Maybe some of the doos are not ready (fit enough physically and mentally) for the first national. Gone are the days when you can send them to get fit and they plod up the road, this doesn't happen nowadays. I've no complaints personally with returns from the 2 nats 9/10 and 16/20 but I do believe its better to avoid sending yearlings to the first race and bet these are the majority of the losses.

Stick to your plan unless injuries come into play although I'm sending a yearling hen to Reims due to her condition
