  5. THE 2016 DERBY ARONA TENERIFE ONE LOFT RACE STARTS HERE Late November and it’s a hive of activity as preparations were being made around the loft for the forthcoming first training race on Dec 2nd, with a record number of entries ever received in its ten previous years of existence, there has been a huge increase in work load to maintain and keep the pigeons, loft surroundings in a clean and healthy environment , this has obviously had a knock on effect on the administration side of things in the form of a slight delay in individually photographing the pigeons currently being housed as in previous years , but rest assured this will hopefully be done prior the activation period later in the month so that participants can see their entries and how they have matured since entering the loft during the past months. 12193720_189661941373350_8114045803673094391_n On the 26th Nov i had the opportunity of flying out to Tenerife for a week to celebrate our youngest daughter Megan`s 16th birthday, which incidentally coincided with the first training race on 2nd Dec. image003 All loaded and ready for the off On Monday 30th Nov we had had pre-arranged and welcomed the opportunity of travelling from play de Las Americas to meet up with the Arona team and view the pigeons at the Guaza lofts , on our arrival we were welcomed by Jose and Abel Ledesma and witnessed the pigeons during their daily exercise the fitness and health was clearly seen, as they scoured the warm canarian skies above us, I’m informed that each day the pigeons are exercised for about three hours at their liberty around the lofts, with the occasional, flagging to encourage them to fly, its during this time the lofts are cleaned and drinkers disinfected routinely to rule out any cross contamination and illnesses before being allowed back in for feeding, the feed that the pigeons are currently being fed on is a light mixture due to the high temperatures, which will slowly be altered to a heavier mix as the training and racing program progresses, both of which are sourced from the Belgium grain merchants natural, after witnessing a work in progress in and around the lofts and Jose keen to return to the administration in preparation for the forthcoming race, we didnt outstay our welcome but made plans to return for the race two days later to see the pigeons arrive from training race one. Wednesday morning And after experiencing the “Calima†which had shadowed the island for the past few days at first hand which consists of a cloudy grit effect atmosphere, we were greeted that morning with the best day of our stay, blue skies little wind and i was informed that it was going to be a good day when mount Teide which is 3718 meters high the highest mountain in Spain and an idyllic, backdrop to the lofts, is snow capped as it was that day,. myself and Meg dually made our way to the lofts at 08.45 after consulting the night before with Jose on his plans for liberating .on arrival we found that the pigeons had been basketed Tuesday evening and loaded on the transporter with drinkers on overnight and were just about ready to set off on the short journey to the liberation site for a planned liberation at 09.30, we dually took up our positions to await the news on the liberation, during the waiting period, Jose kept us up to date as to what was happening on site and commented on the increasing number of interested parties viewing the live stream, to witness the race as it unfolded, after giving the pigeons time to settle the strings were cut releasing the 2…. at 09.45 into clear blue skies and rising temperatures reaching 26 degrees, at that time, indicating the 2016 race series was underway. image005 Race 1 winner – Carlo Gyselbrecht After a short wait as we searched the sky above a single pigeon was spotted heading towards the loft at 09.53, we sat patiently to see the intentions of this pigeon but were under the impression that this was not to be one of the entries as it got closer and didn’t seem to recognize its home , however just as we looked elsewhere for a more positive sighting, this pigeon circled high above the loft clearly preparing to land, indicating that it was to be the start of the pigeons returning , in a matter of seconds the numbers had increased and there was now around fifteen to twenty pigeons dancing around the skies high above us as we awaited for the first to land and cross the finishing line to take the top honor, it was during this time on the horizon we spotted the first mass of pigeons zig zagging towards us from across the banana plantations in their hundreds race up to the lofts, a sight i recommend anyone to witness, a few moments later which possibly seemed like a life time for most viewing via the computer the first couple of arrivals dropped onto the loft roof and landing board and once realizing that they were home took a short pause as the winning pigeon entered the trap. The winner on this the first training race was an entry for the Belgium fancier Carlo Gyselbrecht with pigeon named “Kompany†timing in at 09.56.17 some forty seconds later there was a scramble for the