swabs sent by post should be in a solution this feeds the samples whilst in transit , as you say some are unscruplous and dont see what the bacteria or infection / ailment responds too , thats where the problem lies , a guy that knows what hes looking for can tell you its ailment but a avian vet can treat it effectively because they test or treat with a medicine which is spectrum specific

i feed 20% maples and 80% wheat up until they lay and hatch then i feed 1/3 maples 2/3 wheat increasing the maples as the ybs get bigger

Gary Spavin , i dint realize he was a vet ? does he cary these test in a controlled enviroment ? and surely swabs would have to be grown on a petridish for respirity and microplasma :-/
