  2. “INTERNATIONAL PRESS RELEASE†THE 20th SOUTH AFRICAN MILLION DOLLAR “PLATINUM EDITION†(THE RACE WITH THE PROVEN TRACK RECORD) (THE GREATEST PIGEON RACE IN THE WORLD) DUE TO BE HELD IN LINBRO PARK, SANDTON, JOHANNESBURG, SOUTH AFRICA ON SATURDAY 6th FEBRUARY 2016. ANOTHER RACE SEASON STARTS IN THE SOUTH AFRICAN SUNSHINE. THE FANTASTIC MONTECASINO COMPLEX, FOURWAYS, JOHANNESBURG, SOUTH AFRICA WILL BE HOSTING THE 20th SOUTH AFRICAN MILLION DOLLAR PIGEON RACE. RESULTS FOR TRAINING RACE 13 & HOT SPOT CAR RACE 5. We are now getting very close to to Final Race, which takes place on Saturday 6th February 2016 and the pigeons that are still left in the two race lofts a Linbro Park are now after scores of Training Tosses, numerous Training Races and five Hot Spot Car Races really getting used to the regular training programme and now have a great racing line back to the lofts. They are also now coping very well with the extremely hot and humid weather conditions this year, plus of course the regular South Africa thunderstorms. These are the rest of the races remaining in the 2015/16 race series:- Training Race 15 from 80km (50 miles) on Saturday 30th January, then THE FINAL RACE from 550km (342 miles) on Saturday 6th February 2016. The dates are not be set in stone and if the proposed date for any of these races is not suitable for liberation, then these will take place on the next best day in that week. Daily training will also take place during the week providing the weather is suitable. No training will take place on Sundays unless of course a holdover takes place on the Saturday race. The Overall Averages and the allocated Prize Money will only count in races of 50km (31 miles) and over. All the United Kingdom Team fanciers/entrants and syndicate shareholders will be kept up to date with weekly “NEWSLETTERS†plus any of them or in fact anybody can log on to the state of the art The South African Million Dollar Race web site:- www.samdpr.com and get all the information they might require during the 2015/16 race programme. LIVESTREAM was once again available for TRAINING RACE 13 so I duly logged on at 06.15 (GMT) or 08.15 South African time and noticed after overnight and early morning rain there a cloudy sky and a not much breeze at the race lofts. The liberation was delayed until the rain belt cleared away, hence the later liberation. I thought the winning pigeons would take about one hour. I did not have to wait very long before the first gang of about 150 pigeons duly arrived at 08.48 bang on line and did a lap of honour before landing on the traps and loft 2, immediately they landed the tape recording was put on and these started to trap, within a few seconds of the arrival of the first gang another big gang of about 200 arrived, followed by two more gangs of aver 100 pigeons. All these pitched on the traps and race lofts and started to trap. Within a few minutes literally hundreds of pigeons were officially recorded by the Deister Electronic Clocking System. Once again some of the early pigeons did not trap very well because the journey did not take much out of them. The tougher the race and the further the distance the pigeons always seem to trap quicker. TRAINING RACE 13 took take place on Wednesday 20th January from 76km (47 miles). The convoy were liberated at 07.50 in fine, overcast and cool conditions, with little to no wind at liberation but slightly assisting them on route and with a temperature at liberation of 17c (62f) and a reasonable race was anticipated. The temperature was expected to rise to a 30c (88f) during the afternoon but rain was also expected around 11 am and the heavy rain from about 16.00. Of course the majority of the pigeons liberated would be home and tucked up in the race lofts by the time the rain arrived. Well, Saturday 23rd January 2016 was going to be the toughest test the pigeons have encountered so far and of course those that complete this race will then have a great chance to compete in the FINAL RACE on Saturday 2nd February 2016 from Douglas a distance of 550km (342 miles), when somebody, somewhere will become a World Champion overnight. The pigeons were basketed on Friday and driven to the race point but unfortunately the weather on Saturday morning was not good so after a few hours of steady rain and a not better weather report for the Sunday it was decided by the Race Committee to bring the pigeon back to the lofts in Linbro Park. The weather for Monday 25th January 2016 looked excellent and the pigeons were once again basketed on Sunday and returned to the race point for their toughest task so far. This once again shows fanciers around the world that the SAMDPR think of your pigeon first. LIVESTREAM was once again available for HOT SPOT CAR RACE 5 but just after I logged on at 07.05 (GMT) or 09.05 South African time. The transmission showed a lovely morning in Linbro Park, clear blue sky and a few fluffy clouds and a light breeze. I thought about three and a half hours for the 341km (212 mile) journey. Earlier than expected