  1. hi every one just showing you my new loft which was put up yesterday by barnsley lofts and pigeon supplies many thanks to the lads for all there hard work.

Very nice loft !!!!!!, Congratulations on your effort, you should be very proud of it. I've always believed & felt (had many an argument at times  ;D ;D ;D) that we have a responsibility to our sport in general, to build nice lofts etc for the public & neighbours which see them, which you have done 100% in my view.

I've noticed the 3 vents in the front of the loft etc. Could you explain to me ???, if there is any other vents or air flow within the loft, just as a matter of interest.

    Enjoy.

  2. Must admit to withdrawing all 'additives' like vinegar and garlic when I have youngsters in the nest. Breeders, G10s, Hormoform, minerals, grits, and plain fresh water, 2/3 times a day.

Also struck me that powdered babies milk isn't 'natural' its man-made and judging from 'breast is best' campaign is a poor substitute for the real thing, which amongst others contains the antibodies the baby's immune system needs. Maybe another reason for todays 'less-hardy' population?

    Of course it's not natural !!!!!!!  ;) ;) ;) I've attempted in the past  ;D ;D ;D to find a supplier of the real thing for the birds  :D :D :D but I for some reason ???? struck trouble  :) :). One could say  :X :X :X.

So I, along with many others in this sport etc, decided to use the next best thing on offer (baby milk powder) Which when you look at it, has many different vitamins & minerals in it's content, which can only help the birds

    (Could be wrong thou).

Now!!!!!!!. What I do is, I mix 50% baby milk powder & 50% milk powder together & give it to the birds every 2nd day. Especially in the breeding season etc. You may like to try it one day ???????. You could be surprized at the babies you could breed.

Now!!!!!!!! "Re Purists" on the other topic on garlic here etc. You may be correct in what you say & believe, & I do not have a problem with your thoughts what so ever. That's what this great site is all about, one could say.

But what I will say is !!!!!!!. I have found on the internet etc, if one does enough surfing around, you will find someone who will say. Black is blue or the sun rises in the west & sets in the east, as an example. It's all a matter of interpretation for what I see.

Also, what I will say is !!!!!!! I have not been to a Vet in nearly 10 years now, or bought medication etc on the internet & I'm quite happy with the system (right or wrong) I have in place for the birds, & will continue on down the path that I've chosen to travel. Thou I'm quickly coming to the end of it  ;D ;D ;D "Unfortunately".

    Enjoy.

  3. well my rabbits are dead and i have a huge bag of pellets standing around.

can i use them or not i sprinkled a few into my hens feeder and they are gone! :P

You certainly can !!!!!!!!. All you would be doing is giving your birds greens etc, in given your birds these pellets, or you could if you wish. Mix some of them in there water troughs for them to drink etc. The end result will be the same.

    Enjoy

  4. well not really, but now i have your attention if anyone has a couple of White delbar hens for sale i could find a couple of tenners or so

    kev

;D ;D ;D ;D you may be old "Old Guy"  :) :) :) But to me !!!!!!, you are a very smart man etc.  :D :D :D. You have learnt the art, of how to gain peoples attention, one could say. "Terrible what a free $ or 2 can do to us at times"

    Cracker post !!!!!!!!!  ;) ;) ;)  I just love it.

    Enjoy

  5. hi,can anyone tell me what i can give one off my hens, went in this morning and she was sat hunched up/feathers blown just sat looking half asleep.it wont eat its food and ive looked down its throat and nothing there.shes not that bad,ive seen worse but rather sort it now if it is something ...may be just a bit off it,might be ok tommorrow??? i dont know.?...was ok last night.

With this experience/problem that your having now etc, if you only learn one thing out of this experience. It should be !!!!!!!, in my view. Never place any new pigeon you may happen to be given/bought in with your own birds etc. Have a holding pen somewhere where you can keep them for 3 to 4 weeks just to be on the safe side, & you may find, you will never have this problem again. In the future.

