Andy, our combines go to Berwick, Stonehaven, Arbroath & Thurso. These race points were chosen many years ago simply because the pigeons were transported by rail and as the above locations were major fishing ports at the time. They had sizable goods yards to accommodate large liberations and as the train timetables were round the clock enabling night time travel. Bar Thurso these liberation sites sit tight on the east coast and any east in the wind brings in the sea mist which spells trouble, if a strong west wind they're pushed out to sea. Why cant we go to liberation sites a few miles inland? I asked once at a combine meeting and was told the prestige of winning out of Berwick/Stonehaven/Arbroath was the reason why we continued with these racepoints................. seems prestige to some is more important than the welfare of our pigeons! This is just one of the many gripes I have with the way our combines are run.