at 09.14 about 40 pigeons were seen approaching the lofts, they swung round and hit the lofts and as they did another small group of about 15 pigeons, then a single pigeon arrived followed by 5 more and then a short gap small gang of about 20 pigeons bang on line, they flew round the lofts and hit the trapping area, they did not hang around to trap and as they did another gang of about 25 pigeons landed followed by another gang of around 50 arrived bang on line, flew round the lofts and landed and they started to move towards the traps. These were followed by more small gangs bang on line and they hit the top of the lofts. The trapping this morning was excellent and those that went in first won the major spoils. Within a few minutes there were hundreds of pigeons waiting to be clocked by the Deister Electronic Clocking System. HOT SPOT CAR RACE 5 was finally held on Monday 25th January 2016 from 341km (212 miles) and this would be their toughest test so far and the convoy were liberated at 06.00 with a light tail wind at liberation and a temperature of 18c (64f) at liberation an a fairly fast race was anticipated. The weather forecast was for a good day rising to 30c (88f) as the day progressed with late afternoon rain and thunderstorms from about 14.00 onwards. Hopefully, most of the pigeons would be tucked up in the lofts by then. If there are no details besides your winning pigeon/s then please contact me on 01279-812005 or reglofts@aol.com with your details and I will include these in my later International Press Reports. I personally do my best to give all the fanciers, entrants and breeders all the credit they and their pigeons deserve when they manage to get in the race results so your help in this matter will be greatly appreciated. As mentioned earlier only races of 50km (approx. 31 miles) will count towards The 20th South African Million Dollar Overall ACE PIGEON Averages, which has a total of three superb cash prizes of US$10,000 (approx. £6,666), US$5,000 (approx. £3,333) and US$2,500 (approx. £1,666) for 1st, 2nd and 3rd in this category after the Final Race has been completed. NOMINATION RACES will be held on numerous TRAINING RACES, started on TRAINING RACE 2 plus the HOT SPOT CAR RACES 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 and of course the FINAL RACE. See SAMDPR Web Site for full details. All these races will have US$1, US$2, US£5, US$10, US$20, US$50 & US$100 REGIONAL and US$1, US$2, US$5, US$10, US$20, US$50 & US$100 GLOBAL NOMINATIONS which can be placed on THE SOUTH AFRICAN MILLION DOLLAR Web Site. For HOT SPOT CAR RACES there will also be an optional US$200 Nomination. If you wish to enter any of these NOMINATIONS, you will have to have credit in your ASI Master Account. If you do not have credit then please forward funds to your Race Shipper so that this can be transferred to your Master Account in time to get your NOMINATIONS placed. Please do not leave it to the last minute to transfer funds as the transfer may not go through in time and this could result in your pigeon or pigeons not winning what they should be rewarded with. GOOD LUCK TO ALL CONCERNED AND REGULAR “INTERNATIONAL PRESS RELEASESâ€, “NEWSLETTERS†AND “UPDATES†WILL BE SENT OUT TO ALL COMPETITORS/ENTRANTS AND SYNDICATE SHAREHOLDERS ON A WEEKLY BASIS BY EMAIL OVER THE NEXT FEW MONTHS. ALSO WEEKLY “PRESS RELEASES†WILL BE SENT OUT TO BOTH OUR TWO PIGEON PUBLICATIONS NAMELY THE “BRITISH HOMING WORLD†AND “â€THE RACING PIGEON†PLUS IT WILL ALSO BE ON MY REGENCY LOFTS WEB SITE www.regencylofts.com FOR ALL TO VIEW. ***SPECIAL NOTICE*** One point that should be pointed out to all competitors and entrants is that only your NUMBER 1 pigeons is “ACTIVATED†(FULLY PAID UP ENTRY) with the other TWO (2) pigeons in each of your “TEAM OF 3†being your RESERVES or BACK-UP PIGEONS. Another point worth mentioning is if you happened to lose your NUMBER 1 PIGEON, your NUMBER 2 PIGEON would replace it FREE OF CHARGE and likewise if you then lost your NUMBER 2 PIGEON, your NUMBER 3 PIGEON would then replace that one FREE OF CHARGE. If you were unlucky enough to lose all your entries of 3 pigeons in any of your “TEAMS†and they had won no “Special Prize Money†in the new HOT SPOT CAR RACES 1, 2, 3, 4 & 5 then you are entitled to a FREE ENTRY into the 21st SAMDPR and all you have to pay is the official shipping/export costs to your Country Shipper. This of course represents great value for your money. All pigeons go to every training toss and Saturday and Wednesday races providing they are fit enough but can only compete for any of the allocated PRIZE MONEY or SPECIAL AWARDS in the 5 x HOT SPOT CAR RACES if they are “ACTIVATED†and that means that these must be paid for prior to the HOT SPOT CAR RACE 1, which actually took place on SATURDAY 12th DECEMBER 2015 from 130km (approx. 