remaining positions as pigeons made their way into the lofts resulting in 2nd position going to the golden ladies syndicate representing a European consortium with their entry Athos timing in at 09.57.00 3rd was tom van der Kamp from the Netherlands with his Golden Ladies - 2nd position Race 1 Golden Ladies – 2nd position Race 1 entry Uranus on 09.57.00.70,4th was a second arrival for team belgium this one was for team Marc Bert Racing Pigeon Photography with Elmidio at 09.57.21.55, in 5th and 6th place was the Netherlands fancier and previous years car winner Hok M.Reijnen with two of his entries Melodia and Barry timing in at 09.57.32.85 and 09.57.39.20 respectivly, 7th and it was team Czech republic Lubomir Kubacek with entry Secret on 09.57.39.85 closely followed in by three for team Germany with walking in the wind for Team Waz taking 8th with a time of 09.57.43.80, Alexander gebel and atlantic + in 9th on 09.57.46.45 and rounding off today’s top ten was Rolf Schlomer and his entry Muenchen at 09.57.47.30. The first arrival for team uk/ireland for this first outing was team flash in 13th position with their entry Spirit timing just behind the leading pigeons at 09.57.53.85. Paul-Heinz Wesjohann - 1st position race 2 Paul-Heinz Wesjohann – 1st position race 2 The winning two pigeon for race two was for team Germany with Paul-Heinz Wesjohann entry Rooey taking the top spot at 10.11.56 a clear two minutes in front of second arrival of fellow countrymen team S.A.S with their pigeon Miss Wonderduk timing in at 10.13.22, 3rd place and 1st Uk pigeon went to team ultimate Syn with Ultimate super on 10.13.31,4th position went to team Italy and Ferngully on 10.13.39 closely followed in 5th by local Tenerife fancier Jose Martín Gonzalez with his entry hail Mary at 10.13.41, team Croatia takes 6th place with Simun at 10.13.43, in 7th it was the march 2015 winning final syndicate Team Leyen-Paloma Belgie with their pigeon Patrica on 10.13.56 8th position goes to a third arrival for team Germany with team Klass & Sohn coming in at 10.14.01,9th goes to the Gran Canarian pigeon Ali Baba for team Yahvé & Oliveiro at 10.14.07, just head of team Rumania and syndicate Tudor Valentin & Matia on 10.14.08 which rounds off today’s top ten. Team SAS - 2nd position in race 2 Team SAS – 2nd position in race 2 Following on from the leading pigeons the remainder of the pigeons once again could clearly be seen to return in large number over the following few minutes and whilst a few are still learning about the trapping procedure on their return that we previously mentioned, this will come in time once the team find the balance with the feeding, the distance gets a little further and the pigeons return in smaller numbers, at the close of night there was once again a high percentage rate of 99.69 and 2597 pigeons home, with a further nine coming in the following morning just eight pigeons remain unaccounted for at present. A happy Arona Team after race 1 and 2 A happy Arona Team after race 1 and 2 So we now have a weekend break and prepare for training race three planned for Tuesday 8th Dec when there will be a slight increase in distance, however time is also closing in now as we approach the owners activation period, which commences after training race 5 on December 14th after which unpaid for pigeons are open for third party activation, so it’s time to consider your options in preparation for this good luck for the remaining three races in phase one of the 2016 Arona derby one loft race, after the break for the Xmas and new year period, we recommence in the new year when the training gets more intense as the distances increase. 6. October 31st and the doors close for yet another year for entry into the arona derby tenerife one loft race ,with an estimated prize fund of 250,000 euro and three new cars on offer for the eventual winners of the hotspot races and final event. Its through hard work of the many co ordinators from around the world the loft at present contains approx 2,700 pigeons and with the final shipments due to arrive before the cut off date the figure will climb to over the 3,000 for this year race ,a record number for the race in its past eleven year existence. With over 30 countries now competing and with the publicised success of the 2015 race when 196 birds were recorded from the entry of 209 pigeons entered ,the arona tenerife race has attracted a large number of new entries this year ,with many highly profiled fanciers and breeding studs , preparing themselves to test their pigeons against some of the best competition and rugged terrain and sea crossings that this race offers, which entitles itself to claim itself as the the hardest one loft race in the world. 