How should I feed a 1 month old Pigeon ?
Wiley replied to RoosterBoy's topic in Novices, Beginners & Young Fanciers
well if the baby is a month old it should be eating and drinking by itself by now!most baby pigeons are weaned about 21 days old,if it isnt drinking by itself yet,dip its head in where your water source for the bird is.also young pigeons should neva be scarce of food specially in early development like this pigeon a ounce of good protein based food will support it readily enough. If the pigeon can get up on the perches then it should be back as it will be able to get away from those attacking it -
it will be hard for you to get spare cocks mate considering most ppl these days race widowhood

If i was to restart,id make sure that the federation that i joined in was sending a good number of birds and had a strong membership. What i would do differently is that firstly i would study the results of the people who do well in my federation, taking into consideration that i want to compete in every race, and get in contact with them and ask to buy some latebreds.possibly around 10-14 maxium, maybe 7 from each fancier. For example in my federation if i was starting id ask davy hunt and micky connolley for some latebreds. With these latebreds id train them through the winter and what is left will, then go on to breed me a couple round of youngsters, then will go back into the basket for training and racing. This way i can build a team around proven good pigeons, aswell as racing them, and the ones that do well will be put to stock but always let out so there would be no prisioners

Anyone know any information about these types of widowhood
-
what ive always done to break pigeons out,is make sure they see alot around the loft, which i would basket them up and look around the area. Then i would try to get them down on a nest of eggs.and when you let them out make sure there hungry, and let them just walk outside the loft you dont want them flying straight out, just let them wonder if you have any nervous pigeons best of not letting them out with the pigeon/s that your breaking out cos they could get them up in the sky before ready to.weve always done this when breaking out pigeons and this year a cock we broke out flew lerwick where in the london north road combine only two were in racing time lol this pigeon was no were two weeks late lol

if i was building my own strain id make sure id build a gene pool meaning that in every generation no mater what if you go back, sire to great great grandsire there is a winner in every box and that way im sure if you can write out a pedigree with winners on every line you wont go far wrong from building your own strain
-
craig they were mainly from trevor benton of cathedral lofts, however the direct son was bought at a private treaty advertised in the rp