81 miles). The cost to “ACTIVATE†these “RESERVES or BACK-UP PIGEONS†is US$1,100 (approx. £750) (THIS MAY CHANGE SLIGHTLY DEPENDING ON CURRENCY EXCHANGE RATE AT THE TIME OF ACTIVATION) but that will then entitle all these fully paid up pigeons to compete and be eligible to fly for all the extra cash prizes and special awards that amounts to close to US$300,000 (approx. £200,000). The one thing to remember is that once your reserve pigeon or pigeons are fully paid for, if then they get lost and have won no prize money or special awards in the Special Money Races, then you get this money refunded (less about US$15 (£10) for bank charges) or you can have it added to your ASI account, which can then be used to purchase another pigeon at a later date and be entered into the Final Race under your name or syndicate or even under another name of your choice. So as you can see it is “BETTER TO BE SAFE THAN SORRY†and pay for them early, after all you have nothing to lose. The race entry fee for The 19th SAMDPR was actually increased by US$100, up to US$1,100. However, all cash refunds will be at US$1,000 per paid pigeon, which will give the race organiser US$100 per pigeon towards the feeding, training and quarantine costs. This new competition was very well supported in its first year and had over 160 entries and was so successful that it also paid out a staggering 2nd prize of US$54,000 cash. Do not miss this fantastic opportunity to win a fabulous new car. The 19th SAMDPR attracted about 140 entries and two staggering prizes were once again won by two worthy winners. (Subject to terms and conditions of entry). The actual cash prizes stated above represent exchange rates at the current time and may of course change at the time of each race depending what the currency exchange rate is on the actual race day. It is worth mentioning that six brand new cars have been won by fanciers representing the United Kingdom Team in the last seven years, Richard Elliott and Chris Gordon both won new cars during the 2005/6 race series and Paul & Dave McCarthy won one a new car during the 2006/7 series. During the 2011/12 race series fanciers from the UK won a staggering 3 x brand new cars and these were Nev & Angi Evans & Steve Cuthbert, Robert & Peter Montila and then Phil Bond. This in itself was an outstanding team performance. No other country has ever won three cars on the trot. The Irish fancier named John Nash also won a brand new car in the 2008/9 race series. I am hopeful that somebody from the United Kingdom or Ireland will also win one or maybe more brand new cars during the 2015/16 race series. GOOD LUCK TO ALL COMPETITORS. I would also just like to notify fanciers that my weekly “INTERNATIONAL PRESS RELEASEâ€, “NEWSLETTERS†and “UPDATES†can now also be seen on the following pigeon web sites:- www.regencylofts.com www.iprr.co.uk www.elimarpigeons.com www.pigeonportal.com www.pigeonglobe.co.uk www.cyberpigeon.co.uk www.pigeonbasics.com www.star-pigeons.com www.pigeonpixels.co.uk www.theloftreport.com www.oneloftracing.com www.hitchcock-pigeons.com plus of course they will also be published in the “â€BRITISH HOMING WORLD†and “THE RACING PIGEON†weeklies and other world pigeon publications for all to see, read and enjoy. Of course these two dates will be confirmed nearer the time. I strongly recommend that you try to ship your race entries on the 1st shipping date as this then gives these pigeons much more time to settle into the race lofts. If you have any questions about any aspect of THE SOUTH AFRICAN MILLION DOLLAR PIGEON RACE, then please contact me as soon as possible on 01279-812005 or my mobile 07860-568216 or by SMS or email at reglofts@aol.com and I will do my best to answer any of your questions or queries about this great race. These “INTERNATIONAL PRESS RELEASES†do take a lot of my time to prepare and I try to get as much into them as possible as I know fanciers and entrants like to know what is happening, unfortunately some time, some information will not be to hand when the print deadline is reached so can’t be included in that report. I can only apologise if I leave something out but I can assure everybody that I do my best to get as much information as possible to put into each of these international reports. IF ANY PIGEON FANCIER IN THE UNITED KINGDOM OR IN FACT ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD WOULD LIKE TO RECEIVE MY WEEKLY “INTERNATIONAL PRESS RELEASESâ€, “NEWSLETTERS†AND “UPDATES†BY EMAIL, THEN ALL THEY HAVE TO DO IS EMAIL ME THEIR ACTUAL EMAIL ADDRESS I WILL PUT THEM ON MY EMAIL DATABASE AND I WILL THEN FORWARD THEM ALL THE INFORMATION BY EMAIL ON A REGULAR BASIS. 