12193720_189661941373350_8114045803673094391_n So what makes the arona olr different from an other race around the world, firstly not only is the race performed over both land and sea which itself offers the ultimate challenge for both pigeons and fanciers to overcome, but be it one of the larger established breeding studs or a small back garden loft at the arona all pigeons treated as equal and treated the same. The derby arona one loft race also offers a personal and professional set up in the form of country wide co ordinators from all corners and continents of the world ,who take the time and care of your pigeons within the transition period from your loft to the lofts in tenerife. Once at the loft the arona team adopt a total transparent policy, as they go about their daily routines ,they not only offer day by day information to participants as too whats happening in and around the loft with the pigeons via the website facilities on training / race days they also provide, as it happened information via livestream during each event. Each entrant will also receive information as to basketing and arrivals via mms tex services facilities additionally race results are displayed for all to see on the internet, not hours later but as the pigeons arrive and updated accordingly. But above all jose ,gladys and ledesma family, take time out to offer a warm welcome to anyone that wish to go along to the loft and view the lofts and pigeons housed (subject to prior arrangement) during there stay on the island of tenerife To give a little insight into the next stages, throughout november whilst it all may seem quieter than usual on the arona website, at the loft there is a lot of activity as the administration team gather all the relevant information on the pigeons present and assign ets rings and photograph each pigeon individually ,which based on the numbers entered is a large task and time consuming operation to undertake,On completion all the information gathered it is then added to the website in fancier/syndicate and country form for viewing, for most who entered earlier in the year this will be the first time that they can visualy see how their entries have matured over the past months, also all new participants should of recieved their unique personal login and password details so that their accounts and relevant information on their pigeons can be accessed, this will become more useful as the racing goes on and the opportunity of pools and nominations come into effect as for the pigeons themselves ,its through the month on november and with no more additions entering the loft, the inmates undergo a series of preventative treatments for the relevant illnesses, such as canker cocci etc to ensure that all are in the best possible condition in preparation for the training and racing programme ahead of them. 12192005_189662131373331_7380731884217564053_n December and training begins , as always this commences from short distances at first of just a few kilometres to encourage the pigeons to orientate upon liberation and discover the line of flight home ,this increases on a regular bases as the training progresses. During early december ,between 14th and 2oth dec and after the overcoming the settling in period and with the first five or six training tosses behind them, its NOW time for you the fancier to activate your pigeons which are present ,this is done on the following basis ,the first pigeon is paid through your initial entry fee, and all remaining entries will cost an additional 220 euro per pigeon this obviously we encourage you to do as early as possible to ensure your entries remain within your team ,as this is the only time that you the entrant will have the exclusive opportunity of paying and competing with your own pigeons in future races , failure to do so will result in all unpaid pigeons entering the third party activation period .. remember third party activated pigeon have gone on to win major prizes in past years so your loss could be someone else`s gain. Third party activation from december 22nd and through out the xmas and new year period pigeons which were not paid for and activated by the entrant for whatever reason and without exception , now go up for third party activation ,this gives fanciers and interested parties the opportunity of entering the race by purchasing unpaid pigeons for the same price of 220 euro ,and therefore give them the sole rights to any prize monies won by any relevant pigeon. January and its onwards and northwards as the training becomes more regular with the pigeons being trained further north towards the port of santa cruz before heading out to sea and across the atlantic ocean to gran canaria and fuerteventura ,more on these in future reports as we progress towards the ultimate final race in march when we welcome everyone to enjoy the atmosphere and friendship at the loft throughout the day. So once again on behalf of the arona team, thank you to the coordinators and the many participants old and new for your interest and participation as we wish everyone competing in THE ARONA DERBY ONE LOFT RACE IN 2016 great success and enjoyment during the 2016 series and look forward to reporting on the leading pigeons once again throughout the campaign. Important dates for your diary: October 31st doors close for entry December 2nd 1st training (subject to weather ) December 14th-20th owners activation December 22nd third party activation starts March 14th-18th final race week (subject to weather) Tom Harris

