maybe your right bruno, but whatever it is it must be instinctive behaviour i cant say ive seen my hens that are ready to lay, go down to any cock.but maybe so,but to see them driving in the air with the cock allmost touching the hen, ive seen them fly like that for an hour, so i reckon it would have to take some weight off them, but again, an interesting subject

i had a youngster off two nestmates that topped the fed, this was done accidently me and some of my mates bought birds from te humberside stud, i had done well with mine and my mate had done well with his, so we decided to pair them, and split the young, after the bird had topped the fed i asked him for he pedigree, and was very surprized to find out they were nest mates, [mind you i think thats a bit close, but there you are] as ive said before theres nowt so queer as pigeons

looking back now i was completely fatigued and had no appetite anyway, i wondered why they gave me it in the first place, i had septic arthritis, i felt that rotten i didnt even ask

just a shot in the dark pecked hen ,see if you can get a close look at it, to see if it has happened to get a bit twine or cotten or such like , wrapped round its toe, ive had that before the twine was embedded in the swelling which made it very hard to see, as i say, its just a shot in the dark i hope hes better by now anyway.

one other thing on instinct , why does the" cock drive the hen to nest"if their out all day that cock will drive all day, sometimes for about 5 days, i wonder if its natures way of taking the fat off the hen, to make it easier to lay, just a thought??

i used to do something similar but it was 'that the inside of the loft was painted a a quiet pale blue, and pale blue curtains[well to be honest it was pale blue bin bags over the glass windows] but it was far from dark, and there were plenty air vents in the loft, these were rolled down as the week went on, i had a camera in the loft with a moniter in the kitchen, where i could sit and watch them in perfect peace,and very light now and again there was an awkward cock , he was taken out.i got this idea fro my brother, who breeds canaries, i asked him why all the canary show pens were pale blue, he said it seems to have a calming effect on the birds. i did use a red light for the xmas race one year , fanciers were calling it the red light system, i had some funny knocks at the door, but thats another story ;D ;D ;D p.s i won 500 pounds in that race, true ;D

totally agree with you bruno, especially, after working for vydex at blackpool show saw fanciers hand over 4 hundred pounds for products ,never seen there name on results, pigeon fanciers are being ripped off, but its their money, so good luck to them, wouldnt be me.

i was thinking of your post and the fine sand, i would definately want air holes in the bottom of the pan , but i wondered if you stuck a fine gause on the underside of the nest pan, but would agree with tt the tobacco stalks take a bit of beating, and it certainly can make them work whilst carrying them, especialy when their cut up, it keeps a good airflow in the nest pan, i was going to try pine needles [advised by hyacinth] but been off my feet for a few weeks due to illness.at the moment their just mated and i have shavings down, [i only keep about 22 stock birds, and give the ybs to friends, forum members] anyway wish you luck mobster,and good flying

i dont think there is any differance, its just getting the dose right as its really for humans, in fact when i was in hospital the other week ,i noticed i had a drip of flagyl, i should have asked them about it, but unfortunately i was in a lot of pain , so that was the last thing on my mind, but i was surprised to see them giving me that had i had been a bit better i would have asked them for a spare pint or two of it ;D ;D ;D

if you used fine sand , surely it would drop out the holes in the bottom of the nest pan, if you lifted it up to clean the box, please dont think im trying to be cheeky as i dont mean it that way, i suppose it would be comfortable for the birds sitting ,i would be interested to see some opinions myself, hope this is taken the right way mobster.