8. McCormack & Hughes Viewpark is a small urban development north-east of Uddingston (North Lanarkshire, Scotland). Viewpark is adjacent to Tannochside, and is 2 kilometres (1.2 miles) west of Bellshill. It is often considered a district of Uddingston and was home of one of Scotland's most famous players, Jimmy 'Jinky' Johnstone who lived near the old St.Columbas Primary School on Old Edinburgh Road, which has since been knocked down to make way for private housing. Uddingston is home to Tunnock's factory, famed for its caramel wafers and tea cakes. The factory contributes much to the village's economy, and has sponsored the club and federation for many a year for which the members are very grateful. In earlier times, mining was a major industry, with the village of Flemington an example of a settlement that failed to survive following the closure of its pit in the 1930s. Uddingston & Dist club is very much in the hub of Lanarkshire federation with a number of founder members of this great federation which was formed in 1904. A club that has a very strong membership and takes some winning on a weekly basis. Its members are always up there competing for top federation honours. Mick McCormick was born in Viewpark and played football with the legend that was Jimmy Johnstone, both going to Primary and Secondary school together. Mick was a decent player, as was his brother but they didn't follow the football path of Jimmy. Mick is a very well respected fancier, one with the ability to win from the first to the last race of the federation programme. Ask anyone in the federation about his results and they will say top class Martin Hughes of Knightwood, Glasgow is also a fancier of distinction in this area. 2014 brought about the formation of the partnership McCormick & Hughes, Martin wishing to test his pigeons in the Lanarkshire Federation. Martin is a very busy young man running his own business, trying to balance his career with his beloved hobby. This partnership helps him compete at the top level with Mick looking after the pigeons on a daily basis. It was always my intention to visit one of Lanarkshires top lofts. 1st &,2nd Open, Federation Upper Hayford (292 miles),5th ,8th 9th Sect, 3 in the top 20 of the Bedhampton Open 360 miles. 2nd Sect, 13th Open Ypres 448 miles. 20 section prizes in the very strong centre section of the Lanarkshire Federation for 2014 season, great flying. 18 trophies including Old Bird and Combine Averages within the club. What more can one say. Like I have said in the past these fanciers that compete every week are held at the highest regard, racing from 80 to 500 miles. This is very much a back garden set up a short distance from the club premises. My first thought when entering the loft with Mick was these birds are very contented (They never moved) with Mick being the master of his environment, I pointed this out to Mick and his reply was I wouldn't tolerate anything else. Mick told me he spends a lot of time when the youngsters are in the nest to build up the bond of pigeon and fancier and this will last. The loft was built with Mick in mind, everything to his size to allow him to manage the pigeons as he wishes. After hitting my head on several occasions I soon realised this Not a big set up, possible the smallest I have visited as Mick said with a small team set up you can manage everything in time, you know every individual and they know you. His next boxes are half the traditional size but the birds are content with life. These birds are programmed to compete every week, raced on the traditional roundabout system, which appears so popular these days with fanciers Although Mick stated he will be possible fly total widowhood with cocks in the future, as being 70 years and not in the best of health he needs to keep things simpler to remain competitive. Martin keeps the stock pigeons at Knightwood with the youngsters being transferred to Viewpark for racing .Martin buys the best rom the best and likes testing them at the highest level including one loft racing. I must point out that Martin is a top fancier in his own right with many significant performances flying pigeons. Q. Please introduce yourself and tell us how you got started in the sport? A. Started the pigeons with my father in Douglas, St Viewpark, 55yrs ago .Worked as a steel construction worker that saw him travel around Europe including Holland, Germany, Wales and England, returning to Scotland in 1984 and setting up the loft in 1986 Q. Do you like to have plenty of room for the pigeons? A. Yes I feel I have Q. Winter treatment? A Nothing special, they always get the best of feed and are on open bowl ,cocks and hens out alternative days. This he believes keeps them mentally fit for the raptors. Food for thought he didn't loss one pigeon over non racing season. Q. How do you feed, and what do you feed them on? A. Saturday-Day of race they are fed on return Versele Laga Gerry plus coated with brewers yeast and garlic oil as they wish then taken away . Sunday – Same Monday - V/L Widowhood 50% Gerry Plus 50% morning and night Tuesday - V/L Widowhood Wednesday - As above Thursday - As above Friday - As above last feed 2pm In water on return from race In water Saturday-Aviform 9 in 1 product plus glucose Sunday -Same Monday-Senacol Tuesday to Friday clear water Preventive products -Harkers 3 in 1 tablets every month Aviform Mycoform when required Q. No not interested Q If you Fly Roundabout/Celibate how do you stop your hens pairing to each other A. Roundabout, Hens out Cocks moved into perch section then cocks out and back to boxes. They fly well around loft. Not too bothered