 Report Posted January 22, 2010 I have tried many things, but have finally found an agreeable floor covering, which is coarse woodchip, obtained from a local source. It is relayively dust fee, and is big enough not to be blown everywhere. Although it requires to be turned over now and then, it keeps dropping off the floor, and creates a good environment. I change mine every 3 months, or when I start getting the smell of ammonia.

greenlands Posted January 22, 2010 Report Posted January 22, 2010 Hi wilkins, what litter do you use,I'm a scraper man but considering something different for the young birds this season ???? Lindsay