a fancier sent me this a few years ago and jus come across it again,he said he paid £4 pounds for it as it said it was an unbeatable method,he took one look at it and left a bad comment as he said its not worth £4,i agree its defaintly aint worth £4 pounds, but there is some interesting points there, however if you are a novice i suppose there is some stuff you can take on board and use.But you cant knock it untill uve tried it,i dont know the fanciers name whos system this is so i couldnt help ya folks, just posting it up incase use are interested THE BATH PIGEONS SHOULD BE BATHED AT LEAST ONCE PER WEEK IN ORDER SO THEY CAN REMAIN IN TOP CONDITION BUT THERES ONLY A FEW THAT NO HOW TO USE THE BATHING OF PIGEONS TO INCREASE FITNESS OR TO MAKE IT WANE. BATHING HAS AN EFFECT ON THE FEATHERING; IT BREAKS UP THE OLD OIL THAT PROTECTS THE BIRDS FROM THE WEATHER. THERE IS NO DOUBT THAT THIS COMES ABOUT BY CHANGING SKIN TEMPRETURE, WHICH SEEMS TO CAUSE A HUMIDIFIEING EFFECT BETWEEN THE FEATHERS. HAVE YOU NOTICED THAT ONCE YOUR PIGEONS HAVE TAKEN A BATH THEY WILL PREEN ITSELF, CAREFULLY EXTRACTING OIL FROM THE OIL GLAND AT THE BASE OF THE TAIL AND APPLYING IT TO OTHER FEATHERS. AT THIS TIME YOU WOULD FIND IT HARDER TO WET A PIGEON AFTER IT HAD TAKEN A BATH THAN A WEEK PREVIOUSLY BECAUSE, OF COURSE, THE OIL ON THE FEATHERS IS VERY FRESH. THIS IS WHY IF YOU HAVE SOME TIMES NOTICED WHEN YOU SEND THE BIRDS TO THE CHANNEL AND THEY INCOUNTER A LOT OF RAIN YOU DON’T SEE THEM AGAIN. BECAUSE THEY CANNOT FLY WHEN THEY ARE SOAKED WITH RAIN THEY KEEP GOING LOWER AND LOWER FROM THE WEIGHT AND EVENTUALLY DROWN. IT’S A SAD, BUT IT’S TRUE JUST BY BATHING THE BIRD YOU CAN ENSURE THAT THE BIRDS PERFORMACE WILL IMPROVE AS THEY WILL BE BASICALLY WATER PROOF AS WELL AS THEY WILL BE MORE BOYANT IN FLIGHT. BUT ITS WHEN TO ADMINISTER THE BATH AND WHEVER IT’S A HOT OR A COLD BATH, EACH BATH IS FOR DIFFERENT TYPES OF RACES. NOW IT’S A FACT THAT BATHING A PIGEON WILL KEEP THE MOULT CONTSTANT. ONCE A BIRD HAS A BATH, WITHIN 24 HOURS ONE WILL EXPERIENCE A DOWN MOULT AMONG FIT PIGEONS. MOST TOP FLIERS ACTUALLY BATHE THEIR YOUNG BIRDS ABOUT TWO OR THREE HOURS BEFORE BASKETING AS THIS WILL OFTEN LEAD TO A FLIGHT DROP AND IN TURN BRING THE YOUNG BIRD INTO FORM. ANOTHER USE FOR A BATH IS THE FORCED BATH OF WIDOWERS ON THERE RETURN FROM RACING. THERE A MANY TOP WIDOWERS THAT USE THIS METHOD, BECAUSE IF ONE GIVES THE WIDOWERS A FORCED BATH ON THEIR RETURN FROM A RACE IT HAS THE EFFECT OF CALMING THE BIRDS DOWN AND IS SO EFFECTIVE THAT MANY TOP FLIERS BELIEVE THEY OWE MUCH OF THEIR SUCCESS TO THIS OPERATION. THE WAY FORCED BATHING IS DONE IS FILL A BUCKET WITH WARM WATER. AFTER THE WIDOWER HAS DESIGNATED TIME WITH THE WIDDOWER HEN AND SHE HAS BEEN REMOVED FROM THE LOFT HOLD THE WIDOWER IN THE NORMAL WAY PLACING HIS BODY IN THE BUCKET OF WARM WATER WITH HIS HEAD COMFORTABLE OUT OF THE WATER FOR ONE MINUTE THEN CAREFULLY PLACE HIM BACK INTO HIS BOX. WHEN YOU ARE SPRINTING WIDOWERS FROM WEEK TO WEEK THIS CALMING EFFECT SEEMS TO ENSURE GRATER FITNESS FOR THE NEXT RACE. THESE WIDOWERS ARE RESTING FAR EASIER THAN UNBATHED ONES WHICH SEEMS TO TAKE AT LEAST TWO MORE DAYS TO SETTLE DOWN AGAIN. THE THIRD USE OF A BATH IS PRE-BATHING WIDOWERS BEFORE THE RACE. THIS METHOD IS ESPECIALLY GOOD FOR LONG DISTANCE RACING AND IS SOMETHING I HAVE ALWAYS CONSIDERED TO BE ONE OF MY GRATIST SECRETS. WHEN A WIDOWER IS GOIN TO BE ENTERED INTO A LONG DISTANCE RACE, HE SHOULD NOT BE RACED OR BATHED THE WEEK BEFORE. MAKING IT AT LEAST TWO WEEKS BETWEEN RACES. THEN AROUND TWO TO THREE HOURS BEFORE BASKETING, NORMALLY AROUND LUNCH TIME, WHEN THE WEATHER IS AT ITS WARMIST, GIVE THE BIRDS A COLD BATH. YOU MUST BE SURE ITS TAP WATER ABOUT 20 C, DON’T GIVE A WARM BATH AS THIS