about hens pairing sometimes it can be an advantage, why make it complicated. Although if I flew cocks only I would box the hens. Q. Do you think a pigeon has the capabilities of racing both short and long distance races. A. Yes I would say so. Q. Sprinter or distance? A. Federation programme which takes in sprint and up to 460 miles. Q. Young bird preparation A Youngsters are moved into their own section and initially let out with Old birds to give confidence, fed on Breed & Wean with Golden boost and then onto same race preparation as Old Birds Q. What families of pigeons do you keep? A Gerald Delaney Oroory Stud base Jacobs and Grondaleers and also Martins own Busschaerts family Q. Some fanciers go out and purchase good quality winning pigeons but never appear to make the grade A You can’t buy the fancier Q. What product do you feels makes a difference to your birds A. Like the Aviform products and Golden boost when rearing youngsters. Q. Which of the two sexes do you consider is the most important when it comes to breeding? A. Both Q. Is there anything that you have not won in the sport that you would like to achieve? A. Mick laughed, next year I only wish to win half the trophies, then possibly I’ll get more friends. Q. Who do you consider to be the best fanciers in the Country and for what reasons? A. GWP Macaloney by a country mile. Q. What do you think can be done to take the sport forward? A. Would like to see the Lanarkshire having only three big clubs think this would make things very competitive. Also like to see a West Coast Amalgamation. Q. Is a favourable loft location? A. Yes we have little chance of winning a National ,nine out of ten times we are miles behind the guys on the East coast (That’s just the way it is), that’s why I like federation racing, more of a level playing field. Q. Do you use the darkness system for the young birds A. Yes everything, although wouldn't say I like it. Q. Are there any feeding methods for the young birds i.e. do you break them down, do you keep them hungry for control purposes, do you give them a trapping seed mix? A. VL Breed and Wean, with Golden boost, thereafter same as Old birds. Q. What percentage do you consider it takes to win with racing pigeons for Management and pigeons and why? A. A. .30 miles, around four tosses before racing including two in the federation transporter for old birds. Q. Do you think illegal drugs are used to enhance racing performance? A. Not aware of them. Q. Do you attach any real importance to the pigeon’s wing i.e. back wing, end four flights and do you look at the wing to see if they have cast before a race. Any other comments on the wing? A. No don't take any interest Q. What about the throat theory? A. No Q Improvements in Federation A. Loft ventilation, what, why, where and do you change with the season? A. Open loft ventilation, 2 inch roof front and back, small louvres at front and also 18 inch at front. Once shut the front up with perspex and the pigeons stopped performing. Q Do you suffer from Young bird sickness A Yes, no real cure but keep trying new products to combat same. Q. 12. McCormick & Hughes Lanarkshire Federation Champion Loft 2015 (Over 71,000 birds competing) To be the Champion loft in the biggest federation in the British Isles, with birdage of over 71,000 in its race programme takes some winning and to win it racing a small team of pigeons is remarkable. As I have stated in the past these guys are the real McCoy. They race their birds every week in the nineteen week long race programme that starts at 80 miles through to 450 miles. These fanciers don't just, turn up for four weeks a year; they are dedicated to their cause and are there to win every week. “Real pigeon fanciers in my eyes". The partnership receiving their Trophy at the Federation Presentation: The mighty Mick McCormick and young Martin Hughes make a formidable partnership that in their short time in partnership have gone right to the top of their sport. It’s remarkable that they started the old bird season with 27 of which four were late breds that hadn't raced and 29 youngsters. I have already completed a loft report April 2015 of their previous performances and is available on the Lanarkshire website and Elimar pigeon site. When speaking to Mick he is quick to point out the achievements of Martin and how he provided the catalyst, taking his loft performances to the next level. Martin Hughes is a top flyer in his own right and with the partnerships pigeons coming from his highly successful stock pigeons based on. Gerald Delaney Oroory Stud based Jacobs and Grondaleers and also Martin’s Busschaert family based on the very best of Ron Williamson stock. The loft is a back garden set up, everything based around keeping the birds under control and of a good temperament as Mick wouldn't tolerate anything else. The sections are small and compact to meet Mick’s size. Watch your heads lads as I bumped mine a number of times Mick knows what he likes in a pigeon, small to medium in size with good strong pectoral muscle. As I stated he doesn't keep a big team and after finishing the season with 16 youngsters Mick said "I don't know what to do with all these pigeons", having 37 for racing next season. Ask anyone in Lanarkshire how good these guys are. Well done lads, gives everyone hope that you don't have to sent 50 to 70 birds every week to be the best. I feel very proud to undertake these fellow Lanarkshire fanciers Champions report. 