this is pefectly true , but if somebody had missed the hawk and injured the pigeon,,,,,nothing would happen,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, this is" not" nature in the raw ,, its rspb setting up nest boxes for the perigrines in most cities now,,, not at all natural ,, it may be a feral that time , but , between that perigrine, its mate , their offspring , their off spring ,etc etc., there will be many racing pigeons killed, not by a hawk killing one ,, the rest with sheer fright will be injured badly flying into all and sundry ,, loosing all their homing faculties

Very true what you say Jim !!!!! & I agree 100%. Certain people in our society as such, have to try understand, that when a hawk/falcon takes a bird etc out of a flock when racing etc, they are the lucky ones so to speak. Most of the others !!!!!! live in fear much of the time & loose their racing ability as such. One could say. Because most of them, fly looking over their shoulder all the time in terror, with the thought of the "Little black Flash"  ;D ;D ;D (Peregrine falcon) hitting them again & again, so to speak. So all these do gooders ???? who are breeding hawks /falcons etc for their own reasons, should look at the overall big picture & see the real damage that they are doing in my view, to all the other bird life.

    Enjoy.

  2. tony dont let everyone now my age i will have to buy a round. thanks for

your card ..i will treasure the one i got from the queen..

Casbri !!!!!!!! What an absolute fabulous effort on your behalf etc, to reach such an age & still be interested in this great sport of ours etc. It is just out of this world so to speak. The way I look at life "Well Done" You are a living treasure here in this sport of ours one could say  ;D ;D ;D in my view. But, be very careful from now on thou  :P :P :P Some may like to stuff you when the day comes  ;) ;) ;) Because your blood is worth bottling so to speak as we say & I take my hat of to you, & no way known will I ever reach your age. "You are in a class of your own".

    Enjoy.

  3. I want to ask this interesting and very complicated question. It will be 2008 breeding season in my country and I don't know how to pair my pigeons. I know that one theory said quality with quality. It is more chances to breed good pigeons. But what other criters do you use in your loft? Pair big hen with small cock. Pair big hen with dark eyes with light-colourated eyes cock. Pair young hen with old cock... Please tell me something about breeding in your loft. Maybe you know interesting article about that or something like that. Thanks for answers.

P.S. How to increase my chances to breed good pigeons...

Roamer1 !!!!!, It really is not all that complicated in my view, only if you wish to make it that way etc, like some people do for their own reasons.

Just a few pointers for you to ponder over, I'm quite sure others will give you more  excellant advise etc.

You are very fortunate today, in fact very fortunate etc. Because you have the internet at your disposal & it's a wonderful wonderful thing to learn by, not just for pigeons etc, but anything in general that may take your fancy, & something that many of us here did not have until recent times so to speak.

Pigeons need not be racing fit to breed etc, but they must be healthy 100%+ to gain the best out of them & 3 or 4 rounds should have no effect on there condition.

Never let your stock loft, become an old peoples home (Old pigeons) etc, as much as us old folk here, may like to think we are as good as we were, when we were young we ain't  ;D ;D ;D. So always have youth on your side (stock loft) & you will be much better off in the long run.

Decide at the start, whether you prefer short, middle or long distance racing & mate accordingly & be very wary of big pigeons as such.(not my cup of tea).

Being new to this sport, Study your pedigrees if you have them for your birds, they can be of great help to a new comer like yourself, as a starter.

Here is the "Cracker" to the puzzle  ;D ;D ;D study the eye, its a wonderful part of the pigeon etc (No not eye sign, that's crap  ;D ;D ;D) but the eye, different families have different coloured eyes so to speak & I much prefer to mate birds with different coloured eyes together, I like it that way . Now !!!! I have no time for pigeons with large pupils as such & I think you would be wise to do the same & attempt to breed pigeons with small pupils etc & the outer circle rim a fine line & the darker the better in my view, my good mate may advise otherwise to you. But always remember !!!!! no matter which advise/theory at times you may receive & use. Dont try & make it more complicated than it really needs to be, it will make you old & grumpy, very quickly, & take the enjoyment factor away from the sport, which is very important to me, & many others here, thou some may differ to me here, on this aspect.