    Enjoy

  6. I'm very excited at prospect of training my new racers when the time comes & phillip's gonna be exhausted from the grilling i'm gonna give him at the weekend!  ;D I'm sucking up as much info as poss & trying to get as much info as poss, i'm not a total novice as i've been flying a kit of rollers & had some other types but this here racing is a different league!... Was wondering if any of you can remember some of the mistakes you made when starting up?

    yours in sport, james.

The biggest mistake I made etc  ;D ;D ;D was getting involved with pigeons in the first place  :P :P :P & I've been trying to rectify my mistake, for 50 odd years. So can anyone here help me, or am I a lost cause like many others here on this site. As some would say at times.

    Enjoy

  7. does no one give to charity anymore ill give £6 each even if i dont go. :o

;D ;D ;D of course we do ????  :P :P :P There is all different types of charity in life etc  :D :D :D & some of us here suspect I think  :X :X :X which charity, we may be supporting if we donate  ;D ;D ;D & if I'm correct !!!!!! we are not that generous. One could say.

PS. If I 'm wrong in my assumption ??????? I do apologize.

    Enjoy

  8.

Well yes agree with you there, i guess the belgians were trying to translate themselfs.

    ;D  ;D ;D The way I read it etc  :D :D :D they were translated by a "Pom"  ;) ;) ;) in my view.

    M. Monsees, Cadoxton - Barry. Glamorgan. Great Britain. Still !!!!! I like to be fare & reasonable in my posts here. So we will just say ?????  ;) ;) ;) he had a leg stretched across "The Pond", in both countries, & leave it at that.

    Enjoy.

  9. 101 methods by Jules Gallez, yes maybe a bit old but what i like about it is that you find very much common sense in it, cheap and simple ways to improve yourself as a fancier and cheap and simple ways to improve your birds health etc.

Hogni !!!!!!! I will endorse your views here 100% (Top Books) But the thing that amuses me, every time I read them etc. Is all the spelling mistakes in them

(No spell check) in those days  ;D ;D ;D Quite extraordinary !!!!!! & I just wonder at times. How they were ever allowed to go to print. Maybe ??????  ;D ;D ;D they just thought, us silly old pigeon flyers. Would never notice.

Well !!!!!!! I did, along with many others I presume.

    Enjoy

    CHEERS MATE IT'S GOOD TO KNOW WHO YOUR FRIENDS ARE ;) ;) ;) 8) 8) 8) 8)

If you were a smart man (Like my mate Vic ?)  ;D ;D ;D & been a bit earlier etc & not been at the pub  :D :D :D You could have thrown a few sausages on the fire & had a free barbecue, & enjoyed yourself at the time. One could say.

    Enjoy

  11. is it as good to use garlic granules insted of garlic cloves in pigeons water

Many years ago now, I read an article about Entione Devos (Belgium flyer) & he mixed up enough garlic water etc for ten days in a large container at his lofts, & then placed it in there water trough every day.

Now !!!!!, what I do is, I purchase at the local supermarket in a jar, ( costs me a dollar) garlic cloves concentrate 97% garlic with a bit of vinegar etc, & every Sunday night, I mix up 7 - 1 litre jars with lids of garlic & water 1 spoonful per jar etc & give to the birds most days. it really does stink  ;D ;D ;D especially after a week & my wife (she who must be obeyed) will not allow me to do it in the house in the kitchen. Outside every time for me when I do it etc.

"The purists"  ;D ;D ;D may say use garlic gloves in there natural form. But to me, you can carry things a bit to far at times one could say. So that is why ???? I have the system in place which I have/use.

    Enjoy

  12. not meaning to doubt fifer and doo's reply's

but adding more dust to the loft cant be good for the birds or the owner

Bart !!!!!!, Many people make the mistake (Re Dust) that pigeons breathe the same way as humans etc. "They Don't" Please dont ask me, for a scientific explanation. Dust for many pigeon flyers can become quite a problem regards their health etc. But pigeons !!!!, they can cope quite well. thats why deep litter can be so successful for the birds. Many more people would use deep litter I'm sure. If it was not for the dust factor, which at times tends to build up in many of these lofts, one could say.