15. The Joe Murphy Column Kevin borrowed a ‘Thermal Gun’ to check out some dampness within his house and after using it he had an idea and wished to take a picture of his birds in the loft. He has forwarded these to me and it just shows how much body heat the birds keep in and how their feathers insulated them. You can see a great example of this in picture one with redness on the head of the bird sitting on the bin. You can also see this in the birds sitting on the perch and you can see more of the bird when they are relaxed in the aviary. Makes you wonder if doing this on individual birds prior to a distance race would give you an inclination that the bird was ‘spot on’ so to speak. We are both looking forward to the new season as the birds will now be racing to their new location and hopefully will not go back to the old loft. The yearlings are ‘sticking out’ and I personally am looking forward to seeing how our Daniel Aerens stand up to flying into Scotland. They seem to mature quicker than the other families within the loft but as we all know the basket is the real test and I will keep you informed of their progress. SNFC Race Points I have heard about the changes proposed for the SNFC race programme for the 2016 season, with the first inland race from Billericay (which was a success in 2015) then we have Littlehampton proposed against Portsmouth. Then we have Reims against Alencon and I personally agree with this change as it is on the same line and has a shorter English Channel crossing for the birds than Alencon. Reims is also on the same line as Ypres which the club race from just now and this race point has been an outstanding success since it was introduced in 2008. With winners from the section A (south), section B-(Edinburgh area) Section C-(Fife and Angus) and section G (north section: with the outstanding winner ‘Poppy’ away up in Peterhead in 2014. The proposal for the new race point of Roye also makes sense as it is also on the same line as Reims and as we all know the channel crossing makes all the difference to these long distance races. The SNFC have had 3 good races from Reims and the SNRPC have had excellent racing from this same race point for the past 10 years or so. This is one good thing about the other national they have a fixed race programme and stick to it and the SNFC need to so the same. Whatever happens I just hope there are no more changes on race points as every time we go to a new liberation site we end up having quite a few losses and the way things are going that is the last problems we need. I also see there is a proposal for fanciers to phone in their 1st bird within an hour of timing in, this seems to be causing quite a ‘ripple’ amongst members. With some wishing for a special number and not a premium number but this is picking bones in what the national are trying to implement. At present there is the BHW Lib Line arrival line which everyone uses but as we all know not everyone is phoning in their bird’s arrival. This stems back to the time of the ‘charlatan’ when he used this information to his own needs however if there is a ‘doubt’ about security then this need to be ironed out NOW. Another, displeasure is the majority of fanciers have the ETS system which is a great help to everyone. Especially if there is a crisis within the family for example; you have to take someone to hospital, or attend a funeral. Then there is the time when you may have to go into work and let us be honest some people work a Saturday morning. Then we have the problem if the national has a holdover in some of the longer races and this can go on to a Monday. Which can happen especially to fancier in the North section and these fanciers cannot afford to take time of work to wait and see if they GET a pigeon home. So there has to be a concession in events of races like this. I have always been an advocate for fanciers phoning in after they time a bird in but my reason being it would allow the national to put up a probable result on their web site. However the national would have to change their computer software to be in line with other national organisations. So that when fanciers report their birds these are put into the system in a simple forma i.e. the member’s name, town, time and velocity are put onto a result format that everyone can see. Fanciers should also be able to verify a pigeon ON LINE by putting down their membership number: their name: town: birds ring number and time of clocking. (In the BICC you are giving a unique verification code which you note on your clock/ verification slip as proof that you have