WILL QUITEN THE BIRDS TO MUCH. RACE BOOSTER THIS MIX WILL MAKE UP ENOUGH CORN TO FEED 15 BIRDS. FEED THE BIRDS LIGHTLY UNTIL TWO FULL DAYS BEFORE BASKETING AND THEN MIX UP ENOUGH CORN TO FEED 15 BIRDS AND ADD THE FOLLOWING TO IT: 1 TABLE SPOON OF BREWERS YEAST 1 TABLE SPOON GLOUCOSE THE JUICE OF 1 LEMON ONCE YOU HAVE MIXED ALL THIS ONTO THE CORN LEAVE IT OVER NIGHT INSIDE YOUR WINDOW TO DRY. THIS IS BEST DONE WEDNESDAY DAY TIME IF YOUR BASKETING THEM ON FRIDAY SO IT WILL BE READY FOR THURSDAY. THURSDAY AND FRIDAY YOU CAN GIVE YOUR BIRDS AS MUCH OF THE CORN MIX THEY WILL EAT BUT TAKE OFF WHAT THEY DON’T EAT BY 1 O’CLOCK FRIDAY AFTERNOON. THIS IS BEST USED FOR INLAND RACES, HOWEVER IF YOU WISH TO TRY IT GIVE THE BIRDS AS MUCH AS THEY CAN EAT EVERY DAY AND TWO DAYS BEFORE BASKETING ADMINISTER THE RACE BOOSTER. NEXT IS A FEEDING PROGRAM WHICH YOU CAN TRY AND ADMINISTER THE RACE BOOSTER MIX AS DISCUSSED EARLIER. FEEDING PROGRAM FOR WIDOWHOOD RACING SYSTEM THE FEED CONSISTS OF TO TYPES OF MIX I.E ONE KNOWN AS THE BREAKDOWN MIXTURE, WHICH CONSISTS OF A MIXTURE OF BARLEY, DARI, BUCKWHEAT, WHEAT, SAFFLOWER SEED, LINSEED AND HOMON PELLETS. THE OTHER IS KNOWN AS THE BUILD UP MIXTURE, CONSISTS OF MAIZE, PEAS, TARES, DARI, WHEAT, BUCKWHEAT, RED MILO, LINSEED, HEMPSEED, BARLEY AND HOMON PELLETS. THE ABOVE MIXTURES SHOULD ONLY BE FEED OF THE FINEST QUALITY GRAINS. WEEKLY ROUTINE FEEDING FOR INLAND RACING SATURDAY EVENING 3/4 OZ. BREAKDOWN MIXTURE SUNDAY MORNING 3/5 OZ. “ “ SUNDAY EVENING 7/8 OZ. “ “ MONDAY MORNING 3/8 OZ. “ “ MONDAY EVENING 7/8 OZ. “ “ TUESDAY MORNING 3/8 OZ. “ “ TUESDAY EVENING 7/8 OZ. BUILD - UP MIXTURE WEDNESDAY MORNING 3/8 OZ. “ “ WEDNESDAY EVENING 7/8 OZ. “ “ THURSDAY MORNING 3/8 OZ. “ “ THURSDAY EVENING AS MUCH AS THEY WILL EAT RACE BOOSTER, BUILD UP MIX FRIDAY MORNING 3/8 OZ. BUILD UP MIXTURE & RACEBOOSTER FRIDAY NOON AS MUCH AS THEY WILL EAT, LEAVE FOOD IN FRONT OF THEM UNTIL 5PM (BUILD UP MIXTURE CONTAINING RACE BOOSTER) WELL THAT’S IT NOT BAD FOR £4. THIS HAS TAKEN YEARS FOR US TO PUT TOGETHER, I CAN’T TAKE THE CREDIT FOR IT, NOR CAN MY DAD AS IT WAS MY GRANDFATHER YOU PUT ALL THIS TOGETHER WE JUST STUMBELED OVER IT TWO YEARS AFTER HE DIED. WE HAVE A NICE LOFT SITUATED AT MOW COP AND HAVE RACED HER FOR MANY YEARS SHOULD ANYBODY WISH TO POP UP AND HAVE A LOOK AT OUR LOFTS FEEL FREE TO. WE HAVE TWO LOFTS A STOCK COAT AND A MAIN-RACING COAT WE FLY A TEAM OF ABOUT 16 COCKS ON THE WIDOWHOOD SYSTEM, WHICH WE HAVE FLOWN FOR MANY YEARS. THIS YEAR WE HAVE NOT USED THE RACE BOOSTER BECAUSE WE CONSTANTLY LIKE TO TRY OUT NEW THINGS AND DRUGS ON OUR BIRDS. THIS YEAR WE TRIED CREATINE AND I TEL YOU WHAT WE HAVE NEVER HAD SUCH A CRAP SEASON IN OUR LIVES. JUST GOES TO SHOW USE THIS WINNING SYATEM AND DIN’T TELL ANYONE IN YOUR CLUB A THING IT’S THE BEST WAY. REMEMBER KEEP YOUR LIPS SEALED AND YOUR EARS OPEN, THAT’S A GOOD SAYING. KEEP A LOOK OUT FOR MY GRANDADS 500 MILE CAKE RECIPY I DON’T KNOW THE INGREDIENTS YET BECAUSE MY DAD WILL NOT TELL THEM TO ME AS HE IS THINKING OF NOT SELLING THE RECIPY AS THERE IS A LOT OF INTEREST IN IT. BUT WHEN MY GRANDAD YOUST TO USE IT HE AND MY DAD HAD A HELL OF A RACING SEASON SO MUCH SO THEY HAD THEIR PICTURES TAKEN AND EVERYTHING. BEST OF LOOK FOR THE FUTURE AND I HOPE YOU DO AS WELL AS WE HAVE WITH ARE TECHNIQUES.