    Enjoy

  13. C'mon! Lennut Tar, Vic's no mug, but lately looks like a Toby Jug. I still like to do the times cryptic crossword, (occasionally).      I'm not near has sharp as I was yesterday. But not too blunt either. (Unless someone rubs me up the wrong way) ;D ;D I am also a sudoku fan, which helps, keeps me from meandering into sin  and debauchery. Now you come clean!, And tell us all Why you use "Lennut Tar"  as your nom de plume?  Just hoping that you dont make a quick exit for the Rat Tunnel, (reversal,) when things go against you. ;) Vic

;D ;D ;D Vic !!!!!! I'm not as smart as I was in my younger days etc either. Re non de plume, you have it *expletive removed* about I'm afraid  ;) ;) ;), one could say (reversal). Look it up on the internet, if it worries you that much here, what I call myself. You may find out what I did, for enjoyement  :X :X :X or have a chat to Sapper 756. He might know what I did (non de plume) in my younger days. To help pass the time for kicks & to take away the boredom.

    Enjoy

  14. Just got in from non-boozy nite out (designated driver  :() still someones gotta do it.  Thank you so much for all your help everyone.  Will take all advice on board & let you know how i get on.

Am bit aprhensive about handling them - have never done it.  They are getting used to me, been stroking them a little but they are so nervous.  Dont want to frighten the little fellas.  I know birds can be quite nervy.  Do you think I should wait until they are more settled around me (I've been feeding them and cleaning them out for a couple of years but my grandad obviously handled them) before i attempt to trim claws, will their claws become a problem after a while?

Off to bed now nite all

In simple laymans terms, "Not really" It would take quite a few years in your position etc in my view, before the claws/toes become a major problem. In a normal situation A pigeon uses it's toes to grip & hold onto its tail for flying & to scratch around the ground, the way I see it. If I may suggest to you, if they are longer than 1/2 an inch. Be a "Brave Girl"  ;D ;D ;D &  just cut them.

Now !!!!!!! Nice story "Re Baby pigeon" I have no doubt whatsoever, Grandad would be very pleased & proud, in what he helped to produce. One could say.

    Enjoy

  15. VIC you have'nt been in the pub this afternoon have you :-/ ;D ;D

No he hasn't ??????????  ;D ;D ;D But he has spent 55 years in the building industry etc (I was knackered after 40 years  ;) ;) ;)) So no other explanation is required for his problems. One could say, for what I see.

He could try ??????,  :P :P :P  turning his computor monitor on it's side,  ;) ;) ;) ;) "Could help". Seeing he is only a mad pigeon flyer.

    Enjoy

  16. try 2" centres m8 thats what i do

There is no argument, that dowel doors like the above look very nice, if on the outside of the loft etc. My problem with them !!!!!! is, that rats mice starlings & sparrows gain access, to easily to the birds inside.

    Enjoy.

  17. not havin ago at all  :-/ i hope u didnt pick me up wrong, i woz just saying wot i do dats all

Welcome aboard "DublinFlyer"  ;D ;D ;D I think you will fit in quite nicely  ;) ;) ;) here !!!!!!!, with those of us.  That have a sense of humour etc  :D :D :D.

Enjoy the site for what it is & don't take any notice of the "Grumpy old Men" here. They just live in a different world one could say, to some  of  us  "Unfortunately".

    Enjoy

  18. Thanks alot for your prompt responses.  I'm putting down lots more food than 2oz but they are not eating any more.  I guess it would make a difference that they are not very active cos they dont fly out daily.  They are too old.  They were on Bucktons quality racing pigeon food, high protein economy but did not seem to like this (their old feed was discontinued by the supplier as it was too expensive to make - but I do not know what was in it) I am now feeding them on a mixture of supreme poultry feed and split miaze but this is not that popular either!!! Any ideas of websites or where i can buy better food from.  Also their claws seem quite long as they are not fl;ying much should I be worried about this.  Do I need to take em for a manicure & pedicure!!!!  8)

Unfortunately I do not think it would be advisiable for me to have any more birds as I am a trolly dollly long haul and my mum looks after them when I am away.

they do seem to like it when im about so i dont think it would be fair to have any more  gutted as i do like em!!!