To me a pigeon is like a clock!!!!!! in simple terms  ;D ;D ;D it has many moving parts to it, some may appear ????? more important than others so to speak, but to gain the best out of it (correct time) all parts must work in harmony with one another, exactly like a pigeon the way I see it. "But then " I'm only a simple man, & not to bright by some standards, of some people here  :P :P :P.

Always feed the best grain that you can obtain in your area, & as a rough guide

45% protein mix for breeding 25% protein mix for moulting & 15% protein mix for racing & you shouldn't go to far astray. well at least not in my view.

Thats enough for me now, lets just see what other people may have to say.

    Enjoy.

  4. alot of land around me but my garden is only 25 x25 feet

;D ;D ;D One could say !!!!!!!! If I had to fit my lofts in that space (25 x25) etc. The missus  ;) ;) ;) would have her washing on display, in the front garden so to speak, for the whole world to see & I wouldn't even wish that on anyone, not even my mate ????? Jack ??????  :D :D :D.

    Enjoy

  5. me and my loft

Looks pretty dam good to me also ;) ;) ;), "Well Done" But !!!!! with all that land around you etc, why in gods name  :P :P :P, would you place a clothes line, right in front of the loft so to speak. I pity your poor missus, with her washing etc  ;D ;D ;D.

PS I take it !!!!! you do not think a pantile (If thats the right word) roof is necessary.

    Enjoy.

  6. I just wanted to share with you an Article that I have read...said article is written by a fancier from elite club Philippine Homing Association here in the Philippines.... Mr. Ben Chua

" I have never encountered any scientific explanation of eyesign.

To me, the eyes may look good if it has all the rings present as the

expert would put it. But it should not be the basis for selecting a

bird whether for breeding or for racing. If you will be misguided by

eyesigns, you might only lose the years trying to breed the perfect

eye and still have no results. The best is to breed birds and race

them. Then take a look at the eye of your winners. And try to read

some eyesign theories. Make your own hypothesis and later you may or

may not find out the real answer. But just to read and base your

breeding by eyesign, is nonsense. All it takes to breed a winner is

not the eyes but the performance of good birds which will give you a

better chance of producing a good racer. Basing it on eyesign is not

only too complicated but in the real sense BASELESS.

    >

    > Another thought on eyesign.

    > Eyesign was conceptualized in the early years of pigeon racing by

some merchants to put more value to the birds they are selling. It

made them sell birds at a higher price. It has never been dealt with

by science nor has it been proven by any scientific explanation about

the effects of eyesign in the racing pigeon's performance. The only

scientific study conducted was that of the signs of health in a

pigeon. The eyes are glittering and the pigmentation is really very

pronounced, when the pigeon is in tip top condition. It is a visible

sign that the pigeon has enough vitality and ready to be raced or

    bred.

    >

    > With this article contribution of mine, I am not discouraging you

to believe in eyesign. I am just cautioning you that EYESIGN is just

a THEORY. And to delve into it too much might not be in essense a

good premise to start your pigeon racing career. We as fanciers must

concentrate more on the proper conditioning and breeding of our

pigeons, and to develop some knowledge and skills in selection rather

than concentrate on the EYESIGN of a pigeon. NEVER select a pigeon

base on EYESIGN. To you I ask this question --- WILL YOU CULL A

PROVEN BIRD WITH A BAD EYESIGN??? Definitely, NOT in a million years!

    >

    > To grade a pigeon base on eyesign is not only time consuming but

also baseless. Eyesigns for me are only for merchants and for people

who believe in eyesigns. Never have I heard a story that a Barcelona

Champion was bred because it's parents have great eyesign. It is

usually that the parents are themselves coming from a good origin of

    long distance birds.

    >

    > Hope this will open your mind in the THEORY... and I repeat..

THE "THEORY" OF EYESIGN, IT'S DEFINITELY NOT A FACT. BELIEVE IT OR

    NOT. IT'S UP TO YOU.

    thanks,

    PHILIPPINES

"Well done Batusai"  ;) ;) ;) ;D ;D ;D a very good post here, one could say in my view & the way I like to look at this subject etc, with an open mind so to speak. "Of cause" We do have our resident (By invitation) "Eye Sign Guru"  :D :D :D here  :P :P :P & I note ?????? he hasn't as yet come here, to give us all his wisdom etc  ;D ;D ;D. Still time will tell, what may happen.

