  1. I'll be interested in the answer to Samantha's question - if you are not showing or racing your birds do they still need vaccinating? :-/
  2. Are they Logans Snowy? It looks as though I got mine just in time. I'm really enjoying them and, although they have never been handled before, they are much less skittish than my previous birds. They already eat from my hand but, boy do they fight! Hardly the gentle creatures I was expecting! ;D :
  3. Thanks Pigeon Man. I have a link here if anyone else is interested: http://www.pigeonbasics.com/articles/article123.html
  4. Thanks everyone. I've replied via PM. Pecked Hen
  5. Hi Robert, a warm welcome from me too. I am new myself to both the forum and pigeons but am overwhelmed by the generosity of the members here, they are always willing to help and advise whatever stupid questions I ask! :)
  6. What do you kow about them Snowy?
  7. " Hey, Westy, I can see straight through here!" ;D ;D

    Logans?

I am looking for white racing pigeons possibly to start dove release, in the future, if I can train the birds. There is an advertisement in BHW for white Logans. Has anyone heard of these and would they be suitable for this? :-/ :-/ What are your opinions on starting afresh with birds? Would you go for two breeding pairs and build up from those or, buy perhaps 10 young birds, train them next spring and hope that you don't lose too many and have enough left to breed the following year. ?? Any advice much appreciated.
  9. One thing that has increased dramatically, over the last few years, is the use of mobile phones. Not sure whether they affect the birds or not but there are new masts cropping up all over the place. :-/ :-/
  10. Your first two pigeons look lovely Westy. My first two were garden fantails, they live in a dovecote but have to go in the loft now because of the Avian Flu. Now I'm looking for white homing pigeons.
  11. Thanks for all your work here Bruno et al. I have read the whole thread today. Whilst I can't claim to understand it all (waiting for the Ladybird version ) I can see that it's time for all us 'ostriches' to confine our birds now, before it's too late.
  12. Ok, that's where I went wrong. I scratched, obviously not gently enough, all the way to the base trying to make the feather open. Bruno, you were never in the stew - you had said to do it gently! I shall leave well alone for a few days now - give the bird and me time to get over the shock!! :
  13. Here's that photo you asked for Joe90. I had a go at scraping the quill but overdid it !
  14. No Stucky, I don't know what they're talking about either but, maybe it's gone and that's why we can't see it! : ;D ;D
  15. Bruno, I can't personally do it but, all the birds are going back to the guy I got them from tomorroow and I know that he will do the necessary. I am going to start afresh with new, and hopefully healthy birds. It turns out that these birds will not home far. I have been advised not to take them out of site of the loft or I'll loose them! > I am keeping my fantails though ( having got Albert through whatever he had, we are quite attached!) If the bird is not eating or drinking then I have to use a syringe - I'll stop pushing seeds in though.
  16. Will do Rose, thanks.

How much are your white racing pigeons please? I don't need fast ones as long as they are 100% white and breed white. Thanks
  18. Well, it's still with us but I'n not sure if I'm just prolonging the inevitable. It is still not eating or drinking and looks pretty miserable. I emptied it's crop and gave it some live yugurt and soaked some dried dog food as I don't have pellets - just a pigeon mix. I've been syringing warm water every two hours or so and have it on a hot water bottle so it's warm. This morning I'm going to try some soaked small seeds and see if I can get those down it's throat. It's droppings are very liquid - green and white (lovely topic as I eat my breakfast!) The guy I got it from has said that I should give up, it's just a ball of feathers but I can't think like that.....I'll let you know how it gets on. Thanks for asking Jimmy.
  19. Phew! Thanks for that mealybar. They all look like chimney sweep's brushed at the moment! ;D
  20. My fantail is growing new tail feathers. The old ones haven't fallen out yet but, the new feathers are about 3" long and they are sort of encased in the quill with about 1/2" at the top which free. Is this normal? Does the feather eventually open up? :-/ :-/
  21. I seem to be going from one problem to another!! I think that this shows how important it is to get your birds from a reputable dealer. :B Last Friday I got two squeakers and 4 adults. unfortunately they have been randomly selected and are not pairs nor are they the parents of the babies. All went well until today when one of the squeakers is not eating at all. I can feel seed in the crop and it has remained there all day. It's droppings are just liquid with white and just now very dark green. I've given it a syringe of water and olive oil, any other suggestions please? The squeaker is about 24 days old - stiill has yellow fluff poking through feathers.
  22. Just found this - don't really know if it's of any help or not. :-/ http://www.silvio-co.com/pigeons/Parathyroid.htm BTW it's about a hen down.
  23. Thanks guys. I've ordered the drops from Harkers and shall buy the spray tomorrow. The guy I got these from said they were clean, healthy pigeons! :-/ They have been free flying in a farmers barn so, in effect, are wild birds. No wonder I'm struggling to calm them down! :
  24. Thanks Doostalker. I haven't stopped itching since I saw them! ;D ;D
  25. Hi, I got some new birds last week and today i've noticed what i think are lice! Little brown thin lines on the feathers a bit like a wood splinter. Is that what they are and what do I treat them with? Will I need treat my original birds too and the loft? Two of the birds are young squeakers - 24days old, is it safe to traet them too? One last question.........do they go on humans? Eeeek!