    I would

Yes !!!!!! You can quite easily cut there nails, just use a normal pair of nail clippers that you use on your own nails etc. Depending on how long they are, you may have to do it in stages (because of there old age as mentioned ) because you do not want to cut them to the stage that they bleed. Some even then file them smooth after cutting them etc. I never bother to do that in my position, I've found that they will even out, just by walking around the loft on the concrete floor.

PS. 17 years!!!!!!!!! Grandad, must have looked after them pretty dam good  :) :)I imagine  ;D ;D ;D

    Enjoy.

  19. coey, any good breeding mix will do, i just hopper feed a breeding mix + hormoform in their boxes and then give them a breeding mix twice a day. The droppings around the YBs nests are always firmer when you use maples etc

I've never fed a bean as such, to any pigeon in my life (green peas for me). The way I work, it's 40% protein for breeding, 25% protein for the moult & 15% protein for racing. But then !!!!!! Each to their own method (I prefer the "Kiss" method).

    Enjoy

  20. Well this is th eback garden to the property we are hoping to buy.

    It measures 85ft by 25ft  ;D

    Mark

One could say, a nice little patch !!!!!,  ;D ;D ;D I hope you are successful in your purchase of this property etc. Plenty of room there for what I see, many a winner has been bred in a much smaller yard/area  than the above. It all depends on the attention, one is prepared to give the birds.

    Enjoy.

  21. hi all. my son collects pigeon rings. he has gb and pl 08 in his collection. does anyone have any different 08 rings spare, i could possibly buy for him please? he was promised a austria 08 but never received it. thanks, anthony.

Email me an address & I will send him a few (free) I have left over from previous years etc, if he is interested.

    Enjoy

  22.

find this part of your quote a bit strange, have never known or heard of a flyaway with birds of that age , always thought they were in birds a lot younger

;D ;D ;D Come on over !!!!!!!  ;) ;) ;) I will put the lights on for you, so you can sit there & watch them fly all night etc. At times. High in the sky (full moon), you will be on your own thou. I will be in bed sound asleep, cause I've seen it to many times in the past to be amused, as one could say.

    Enjoy

  23. Quoted from Wiley

"Interesting topic", I for one, would refute the claim that overcrouwding is one of the main reasons that people here, have fly aways etc with pigeons. (look for another explanation) As an example !!!! In my local area as such, it is quite normal for the average pigeon flyer to have a 200 square foot area in his loft & keep 200 pigeons etc, (one pigeon one perch) which is well above the normal situation for many here. As mentioned,  fly-aways to the varst majority of flyers is not a great problem, thou it does happen at times here. In my situation I have had many fly aways over the years (more than most) & 99 times out of 100 it is always in the old bird race season when they are 9 to 12 months old & they are at there healthest & fittest time of their life, & except for the odd occassion (very few), most find there way home within the next few days etc. So for me !!!!, fly aways are more of a blessing than a tragedy.

But as I said above !!!!!! "Interesting topic".

    Enjoy.

  24. not sure , you may heve disabled them ,

    "Thanks"

    ;D ;D ;D I'm happy again  ;) ;) ;) There back, I was quite suicidal under the circumstances etc  :P :P :P. Bloody computors !!!!!!. Especially when you have crappy/old one like I have.

    Enjoy

  25. p.s By should be BYE ... catch up with you soon Mark, take care now.

Many would as I'm, be disappointed when we loose members here. I can only wish you & others here in this position. All the best in the future, in what ever endeavour you may pursue.

PS. Bit odd !!!!!!!! here. But can anyone tell me, why I have lost the funny faces/smiles section etc, which I quite enjoyed using at times. Not being a computer wizard (or pigeons), I'm baffled & confused in regards to this situation.

    Enjoy
