I can't condone the lack of communication by some couriers, but considering the lack of couriers and the enormous demand from fanciers nationwide, and not just the few on here, I feel we should think ourselves lucky that we have any couriers at all considering the 'flack' they seem to get. The ones that have been to me ALL say the same, they are sick of the knocks they continually seem to get from fanciers. We should be helping them to help us, or we will soon be in a situation where we have NONE at all, then everyone will be whinging. Fair enough to have a courier to deliver 100 miles or more but to book one to do a pick up and delivery for 40 and 50 miles away (which I know has happened) is just stupidity.

Personally I did a 300 mile round trip yesterday (50mpg @ £5 a gal = £30), from Norwich, to Harlow - Kent - Isleworth in Middlesex and back home, rather than burden the overloaded couriers. All it needs is a bit of planning, so come on lads and lasses, help the couriers to help us before we end up without any at all.

bob  all i ask is that they keep in contact  i was texted to tell me my birds where being picked up and the ones to go the other way all arranged 2 of the pick ups where not very pleased when phoned and told aprox pick up time  for no to turn up surely if a problem has cropped up its not too much  for them to phone and cancell rather than not turn up at all i am not the only one read the thread

cheers Alan

Bob, they are in business to make money. Good luck to them but those that do not provide the service should not survive. I think we have a duty to each other to report when things go wrong as we do when things go right, that way we get the good uns and lose the poor ones, if we don't we go around in circles with this problem for a long time; and in my experience the ones who do the whinging are the ones not providing the best service.

I too had a text telling me when they would be picked up . And for me the courier is not providing a good service picking up on a saturday in the middle of a race from over the channel, when my loft is a couple of miles from my home address, and my loft is in a farmer's field so can't give him a sat nav location!

Well said Albear. Think many are rueing the day Amtrax packed up .... and I know that you had a few run in with them lol.

Remember speaking to them regards a pick up from you. Went to give your addie, She butted in 'No need, we well know where Mr albear lives etc. ;D ;D

But like I said then, and still hold today, they literually handles thousands a week, and a % of crap happens. I use to get on great with the local one here, and foretunately, like 1000's more, never had a problem. Still, dreams of yesteryear .... Chuff chuff whoo uuu. Yes the trains were first class, and so very reliable, and handled 1000's too.... zzzzzzzzzzzzz

Yeah Roland , the welli depot wanted to charge me £67 for 4 birds!!! Spoke to thenm several times, the lass in the office came back to me and said the boss had told me to take it or leave it!!! So I rang head office and eventually the correct price was agreed. Amtrak in Barnsley were fantastic, great service, good bloke!!! Yes amtrak were very good in my opinion, the only problem I had was with that overcharge when I moved here first!

BWF, Albear and Roland, I agree with you all totally, as I said from the outset of my post, I don't accept poor communication from ANY courier. Yes they are all in business to make money, and all should take the knocks with the pats on the back. Most of these people who are doing courier work are 'one man bands' and I think they all take on a lot more than they can cope with, hence the lateness and letting people down. But at the end of the day there is far too much work out there for the couriers available, and for them to think they can cope with it all, they are kidding themselves. Whether we like it or not, we are all going to be let down by them, either by them refusing the work because they have full orders OR by not meeting the delivery deadlines that were set. If these couriers were to stick to the letter of the law regarding hours driving in a 24 hour period or, NOT answering phones while driving, then I think we would ALL be deeper in the mire than we are now. I agree that AMTRAK done a fantastic job, but even they had there knockers. I am old enough to remember when the good old steam train was the only way of transporting pigeons, but people even moaned then, because they had to go to the station/goods depot to pick them up. The point of my post was to say that, IF we all helped ourselves a little more, rather than relying on other people to do things that we could do ourselves, then it would ease the, already over loaded, burden on the few couriers we have out there, who TRY BUT DON'T ALWAYS SUCCEED, in providing us with a good service.

I am, in no way looking for arguments, sticking up for one courier against another, or trying to knock the knockers.

Well what kinda service would you like how would people like to see it ran ??

Good post Chris, That's what we would all expect in an ideal world, BUT unfortunately we all know that we don't live in one. Not even Amtrak provided ALL the points you made, and certainly not points 1,3, and 4 from my experiences.

Hopefully someone will come up with a dedicated service that provides all your points and on a large enough scale to satisfy the needs of everyone.

It's about time the RPRA did something constructive regarding this situation. JMO

Chris, I think number one on your list is the key. I think it would be advantageous for all couriers to have a cucstomer service charter. In this charter they will list their rules and what they will provide and also what theyexpect of us as fanciers after all this is a two way thing.

Important areas for me are

1 How to contact them and what times contact can be made

1 Where do they deliver

2 Frequency? If it varies depending on location, guidelines on the different frequencies

3 Delivery times and days. If a courier wishes to pick up from 5 am in the morning for example they need to specify. What is the latest time they will deliver (except in emergencies).

4 Period of notice required for deliveries, i.e. do they need a week's notice, does this vary by area of delivery?

4 A guarantee that they will deliver when they say they will, unless there are exceptional circumstances (motorway closed etc).

5 The cost of deliveries, what they will provide as part of the service.

6 A complaints procedure and if proven compensation.

7 A complants procedure for the courier to the RPRA for fancier's that abuse them.

And several other things I'm sure that I have missed off the top of my head!

If you had each courier's terms/customer charter you could make an informed choice and we would quickly find the best couriers.