    Enjoy

  7. hi everyone, just thought i would show you a video of a hawk attack in my local town centre which happened last week. this was witnessed by a crown of shoppers who stood near and watched the hawk attack the pigeon.

    debbie

Debbie there really are some sick/weird people around etc, but that's just life in general, as we say.

'Now" I was having a very pleasant Sunday morning here, before I come on line etc.

Cleaned the lofts, fed the hens fixed up the stockies so to speak, & I was in pigeon heaven you could say, watching the young cocks all enjoying themselves etc in the bath. "Guess what". Old Mrs Gosshawk :P :P :P, decided to join them in the bath (Easy feed) & all hell broke loose in the next few minutes  :D :D :D because her mate also  joined in too. Sorry !!!!  :P :P :P I always try to see the funny side of most situations, as sad as it is at times, for our poor old pigeons etc, but I would much prefer to be that way, if one is too survive in this sport.

    Enjoy

  8.

Yes you could come over and cut ours thats awfully good of you, go and do Tammys first though, then ours. ;D ;D...... it just goes to show that there is still some good people out there that still do a good turn for others. :D :D

Don't mention it  ;D ;D ;D my pleasure  :D :D :D thou at the moment ?????  I'm a bit tired up  :P :P :P so to speak, with one of those "Grumpy old Men" here, & he is attempting to make me, as miserable as he is one could say. I don't like his chances thou I'm afraid. In fact, I know !!!!! It's never ever going to happen.

    Enjoy.

  9.

We did have a good day, was a good week,[only downside was me having to carry all the shopping bags on Wednesday, would have been okay but was all your stuff, :'( :'( well 99 percent of it was  :( :(], here is the photo we took of the hen this morning that carded for us  at Blackpool [ my bird, your knowledge and advice .] with Tyson lurking in the background.

Nice picture  ;D ;D ;D "The dog" ?????? looks real interested  :D :D :D in the preceedings one could say & I love your grass  :P :P :P I might even come over & cut it for you & Chickadee, being the person that I'm  :) :) :) & being so generous.

PS. Well done to you both at Blackpool, with your pigeon etc. Not easy to do I imagine, with the competition being what it is.

    Enjoy.

  10. Sorry guys... bumped by TRAFFIC!

    BATUSAI!

    PHILIPPINES

Much better Batusai  ;D ;D ;D Plenty of fresh air there, for what I see  ;) ;) ;)

Don't worry to much about your little stuff up etc, I thought all the comments above were terrific  :P :P :P So it was well worth it (Thank you)  in my view.

    Enjoy.

  11. being new to  pigeons , you look about at the sales list see all these names of this pigeon that pigeon does nt  mean lot to a new boy like me , & with so many people just buying birds so sell on do ever know  ??)

I think it's fare to assume etc, that most of us take an interest in pedigrees. One could say. "But then" some of us learn real quick  ;D ;D ;D which part of our anatomy (Especially if you have an outhouse) to use them on. if the birds are no damm good  ;) ;) ;).

    Enjoy

  12. women alway's have a naughty streak in them {it's what make's them women}

Yes ?????? of course they do  ;D ;D ;D But isn't much more enjoyable here, chatting to someone like 883 Girl as an example  ;) ;) ;) than dealing with some of the "Grumpy old Men"  :D :D :D that at times, one has the pleasure of crossing swords with. So to speak  :P :P :P.

    Enjoy.

  13. Good news, the pigeon came back today. He was very tattered and had soot all over him. He was also very light and tired. The only thing I can think of is that he must have crawled his way out. Either way I was ecstatic to see him. ;D ;D

Their you go !!!!!!  ;D ;D ;D it's a nice feeling isn't, when you are lucky enough to get a bird back which you like/fancy ????. After a few days, when one thinks all is lost etc.

    Enjoy.

  14. I did say, during the last few weeks,  that Vic would be having a blow, from this

outrageous site  ;D ;)  But since then, I have received pms etc, urging me to keep my chin out , so to speak. from members who like the banter. Unfortunately my pc has taken a knock ( from the grandkids, I think.) which has affected myself replying to most of the supportive pm's that I have received. Thanks to the ones who understand! Always will try to help you all. Cheers, Vic.

