ally mac Posted November 26, 2009 Report Posted November 26, 2009 For the last 2 years I have started the seasons with a few pied birds, looking at what I have left after them flying to me there are none, a few white flights and a couple with small white markings but no pieds. Mr peregrine must like them right enough. Pity as I like them!! Does anybody else find this?
billt Posted November 26, 2009 Report Posted November 26, 2009 I'm ok with pieds and light grizzles but cant keep reds or mealys
chichichi Posted November 26, 2009 Report Posted November 26, 2009 all our pieds get taken first by the peregrin.. what they say is whatever stands out of the batch.. so if you had 20 white birds and a black one the peregrin can lock onto the black better.. with us we get a few pieds every year and these normally get hit by percy.. best of luck ant
fastblack Posted November 26, 2009 Report Posted November 26, 2009 why dont u try dying your birds all the same colour
Guest BIRD_MAN_JOHN Posted November 26, 2009 Report Posted November 26, 2009 dont no what the probs are with pieds, i started with 11 and still got 11 after 3 years 15 mealys after 3 years and ive lost more b/b-and cheq. cant just blame the bop for the loses. and believe me ive got bops here theres more now than its ever been.
Guest j.bamling Posted November 26, 2009 Report Posted November 26, 2009 they seem to pick the reds and mealys out here Ally
Guest bakes Posted November 26, 2009 Report Posted November 26, 2009 never lost any pieds to pergrine always been dark chequers for some reason.
ally mac Posted November 26, 2009 Author Report Posted November 26, 2009 they seem to pick the reds and mealys out here Ally My team is mostly blue and dark cheqs now jimmy. Only bred one red this year and she's still here.
blaz Posted November 26, 2009 Report Posted November 26, 2009 red is their target lost a few good ones
Guest stb- Posted November 26, 2009 Report Posted November 26, 2009 pieds not to bad reds and mealys , cant keep them long enough to race :B :B
hotrod Posted November 26, 2009 Report Posted November 26, 2009 as far as im concerned it matters not the colour of the birds they take and its always the good ones .
ally mac Posted November 26, 2009 Author Report Posted November 26, 2009 as far as im concerned it matters not the colour of the birds they take and its always the good ones . Sods law isnt it, I have had some lovely doos from malky Brown, when I was collecting them this year he handed me a cracking pied cock, I said how I liked them and he said so do the bleeding hawks. The doo never made it to the end of the season. Maybe its just coincidence all mine are gone this year.
greenlands Posted November 26, 2009 Report Posted November 26, 2009 Living just outside the Lake District we get our fair share of peregrines and I can asure you percy dosen't mind what colour the birds are if he's hungry he'll follow them into the loft.Early this season I could have hit on with the scraper she was really hungry. They wait for one to loose it's nerve and break away from the flock and go after it.That's if they can't surprise them.I have my fair share of pieds most are still here. Here's a 05, hen races nearly every week, been over the water a few times, fingers crossed will be going back over next season.

Guest frank dooman Posted November 26, 2009 Report Posted November 26, 2009 as far as im concerned it matters not the colour of the birds they take and its always the good ones . your right stuart you know my theroy on that a good bird has a different wing beat and percy see,s that as different/weakness or just plain easy to pick out
Thimbles Posted November 26, 2009 Report Posted November 26, 2009 Aye its funny everyone has a different story, nice wee doo. Al. yes everyone has a different story so in my opinion the hawks dont care what colour of birds they take as long as it gets a meal try putting terror eyes on your birds wings
Thimbles Posted November 26, 2009 Report Posted November 26, 2009 as far as im concerned it matters not the colour of the birds they take and its always the good ones . the good ones can outfly a peregrin if its not taken on the initial dive
Guest Owen Posted November 26, 2009 Report Posted November 26, 2009 It's mealies with me. I have a red cheq cock that has produced winners consistantly but just as consistantly the peregrine gets the mealies from them. One thing I have noticed though, the widowhood cocks seem to be better at coping with the peregrine than any other bird. My problem is that period in Spring, after I let them out and before they have time to get themselves fit. Youngsters learning to fly are like picking cherries and breeders are only marginally better. Regarding colour. A Gamekeeper/Falconer once told me that individual falcons have their preferences in terms of colour. He claimed that it is a lot to do with the colours that they has been successful in hunting when they first started to hunt. But at the end of the day they will take what they can get.
billt Posted November 26, 2009 Report Posted November 26, 2009 Yeh Owen thats why I keep mine on open loft all year, They don't stand much chance when they're not sharp
hotrod Posted November 26, 2009 Report Posted November 26, 2009 the good ones can outfly a peregrin if its not taken on the initial dive well mate after speaking to loads of fanciers all over the country you always hear of a bad toss or race and their good cock or hen is the only one still to come ,it happens all the time week after week ,the ones that dont get hit are usually very clever and just hide in a tree till the danger has passed .
Thimbles Posted November 26, 2009 Report Posted November 26, 2009 go look at some videos on youtube it shows you racing pigeons outflying peregrins and thats allways made me laugh people going on about losing there best pigeons the best pigeons are the ones that made it home from the race and not every pigeon lost is lost to a BOP
blackdog Posted November 26, 2009 Report Posted November 26, 2009 the good ones can outfly a peregrin if its not taken on the initial dive good ones dont outfly the peregrin up here in cumbria mate, no chance