verified your bird) This system would be at NO EXTRA COST to the fancier as it can be done on your PC, Tablet or mobile phone while you are standing at the loft. This would do away with someone sitting at the lib line phone taking all the information and then adding it onto the Lib Line update service when it would be the responsibility of the fancier to do this the computer would do the rest. I would also like to see the national introduce a film of the liberation (or the weather conditions if it is a holdover) on the national web site. This can easily done now as we have Face Time and you can make recordings on your mobile or tablet and these can then be sent to the national and pasted onto the website. This would save a lot of the ‘unrest’ that happened at Eastbourne last year when the lib line asked fanciers to phone back at such and such a time and then said an update will take place later in the morning. If they had shown a short video clip of the weather problems at the race point this would have saved a lot of inconveniences to fanciers who could have continued with their daily chores. These are just a few of my own personal ideas on progression within the SNFC whether it takes place is another issue but I can assure readers there are many other fanciers who have the same thoughts as myself on the above matters. Good SNFC Birds As I have covered all the pigeons who won awards at the national presentation in 2015 I intend to try and cover as many good pigeons that have already won in national races and in some instances only require one more diploma to obtain a Silver Award. I start with Scotland’s Bird of the Year 2015 raced by Billy Bilsland of Ayton this chequer cock Welltower Roman rung SU12L 11434 was sent to the SNFC Gold Cup race from Alencon and won 3rd section B 12th open from an entry of 1416 birds. He was then sent back to the last old bird national from Clermont a distance of 487 miles and he won 32nd section B 87th open from an entry of 1547 birds. He has previously won 63rd section B 152nd open Maidstone in 2013 flying 339 miles. He was then entered of the SNFC Gold Cup race from Alencon in 2014 and won 130th open. He now requires one more section prize from over the English Channel to obtain his Silver Award and we wish Billy and Roman all the best in 2016. As a matter of interest Welltower Roman was bred by Billy’s good friend Billy Holland of Kirkintilloch and was named after Billy Bilsland’s grandson. Sire of the Dewar Trophy winner is a full brother to Farmer George winner of 1st International Bordeaux (Agen) 10.622 birds and fastest from 22.029 birds flying 826 kilometres for Catherine and Geoff Cooper of St Just. The dam of Welltower Roman is a direct daughter of Roger Barcelona winner of 1st national 11.802 birds, 2nd Intentional 22.887birds when he was mated to a daughter of Pedro and Beauty 85 for M & D Desbuquois. So fanciers will see he is a very well-bred pigeon and our congratulations go to both Billy’s on their pigeon winning such a prestigious award. Our next pigeon is a chequer cock SU13P 60 raced by ‘Super Ally’ AW Robertson of Edinburgh. This cock won 17th section B 27th open from Ypres flying 429 miles in 2014 he was then sent to Clermont in 2015 and won 15th section B 45th open flying 509 miles. This Janssen cock is earmarked for the National Gold Cup race from Alencon in 2016 and we wish Ally all the best and hope he obtains the section prize to obtain his Silver Award. Staying in the East section we come to the ever consistent Richard and Jamie Combe of Elphinstone who have a chequer pied hen SU13E 651 who has won twice in land and twice from over the channel. Her performances are as follows: in 2014 she was entered for Maidstone and won 93rd section B 130th open flying 357 miles she was then sent to Ypres and won 26th section B 38th open flying 426 miles. Then in 2015 she won 197th open from Billericay but no section prize flying 330 miles and then sent to the Gold Cup race point from Alencon she won 34th section B 106th open flying 533 miles, so like the above birds requires one more section diploma to achieve her goal and we wish the partners all the best. Obituary Received a phone call from Douglas Bald informing me of the passing of 2 Almond Valley members they are as follows; Charlie Bell of Bo’ness; who flew in partnership with his good friend Alex Dunsmore as Dunsmore & Bell joining in Almond Valley Federation. Charlie’s late wife Nettie asked Alex to take Charlie into the partnership before she passed. Charlie was an ex miner and was part of the organisation team who purchased the Bo’ness transporter that is still part of the club today. We send our heartfelt condolences to Alex at this sad time. Peter Keenan of Blackburn: who was a quiet modest man and highly respected by all who knew him. Father Robertson who conducted the service spoke very highly of Peter and to his wife Moira and family we send our commiserations at their sad loss. Joe’s Joke Paddy phones an ambulance because his mate's been hit by a car. Paddy: 'Get an ambulance here quick, he's bleeding from his nose and Ears and I think both his legs are broken.' 