  9. The Joe Murphy Column For my first column of the New Year it registered that this will be my 40th year as a scribe for the BHW and I have covered some ‘Great’ fanciers during this time. I started away back in 1976 as our area Kennoway, Leven and Methilhaven was not obtaining any publicity within the Fife Federation. Within these 3 clubs we had some outstanding fanciers sadly many of them have now passed on however there are still some fanciers from this time continuing to race their pigeons to this day and I wish them ALL the very best for the 2016 season. While thinking about the above it also struck me that I must now be one of the oldest Scottish scribes within the pigeon press. When I started in my late 20’s we had Observer, Jim Renwick, CSO Howie, Jim George (Round O) Bobby Kennedy, John Swinburne to name a few, plus there were many others writing at that time. I remember Jim Renwick telling me to use my own name on my column and not a fictitious one as people who need to contact me regarding any aspect of the sport would do so especially when they knew they were speaking to that real person. I have been asked by Ian McKay of Pigeon Basic’s to add my column to the site and I will give this a ‘trial period’ and see how it goes. Cumbria Auction Received a phone call from Stephen Allen who along with Steve Glencross organised a sale of this year’s youngsters to help the local community of Cumbria and surrounding district. As many of you will have seen many of these people never even spent Christmas in their own homes due to the floods and our hearts go out to them (and the people of York). The sale of 41 lots brought in £2705 and the lads would like to thank all the buyers and the fanciers who donated birds to this sale. My own contribution was purchased by Mr Coull and I will contact him once it is ready and wish him well with it and hope it does him some good. Christmas Lunch News from John Tyerman who wrote ‘Hi Joe, good to see Richard and Jamie Combe getting the SHU award, and in such close competition with their friend and neighbour John Bosworth, well done and congratulations to them all. I am also sending you some photos of our recent Annual Christmas lunch which we had at the Stables Bar at Fontwell racecourse. Tis is always a very enjoyable day spent in good company and plenty pigeon banter - this one lasted 5 hours so a fair bit of liquid refreshment too! The pictures are as follows left to right: (1) Fred Hall, previous NFC Pau and Classic winner, (2) Clive Turner - again a Classic winner and top flyer. (3) Is Dave Farr who has many top prizes in distance events in BBC and NFC. (4) is yours truly JT - won a ticket or two in my time, (5) is Ian Crammond of the Crammond and Langstaff partnership who have won many top prizes including 2 NFC Nationals. (6) Dave Bridger who won LSECC Classic on the same night I won CSCFC Tarbes from the joint liberation. (7) Gordon Marsh another top flyer and previous Classic winner.(8) Alasdair Muir - winner of 3 previous Classics and fellow Scot as you know. The next photo is of Ian, Dave Bridger, Gordon Marsh, Al Muir, Fred Hall, Clive Turner, Dave Farr and John Tyerman. I’m still attending the hospital and my treatment seems to be working as my recent blood tests have shown the para-protein (cancer) levels are reducing, so early days but good news none the less. Thanks for all your good wishes and wishing you, Margaret and all the family a very happy Christmas and Guid New Year kindest regards John. Setback I have been enquiring about my dear friend Tom McEwen of Elphinstone after his major heart surgery and have been informed he has now contacted a lung infection. Like everyone who has been mobile all their lives Tom is finding it hard not to be able to do things and is very grateful to his wife Marlene and son Scott who are looking after the birds and walking his dog. Tom will have to take it easy for the foreseeable future and we all wish him well and ‘Time’ is a great healer. Special Message Received the following mail from Billy Holland from Kirkintilloch who wrote ‘Hi Joe and Margaret, I hope all is well with you both I was hoping to catch up with you at the SHU show at the weekend to have a blether about the article you did on lemons back in September / October 2013. As you know I was diagnosed with a tumour in my liver and the doctors did not know if it was cancers or not, and I could not get a biopsy without an operation. If this resulted in an operation and the tumour was cancerous then they would take away 2 thirds of my liver out, Looking back at this time I think I had about given up on life, anyway I decided not to have the operation at the meeting with the consultant 4 days later. On the road home from the hospital I decided ‘No more pain killers for me’ (I was taking about 12 pills a day). The next month was not good but ‘here I am’. Then my son pick up a pile of pigeon paper from the shop and your article was in one of these about ‘Lemmon’s’ so I thought to myself ‘What was there to loose’. So I started eating the lemons (skin and all as you suggested) it took me about 6 weeks