  1. Starting to pair up now , probably will take a few photos next week when there all sorted
  2. Birds are used to living outside and extremely tough they regulate there own heat , as long as they have water before them for most of the day they be fine , a little tip is to put a plastic beaker near your back door if waters frozen in beaker its most likely to be frozen in your loft .Is it too cold to be breeding no it's not just ensure your birds have plenty of nesting materials Biggest problem with frozen water is birds use water to regulate there heat , if they dehydrate they wont keep warm and would perish
  3. you can buy heater pads or just simply water am empty before gets too dark and refill early morning after
  4. it's not so much the widowhood system it's the style of boxes , it allows you to lock hen back feed and water , the cock already owns box and gets used to the hen of your choice which is important in both racing and showing if wishing to breed from your birds and pairing for shape / form , colouring or on winning genes
  5. Merged your topic as I think this answers your question Widowhood style boxes makes pairing much easier , ensure cocks settled before introducing hens , ensure your birds aren't too fat before pairing , take note of which cocks have taken boxes and in which ones there in then place hens in the boxes you want them to be in feed hens in boxes for 3 days , the birds should be billing through the bars then let cock in with hen make sure hen has something to stand on just incase cock is aggressive once your pairs look to be paired put a bowl in straw on floor and let a few pairs out at a time till there going back to there own boxes then slowly you'l be able to let them have free acess to there boxes good luck Ensure you provide plenty of grit and minerals all year round
  6. high winds last night expected to be same fer next 36 hours feels dam cold but the suns out which is nice to see
  7. that could be a P.R stunt so no opposition but I truly hope its not allowed to go a head
  8. I can't see the R.S.P.B issuing any licences to control bops , and any lifting of the protection order would mark open day on bop shooting , but I do think that anyone that is having problems with bops should have the right to protect there birds , so it would sort of be a halfway marker if there in the countryside as nature intended they should be protected any in built up areas should be removed
  9. R.S.P.B will only ever see us as a conveyor belt supplying food for bops , it's a dam shame that we don't change our ways as well to start training / racing when bops are sat nesting , would only mean starting a little later and combining the young bird racing into the old bird programme but change wont come too many fossils in the sport , unfortunately fanciers wont come together for the greater good of the sport , although probably the best pigeons on these shores than on the continent we don't have the structure they have , wouldn't it be great to have one big club divide it up into sections so everyone's happy , more structured racing a lot of combined federations going down the road together saving money or a more fragmented sport as what it's becoming
  10. well done , I think the R.S.P.B red list speaks for itself , The lack of song birds in general in every area is down to bops , bops are at saturation point and more needs doing to addressing natures balance bops have no natural predators . R.S.P.B say farming and cats are to blame , government set aside was created to encourage wildlife , farmers haven't been using the pesticides of the past and the only thing that flourishes is bops . Why is the cuck-coo in decline simply lack of viable nest made by the more common wild birds , which there own numbers show every species in decline other than bops and inland gulls on waste sites . Even now bops are in most towns cities and away from there natural environments this supports the saturation point as there naturally countryside / cliff birds . The truth is where's the dawn chorus birds all over your garden first thing , blue tits wrens chaffinches all disappeared from my garden , wont be too long before future generations wont ever see these birds if natures balance is not re addressed
  11. I didn't realise you were that young Lindsay I wouldn't recommend it as could be too toxic for the birds, Lugols would be my first choice been used for many years
  12. trapping keep them hungry birds should respond to the tin , white dari is great as a trapping seed , how to keep them off roofs tennis ball
  13. If it keeps Canker at bay worth a shot many old hands use the Lugol's iodine along with parishes tonic and another one beginning with 'c' , mixed together as a tonic

  23. supposed to be good if have Young bird sickness i give to young birds to help prevent it Cinnamon has some good antioxidant qualities to it Medicinal value In medicine it acts like other volatile oils and once had a reputation as a cure for colds. It has also been used to treat diarrhea and other problems of the digestive system. Cinnamon is high in antioxidant activity. The essential oil of cinnamon also has antimicrobial properties, which can aid in the preservation of certain foods. Cinnamon has been reported to have remarkable pharmacological effects in the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus and insulin resistance. The plant material used in the study was mostly from Chinese cinnamon. Recent advancement in phytochemistry has shown that it is a cinnamtannin B1 isolated from C. verum which is of therapeutic effect on type 2 diabetes, with the exception of the postmenopausal patients studied on C. Cassia. Cinnamon has traditionally been used to treat toothache and fight bad breath and its regular use is believed to stave off common cold and aid digestion. Pharmacological experiments suggest that the cinnamon-derived dietary factor cinnamic aldehyde (cinnamaldehyde) activates the Nrf2-dependent antioxidant response in human epithelial colon cells and may therefore represent an experimental chemopreventive dietary factor targeting colorectal carcinogenesis. Recent research documents anti-melanoma activity of cinnamic aldehyde observed in cell culture and a mouse model of human melanoma. It is reported that regularly drinking tea made from the bark of Sri Lanka cinnamon could be beneficial to oxidative stress related illness in humans, as the plant part contains significant antioxidant potential
