yes, i agree ,this could have be possible ,, but in spending £500 would think i would make sure what i was getting, or at very least gt my £500 back
-
i would recomend buying , or obtaining, yb,s as direct as possible bred from winners at that particuar distance , flying over the same terrain ,,,irrespective of breeds some times late breds are available, later, in the year, quite cheap, and bred direct from thes 500 mile+winners and prize-winners

thank you dear sir ;D ;D ;D

maybe wee tip for novices,,re, stockbirds
jimmy white replied to jimmy white's topic in Novices, Beginners & Young Fanciers
maybe another wee tip for novices, with stock birds not getting out, is putting the earth from a freshly dug molehill into an unused drinker , they love a pick at this and would get some natural minerals,, but would only leave for one day, unless re-newing it ,, as , if left to get droppings on it could well cause health probs -
i see youve no answers jamie,, the only advice i can give you, jamie is look around for batches of birds flying round , near you, see who they belong to, then knock on their door and tell them your starting up pigeons , if their decent fanciers, which most are concrning begginners, they could give you the advice you need ,, good luck
-
sorry graham with due respect , it would take longer than this to tell if they were any good,, you must have raced them as ybs at least to say they were no good ,, and they must have been still their to so-call bin them ,, when many yb,s dont even reach this stage , in my opinion, not the best of advice to a novice,,,,,,,and you most certainly did waste £500, sorry mate but just my opinion
-
yes, this can be successfull if well trained /managed , but the problem being judging the ones to race and the ones to hold back as they are moulting, in my opinion any begginner needs to start stopping a few each week to ensure an ob team the following year,, theres only a few yb races , but a good few ob races over a period of,1, 2 3 4,,5,6, even 7 years old depending on the races you intend trying for
-
yes, when their flying/ranging well is time enough to train them [even when the yb,s are doing this they are in fact training themselves [learning] up to a point

Vaccination againest paratyphoid/salmonella
jimmy white replied to thomasd's topic in Novices, Beginners & Young Fanciers
see paratyphoid threads on" health topic" quite a lot of good reading on paratyphoid there -
i beleive ,,contrary to most that by just touching them gently after a week old , then letting them stand on your hand stroking the hard bone under the eye, with the tip of your finger, youll be amazed how they love this and in fact would sit on your hand forever , then as they get older the more you gently handle them the better , if the parents will feed from your hand in the box, youll find b4 long the wee ones following suit,, but new yb,s to the loft need gentle coaxing by feeding them on the floor with a little seed and maple , just letting it slip through your fingers , but keeping your hand there, it wont be long b4 they will be picking from your hand , onve they are picking from your hand try and lift one by putting your hand under its feet , just a few inches above the floor , then as more do this lift your hand higher, it wont be long b4 they will all fly on to your hands and have confidence in you,, the bit about touching them in the nest and standing them on your hand def works ,,as yb,s reared , say at he back of a board ,never seeing you, will often be nervous birds all their life,, better to learn them young, like most things

what causes a virus?? -
my father swore by this,, nettlesoup he called it,, both for the pigeons and the garden,, the soup was made with the top 6 inches of the stinging nettle , made just like tea,, the rest went into the garden barrel, left till it stunk the place out,, then used in the garden as fertilizer , and by golly he was some gardener, and pigeon fancier
-
i think it does,, but in my opinion shouldnt

well done heather sounds great ,, good luck

this, i beleive is an ecellent post,, which i completely agree with, , maybe my post was a little mis-leading,, i certainly do not mean to say,, do not treat, but i would say treat when and if neccessary, and if so, very sensibly, as i said in my post, my bird was not treated at all yet scored well,, obviously this bird didnt need treating,, but good loft management must go a long way, i,e cleanliness , as you will well know most cocci , worms are picked up in droppings [the eggs or the oocysts] most fanciers can keep their loft spotless , but sometimes this is not quite the point ,its the dryness that will kill these oocysts , whether scraped or a good deep litter , but if droppings are left say , still damp, and for over 24 hours, this would be a haven for them , then off course the less oocysts the birds excrete , the less chance of picking more up, which then becomes a vicious circle,, either to the bad,, or to the good , pigeons will all contain certain levels of these , but only to a point where it is not over the limit, this wont do them any harm , when we treat , we eradicate them all , then i beleive nature will replace them, but falsely, and at an alarming rate [as by treating, we are kicking against nature , then you can be sure that nature will soon kick back], but by the same token we are putting our birds through un-natural work loads i.e racing etc, therefore these levels could well build up due to the [un-avoidable] stress we need to put then through, but birds having an in bred good constitution may well handle this better than birds that dont have this attribute, i think sometimes in posts we cannot explain our thoughts easy [i certainly cant anyway ;D] but as i say treat if need treated , but only if,, an example being last year a fancier friend doing exceptionally well with his birds, by not having treated,, [ so i cant understand how you can mend something that is not broken,], but this fancier then treated for worms , cocci canker b4 the last couple races," to make sure thier ok" , needless to say he failed miserably,, so i think what im trying to say is good loft hygene [also outside the loft , around the loft , the rhones etc] goes a long way,, and as i said at the beggining of my incoherent posting ;D ;D ;D i would say treat when, and if neccessary,,,,,,, and if so, very sensibilly,,,,im sure you would,,, but knew what you were doing,, many fanciers, unfortunately treat willy nilly without having a clue why,, [bet we could chat for ages ;D ;D ;D] b4 i end my prolog ;D ;D ;D, a fancier came to me , said his birds had a respiratory prob , after the usual chat on fresh air and dryness etc told him if it was that bad, treat with tylan, the fancier came up to me about 8 weeks later "that stuff is making my birds look better but their still not scoring, when should i stop giving it to them" true ;D ;D ;D i think maybe thats why i mentioned the word" sensibily" ;D ;D ;D here endith my sermon ;D ;D ;D [but not on the mount ;D]all the very best

Massive outbreak of YB Sickness on the continent
jimmy white replied to PigeonDesigner's topic in Notice Board
agree,, with these birds its the survival of the fittest ,, with racing pigeons it has now become the propped up, brigade,, pruducing birds with less consitution,, breeding birds of the same sort in my opinion
