Fifer, Any reason for saying 'any mixture without beans' for fantails? Mine have beans and seem ok on them! :-/ They just get the same treatment as my pigeons. Hi Snapper and welcome to the forum. There are lots of friendly folk here with a wealth of experience and great advice between them. How long have you had your fantails? Have they bred yet? I too have garden fantails in a dovecote but I am fairly new to them so I shall leave it to those who know to advise you.

Will the late bred Logans breed or will they be too young Snowy? :-/

What do you use for the birds to build their nests? I have got clay bowls, I seem to remember reading about pine needles somewhere - has anyone else used these?

I thought that I'd name them by the alphabet so that I would know how old they are. I started with Albert and Agnes (buy now think that Albert may have to be Albertina;D) Then came Betty and Bertie, Carla and Carl but they went back so it all went pear shaped. I now have four white Logans which I can't tell apart so the poor things are nameless! :

Ok, I'll start this one off. Here is my black labrador, Inca. She is very good with the pigeons and will lay on the grass letting them peck aroung her - amazing - seeing as we had encouraged her to chase the crows in the fields, it didn't take long for her to realise pigeons are not 'fair game'.

Has anyone tried this? Where do you buy it? I've seen it mentioned a few times on US sites. :-/

Samantha, the second pigeon looks exactly like my garden fantails, except they are pure white. If they breed ( I'm begining to wonder if I have two hens:) you can have some with pleasure.

Your local library can get any book for you if you know the author and title or the ISBN number. It costs something like £0.50 to order a book and you can keep renewing it until someone else requests it. A good way to look at a book and see if it's worth buying!

Hmm, have often taken hens(poultry) eggs and hatched them a few weeks later in an incubator but understood that they are more viable if NOT kept in the fridge.

Given that a very severe winter is forecast, will people still pair up as early or wait until the worst weather is over? :-/

OK thanks, I HAVE been using far too much - I brushed it in, but also sort of sprinkled it around to dry up the droppings.

Do the birds need extra food in this cold weather? Mine seem very hungry but I don't want to make them fat! Will they only eat what they need or are they greedy? I have been giving one film canister full per bird. I also changed feeding to around noon, as they were not eating at dusk, but I thought they had to have a full crop at bedtime. What do you advise me to do? Thanks.

Does it have to be a special mask to catch the proteins, or will one from B&Q do? The loft white certainly makes me cough, think I've been using too much so haven't used any for several days and there's still plenty blown around when they fly.! :-/

Here ya go then Speight! I give each bird two peanuts per day - not health shop or red skins, just bird peanuts and they seem fine. Maybe I'll have a rethink when I've finished the huge bag I bought.
