Not only that Frank, would not most members notice a swollen leg or a marker at the club point it out when they struggle to turn the ring to read the number?

it reduces the fluid content and will reduce the swelling! If you get another one then try it, give an appertex then 24hrs latter you will be able to turn the ring!

Some birds have larger legs than others, dust and dead skin can build up under the ring, dust and particles from shavings are worst until there is preasure on the leg which causes it to swell. You could have given the bird an appertex tablet which would have reduced the swelling then you would have been able to clean out under the ring with either a matchstick or darning needle and saved the need to remove the ring.

This maybe the case but ETS rings can be moved from bird to bird! With no life ring it could be a different bird going to the race each week flown under the same ring number!