before I could eat a whole lemon then as time went on I could not taste them so started eating 2 whole lemons a day and started putting Milk Thistle powder on them as well. With all this going into my body my weight dropped and waist line shrunk and I have now lost 6 and a ½ stone but the great thing Joe is I feel amazing. However the most important factor and the reason to writing to you is My Tumour Has Disappeared. I received the ALL CLEAR from the doctors and to say I’m ecstatic would be understatement. You said in your article ‘That if this information helps one person you would be happy’. Well Joe I cannot thank you enough and the doctors have said I’ve to continue with what I've been doing, so a Big Thanks Joe yours Billy Holland. What BRILLIANT news from Billy and we are so happy to hear from him and to be honest I could not read the last of his note for tears of happiness for Billy and wish him all the best for 2016. SHU Show Result Received a note from Linda Brooks who wrote ‘Hi Joe, please find attached result (pending flown Certificates), and a copy of trophy winners and raffle winners and will email you some photos of the day when I have time. Thanks once again for your support yours Linda. The overall Best in Show was won by the husband and wife partnership of John & Alice Bell who made a clean sweep in one or two classes taking the first three places. John and Alice consistently produce immaculate birds for the show pen and are well deserved winners of this year’s Best in Show. The weather was cold but dry on the day and all the entrants arrived just after 08.00am to begin penning the birds. Our Show Manager, Gordon Turnbull, makes sure everything runs smoothly and oversees all that happens in the actual show bird arena. Gordon checks that everyone knows exactly what they should be doing and is on hand throughout the day to take care of any unforeseen problems. We rely so much on the goodwill of the volunteers who turn up to give a hand and anyone interested in helping out on the day is welcome to contact me at the SHU office. Our Judges arrive around 09.00am and have tea and coffee and time to meet each other and be given their classes prior to judging beginning just after 10.00. Our SHU Past Presidents, Sam McFadzean, Jim McGhee and John Barlow do a great job welcoming and entertaining our judges and SHU Trophy Winners over lunch when judging is over, and by 14.00 we are ready to begin presenting the SHU Trophies. These trophies are extremely difficult to win and I’m encouraged that each year the number of claims is rising. These are judged early in November each year by a small committee comprising Dr Phil Lynch, Robert Cormack and George Pollock and usually the current SHU President. This is another small group of people that give up their time to help. Judging of Best in Show takes place around 15.00 and is closely watched by all the entrants. Ian Noble, SHU President announces the winners of Best Old Bird and Young Bird Racing and Best Old Bird and Best Young Bird Showing and the overall Best in Show in the actual Show Arena before the presentation of the Best in Show Trophy on the main stage. The drawing of the raffles and lucky programmes is always a highlight of the day and we have to give a massive thanks to all of our SHU Club Secretaries who sell our tickets, it is a big part of our show income and essential to help us go forward for future shows. Thanks also to everyone who provided raffle prizes and sponsorship and to everyone that bought tickets. Grand Raffle Cash Prize winners are as follows:- £200 John Bird: £100 G Whitson: £50 James Russell: £25 Bev Whittaker: £25 J Jack; £25 Clyde Coast HS, Ardrossan: £25 Pat Ward, Linlithgow: £25 Keith Cochrane: £25 Billy Bilsland: £25 M Fraser. Other prizes of whisky, wine, pigeon products etc. were won by Billy Bilsland, Kevin Winter, Bill Frew, & Iris Higgins. Pigeon Raffle - Thank you to T Turpie; Brian Kinnear and J Scott for donating the best of their pigeons; they were won respectively by:- John Hadfield, Gordon Campbell and Jim Lumsden. The stands reported brisk trading on the day and although we are restricted to the numbers of stands we can accommodate, we like to think we have a good balance of pigeon products and enough visitors to ensure the stands find it worthwhile coming along. I hope everyone enjoyed the show and the facilities and, on behalf of the Show Committee I would like to thank you all for coming along and supporting us and to assure you of a warm welcome again in 2016. On his way out the door with the loot, one brave customer grabs the hood and pulls it off, revealing the robber's face. The robber shoots the guy dead without hesitation! He then looks around the bank to see if anyone else has seen him. He sees one of the tellers looking straight at him. The robber walks over and calmly shoots him dead. Everyone by now is very scared and looking down at the floor. "Dida anyone elsa seea my face?" calls the robber. Then follows a tense minute of silence and then elderly Italian gentleman, tentatively raises his hand and says, "I thinka my wife caught a glimpse."
