  1. Everything in rip off Britain is more expensive than abroad and I don't just mean pigeon related items.
  2. There is no doubt that prevention is the answer rather than a cure. There are products which assist and none of these are antibiotics. It is possible to block a virus. I am also of the impression that Nyfuramycin is a combination of antibiotics. That makes it a very powerful drug. I am not sure what the position is now but I do know that it was, at one time, illegal to sell this in this country.
  3. Postage is £5.40
  4. Last year I used the Bamfords 3 phase system and the birds looked and raced well on it. As it was expensive I intend to look long and hard at alternatives in Blackpool and decide from there. At the moment Best all round with about 50% depurative added. I don't want to reduce them too much with the sub zero temperatures.
  5. sounds good to me. Would all birds be in the same transporter as I feel that, if birds which are held at a race point in different conditions, then we do not experience true racing.
  6. Great stuff well done
  7. yes very close to where you had your birds from this year. Is that the reason you ask?
  8. I think there were some decent performances this year right on the coast. Harvey Pollock Tom Smith and John Campbell if I am not mistaken.
  9. It may take time in these temperatures. Eventually he will get the notion. Perhaps the hen is not encouraging him either.

Sounds good to me. But if I don't ask questions I may never learn
  13. The best advice available is through Scottish Agricultural College at Auchincruive.
  14. I think we don't actually know enough and should always seek medical advice. Like you I had a hen which topped the federation from 500 miles on 2 occasions. Very few of her young ever passed the weaning stage. They all had yellow growths inside the mouth. I assumed canker but took one of them to SAC at Auchincruive. PM examination said the youngster was suffering from "Inclusion Body Hepititis caused by a Herpes Virus". It was felt this was transmitted from a parent. The inference was that the mother (which had never had a days illness in her life) was a carrier.
  15. You will never see a virus under a microscope. I got one in 2 years ago and when I reported it the guy was completely taken aback. He told me his birds were really ill and advised to remove it from the loft immediately. Shortly after that I lost 65 youngsters with PMV.

    Saline Solution

The solution Owen is describing is what is known as a saturated solution. That is water which contains the maximum amount of salt. It is probably stronger than that which you would buy. This gives the solution a high density and forces the parasites to float to the surface.
  20. This is exactly the same as today's professional football teams. Each trying to outdo each other by paying more for players and paying higher wages. The pot of gold is insufficient to finance this so they are in trouble.
  21. We have had Hen Harriers nesting in this area on an RSPB site for a few years now. There is a camera on their nest. They are a bit slower than the well known murderers and as far as I am aware they take their name from their normal prey---hens. I don't think they are a threat to a fit healthy racer.
  22. Sadly missed. One of the good guys
  23. Ulster lofts could probably tell you as I think they are friends but you would be advised to look at the DVD Secrets of Champions 4.
  24. Jimmy once the loft is right you have better returns and can be more selective in what you keep at the end of the year. Once you do that properly you go from strength to strength. Many fanciers spend loads buying good birds then ruin them in an unsuitable loft. But yes good birds are important to.
