  1. can someone tell me please exactly where and when this auction is? Lee
  2. good man! im really looking forward to it, but im going to be a year behind you, because im going to spend the next 12 months finding a suitable family of birds, so i'll only be ready this time next year all being well, and im going to be starting small, half a dozen stock birds plus my logans. Have you decided on a family yet??? Lee
  3. thanks Jimmy, that does help alot. Im working on the theory i have a year to join a club, learn who's doing well at the distance races and hope to buy some young birds. Thanks again Lee
  4. Hi guys and gals, i have been toying for some time with putting my white logans to the test next year or the year after when we finally move house and in order to compare them to other birds i was going to buy another family to race alongside. i intend to race natural, allowing open hole for the majority of the time. Ive kept pigeons for 15 yrs. im led to believe that logans are distance birds??? so i was thinking of some other long distance family like jan aardens. BUT i only want a few birds, i dont want hundreds of birds due to space, finances and time, so my questions are these please if i can have your honest - but gentle - opinions!!!! What is the minimum number of birds i should try to start off with? Is it possible to be selective about which races to enter i.e. not every race? Am i being unrealistic wanting to race distance from the outset, without having raced before? thanks in advance Lee
  5. pigeon princess???

    Cost of racing

  8. i had something similar last weekend, let the birds out for exercise and one came back an hour later than the others. Its flights were covered in dark looking marks, which were easily seen because all my birds are white. no marks on any other feathers. whilst i'll never know what caused it i have concluded the bird must have flown or landed somewhere it couldnt initially get out of, my initial thought was a chimney pot, and as it has flapped to get out, it's flights have got dirty. just an idea Lee

    any ideas

i dont race but broke a dozen young birds to my loft this year by getting into an evening time feeding routine. then when i was happy the birds were responsive to my whistle i let them out about half an hour before it went dark. because it was late and they were hungry they only went up to the roof and came in when called. i did this every day for a fortnight, slowly increasing the amount of time they had out. the advantage of doing it before dark, is that if they go up and get spooked, they dont have all day to get lost so dont go too far. only lost one YB off the loft, although one did come back but was killed by the dog
  10. would I be right in thinking if you put your birds in the one loft, you dont get them back? Is it common for other flyers to train and fly other people's birds?
  11. thanks guys
  12. Hi guys, Lee here, Ive been on here a while, having kept white racers for 12 months or so. reading another post I would like to put my whites to the test but dont have too much time available at the moment. Is it possible for a novice to enter young birds in the one loft race to see if they are any good??? Would I have to be a member of a club or is it OK just to have my own rings on the birds from the RPRA? Would I need to vaccinate or is that done at the one loft? Any advice would be greatfully received - sorry if these are stupid questions!!! Lee
  13. Im thoroughly enjoying this thread guys, as I keep a dozen whites for enjoyment not racing, but the more I read the more I want to put them to the test! I have mainly logans from two different lines and one busshaert hen. Thinking of crossing all 3 lines for a bit of vigour.... Just about to move house 30 miles thugh so will have to start again next year and put the current birds to stock. Anyone on here from the Todmorden Homing Society or nearby willing to babysit a newbie?????? Lee
  14. Hi guys, sorry to be the bearer of bad news but Im not sure old yellow has a case. Legally - an auction is known as an 'invitation to treat', the potential buyer makes an offer which it is then up to the seller to accept. The seller has the choice whether he accepts that bid or not. Just being the highest bidder doesnt mean the seller has to accept that highest bid. In a straightforward sale/purchase, a bird is on 'offer' and if a buyer then 'accepts' that offer, a binding contract is made, as long as there are no other terms which have been breached. The law of contract revolves around offer and acceptance - an auction lot is not an offer, therefore the seller is in the stronger position. sorry old yellow Lee

  20. whereabouts are you history man? are you a pigeon fancier?
  21. what dimensions is it please?
  22. I can definitely recommend these birds to anyone, if I had the room, Id have snapped TWRM's hand off for some more!!! Im planning on breeding my young from TWRM to Pecked hens Logans next year! Both have great birds and are honest and reliable to deal with. Lee
  23. i know im new to racers, and im gonna sound thick but how do you have 2009 youngsters available now? are these advanced bookings????? can someone please explain? Lee sorted - it's been explained!!!
  24. I disagree Phil. People who breed to show obviously shouldnt keep birds not up to show standard because of limited room etc, but birds that aren't up to standard shouldnt automatically be binned. What about new fanciers and youngsters who just want a few pretty birds to look at? Why should they buy show quality birds at show quality prices? I started off in this hobby buying poor quality birds from the local auction. Because of the number of different breeds available it kept me interested all these years. Ive never had an interest in showing so poor quality birds are fine by me, as long as they are healthy and look nice!!! Just my opinion Lee
