  1. as you will have probably noticed , ive been at the comp , the early hours ofthe morning,,,,, this is because of sleeplessness, caused shocking back pain caused by an arthritic desease, but certainly no joke,,,its agony,,,,,, anyone else have this problem , and any advice as to how they manage their birds etc
  2. its certainly some collection for a 14 year old lad , i suppose its one of these hobbies that you can have a break from, then allways go back to it,,,,[unlike pigeons ;D ;D ;D]
  3. aye ,,like me,, skint ;D ;D ;D
  4. would have liked to have seen an answer to your post also barblebury :) seems it drifted off a bit
  5. pigeon fanciersare famous for gossip and rumour ,, any news about this race in my opinion , should be ,,fact,,,, not rumour theres an old true saying ,,,," jedburgh justice" which, if you look at your history booksit means ,,"hang them first try them later" as this was a law in jedburgh , many years ago [it sometimes happens unnofficialy to this day]

    Shooting.

seven years ago, i had a gun pointed at me,,a wittness to a trial,, the matter was reported to the police at howdenhall police station ,,,yet there was nothing done,, this seems to be a shocking trait nowadays, i admit this must be difficult for the police , but when caught these [some of them] youngsters, should be severely punished ,, which does not happen,,,,,,community service :-/ ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, [ a few weeks ago the sunday mail had done an article through me,," titled pigeons not guns" all photographs were taken of youngsters with pigeons , pigeon basics was to be mentioned, as the key to help these young folks,[ the webmaster gave me the go ahead],,the article was finished,] but sadly a so called pigeon fancier phoned up the sunday mail and this article was cancelled, ,, a lot of people dont know that, but me ,, i know that]
  7. i would agree with this post,, i have done this myself ,,,only when i feel they have enough sense in their head to cope,, its a hard way ,, you may loose a few to begin with ,,,,but youll cut your losses later
  8. hi westy, reckon a good widowhood mix up to 300 miles ,, but differant alltogether with races further than that , when they need the body building food such as beans ,,peanuts etc [higher protein mix]
  9. good luck with your race , , wish you all good returns
  10. as tammy says the the f cast is not too great,, bad up our way anyway ,, damp with cold e, winds
  11. i would only do this if really neccessary b4 racing started,, but would put garlic in the water 4,,,5,, times a week sometimes :)quite regularly,,,,only my opinion,, its good for so many things ,,,good for the blood ,good for the respiratory system, its the allicin in it that has the goodness [even antibiotic qualities], but if this is boiled it will take away the goodness,, i used to make it up in a glass lemonade bottle add hot water ,not boiling [otherwise break the bottle ;D ;D ;D] but to me ,, would say fantastic stuff ,, and being a tight scotsman ,,,its cheap ;D ;D ;D
  12. yes , i would agree with that max, but off course i wouldnt expect them to be perfectly fit at this time of the year , i have often noticed that pigeons really on top form ,show pink skin on the breast and looks a bit like glossy thin cling film, unlike the unfit bird showing a flaky blueish colour, i personally would recomend the old garlic , even chopping a bit the size of a maple pea, and popping down their throat,, i have found that this has enhanced the fall of down feathers,, garlic is cheap and has some great qualities to it
  13. yes ben ,,why not ,, its a hobby that pleases you ,, ill bet youll have some very interesting rings from other parts of the world , i have a n,p,s, ring [national pigeon service ] 1945 ring , its quite amazing how this ring has been the basis for some great conversations about all the war pigeons etc.
  14. very good of darran ,, look forward to seeing pics ben :) good luck
  15. great stuff paulo ,, lots of hard work there by the looks of it, but my goodness your getting there now ,, all looking good ,, best of luck paul ,,,
  16. have to thank speck and hubby mark for the way they looked after me and the kind offer of giving me a break , met a few forum members , really enjoyed the chat,,,,,,one thing i must say is , ive never ever seen pigeons so attached to their owner , quite amazing really, birds landing on her head , shoulders etc , speck talking to them all the time , no wonder she does well, these birds were in fabulous condition,, she obviosly spends a lot of time with these birds to have them as confident as that,,,it really was a pleasure to see :)
  17. really i think ,,,its not the time you put in to the birds ,,,,its what you do with the time you put in to the birds ,,,good luck mark :)

  20. i would definately prefer natural for the real long hard distance races,, and the old saying fifer " the auld heid for the hard road" :)
  21. freezing ,, misty , rainy,,,,damp :) even the birds look depressed :) strange though , like humans, they fairly come to life in the sunshine [if you can remember what that is up here :) ] certainly not training weather ah well , back to the long johns ,,,,,,,over my kilt ;D ;D ;D
  22. yes ,, i also have noticed this ,,, strange really :-/ but have noticed the hens doing better as the season rolls on

    Ventilation

another very important feature in racing pigeons,,,ventilation ,, in my opinion the more ventilation [with dryness] the birds keep far more healthier,, ,, another point maybe worth pondering over is temperature,,,,, would you keep down the temp [wouldnt need to at the mo ;D]at this time of the year ,i,e next few weeks, for pigeons you would like conditioned for , say june , and off course the opposite for birds to be conditioned early,,, the reason im saying this is a fellow fancier kept his birds in a concrete garage [converted] this loft was freezing until the middle of june , when the heat began to get through ,, this chap flew exceptionaly well in nationals in july, but never b4 it, ,,,,,,worth pondering over
  24. very handy post for racing ,,nearing
  25. now that this is a year later , thought it would be an interesting topic , but would maybe add to it about thoughts on natural system