21. RESULTS FOR TRAINING RACES 11 & 12. The pigeons in the two race lofts a Linbro Park are now after numerous Training Races and four Hot Spot Car Races really getting used to the regular training programme and now have a great racing line back to the lofts. They are also now coping with the extremely hot and humid weather conditions this year, plus of course the regular South Africa thunderstorms. These are the rest of the races remaining in the 2015/16 race series:- Training Race 13 from 80km (50 miles) on Wednesday 20th January, HOT SPOT CAR RACE 5 from 350km (218 miles) on Saturday 23rd January, Training Race 14 from 40km (25 miles) on Wednesday 27th January, Training Race 15 from 80km (50 miles) on Saturday 30th January, then THE FINAL RACE from 550km (342 miles) on Saturday 6th February 2016. All the United Kingdom Team fanciers/entrants and syndicate shareholders will be kept up to date with weekly “NEWSLETTERS†plus any of them or in fact anybody can log on to the state of the art The South African Million Dollar Race web site:- www.samdpr.com and get all the information they might require over the next few months. LIVESTREAM was once again available for TRAINING RACE 11 so I duly logged on at 05.40 (GMT) or 07.40 SA time and noticed there was a blue sky and not a cloud in the sky and a nice breeze at the race lofts. All in all a perfect race day. I thought the winning pigeons would take between 50/55 minutes to cover the 76km (47 miles). a couple of false alarms with pigeons returning from earlier tosses or races. However, I did not have to wait very long before the first gang of about 80 pigeons duly arrived at 08.22 bang on line and did a lap of honour before landing on the traps and loft 2, immediately they landed the tape recording was put on and these started to trap, within a few seconds of the arrival of the first gang another gang of about 100 plus arrived, followed by two more gangs of over 100 pigeons. All these pitched on the traps and race lofts and started to trap. Within a few minutes literally hundreds of pigeons were officially recorded by the Deister Electronic Clocking System. The pigeons did not trap very well because this short journey did not take much out of them. The tougher the race and the further the distance the pigeons always seem to trap quicker. TRAINING RACE 11 took take place on Wednesday 13th January from 76km (47 miles). The convoy were liberated at 07.30 in overcast and conditions, with little to no wind at liberation but slightly assisting them on route and with a temperature at liberation of 18c (64f) and a fairly fast race was anticipated. The temperature was expected to rise to about 26c (80f) during the afternoon. Light rain was forecast at 11am, 13.00 and 16.00 but of course the majority of the pigeons liberated would be home and tucked up in the race lofts by the time the rain arrived. LIVESTREAM was once again available for TRAINING RACE 12 and as I was away from home as I had been asked to judge at the annual Blackpool National Pigeon Show. I duly awoke in my hotel room on Saturday morning and logged on at 05.30 GMT or 07.30 South African time. The transmission showed a very overcast, cloudy and a very windy morning in Linbro Park with the wind picking up even more whilst I was watching. I thought the winning pigeons would arrive about 08.55 and bang on time a small gang of around 25 pigeons came bang on line and flew around the lofts having difficultly landing in the strong wind and as they flew round they were then joined by another big gang of over 100 plus pigeons. As these hit the lofts and landing board they were joined by literally hundreds of other pigeons. Then the pigeons started to trap and as usual the first ones through the traps won all the major spoils. Within a few minutes literally hundreds had been officially clocked by the Diester Electronic Clocking System. TRAINING RACE 12 was held on Saturday 16th January 2016 from 110km (68 miles) slightly further than the listed race programme of 110km (62 miles) and the convoy were liberated at 07.30 with a light head wind at liberation and a temperature of 18c (64f) at liberation an a fairly steady race was anticipated. The weather forecast was for a good day rising to 32c (92f) as the day progressed with late afternoon rain and thunderstorms from about 17.00 onwards. Also for this “SPECIAL PLATINUM EDITION†to celebrate 20 years of this great race AIR SPORT INTERNATIONALE (THE PRESENTERS) will give 10 PLATINUM MEDALS to the first ten ACTIVATED PIGEONS clocked in THE FINAL RACE. My two proposed shipping dates for THE 21st SAMDPR will take about the middle of MAY 2016 and then the second one should be around the middle of JUNE 2016. Of course these two dates will be confirmed nearer the time. I strongly recommend that you try to ship your race entries on the 1st shipping date as this then gives these pigeons much more time to settle into the race lofts.