Welcome back Again "Vic"  ;D ;D ;D ;) ;) ;) shall we just stick to the humerous banter on this site etc together & have a bit of fun here  :D :D :D & leave the past in the past as such  :P :P :P.

    Enjoy.

  15.   i'm ets neutral ( bit anti ).  but is there a model on the market which you can pre-select the number of birds you wish to clock on raceday? this is so i could go to work and not let on that half my birds arrive home mid-afternoon still eating chips and 'gasping for a fag'!

Good question !!!!!!! in my view, I also would like to know the answer to this one. For what I have seen, if one does not wish other members to know how your birds come home etc, you just disconnect the clock from the power source.

I gather from your comments above  ;D ;D ;D your birds are somewhat different from most flyers etc  :D :D :D because if one believes ?????? a fellow pigeon flyer on race day  :P :P :P they usually all come home together, one could say.

    Enjoy.

  16. 8 have died and i keep the loft very clean i soaked the felts in the bowls in durimitex before hand and they have tobbaco stalks  do you think it enough ?

Maybe I'm wrong ????? (Not unusal)  ;D ;D ;D. But I think you poisoned them all. In non scientific terms etc, eggs need to breath while in the nests one could say, & all that durimitex in the nest felts etc killed the lot, before they had a chance to hatch, in my view.

    Enjoy

  17. I honestly don´t know what to say, never seen anything like it.I know that ring collectors would love to have rings like this in thier collection but isn´t it enough just to have pic of the bird????

I know where your coming from Hogni !!!!!!  ;) ;) ;) But there are many strange people  :P :P :P (pigeon flyers) in this world etc, & that's just life. In the real world as such.

    Enjoy.

  18. hi sammy.

i am a rpra member and the rules was when i was a kid ,some 40+ years ago a dead heat was awarded as a joint 1st .

but then again the goal post might have been moved but then again the way the rpra moves i very much dought it.

but then again if the guy can show me an affiliated rpra club result showing a draw my *expletive removed* will be shown. ;D

    jimmy

Careful here  ;D ;D ;D we have woman & children on this site etc :D :D :D & the picture I have in front of me at this very moment  ;) ;) ;) is quite terrifying, & I would not wish them to see it etc  ;D ;D ;D

    Enjoy.

  19.

lol, pigeons really are a headache. Only started last year but already I feel 20yrs older.

Being the smart man that I'm  ;) ;) ;)  :P :P :P I can tell ya !!!!! You ain't gonna get any younger  :D :D :D if you stick with this caper of ours.

Now !!!!!!!, Would you believe, those 4 young hens which were missing from the other night etc for me, turned up today. 2 nights out on the town  ;D ;D ;D must have found some young buck ?????  ;) ;) somewhere, & were enjoying themselves etc. Thou 3 of them, are absolutely knackered

(Blowing a gale today)  ;D ;D ;D But I will fix them up  :X :X :X & it will help toughen them up, for what is in front of them down the track.

    Enjoy.

This kills nigh most nasties, and then washed in bleach, and let outside to dry for another day.

I don't know ????? whether its you or me Roland  ;D ;D ;D But I can't see a bloody thing  :P :P :P, like some others here have mentioned etc. So do something quick. I won't to see what a good loft looks like, before I build my next one  ;) ;) ;).

    Enjoy.

  21.

Carluke sometimes,  that is where I  get all mine from, dunno where he gets the peelets from though  ;D ;D ;D

:D :D :D poor old Alf  ;) ;) ;)  "Tammy 1" I think your trying to get him fired up  :P :P :P here now, with his peelets  ;D ;D ;D how could you be so cruel !!!!!!, to one of your mates here ??????.

    Enjoy

  22.

You will have to learn to take a lot of knocks racing pigeons if you get a bad race you could loose more than one in aday Are you realy cut out for it as it can be an up and down sport ??)

Is it ever ???????  ;D ;D ;D I'm missing 4 from my night of enjoyment  :P :P, when the birds decided in there wisdom ?????, to have a fun night out  :D :D :D recently here. Still I may still get 1 or 2 more home with a bit of luck etc, early days  ;) ;) yet.

    Enjoy.

  23. Hi Guyz/Gals

i need help quick,, one of my bird is ill,,? its all weak, very light, dosent eat very well, n its getting very thin..

What shall i do..? i do not hav any medicine or anything..?

One thing you might like to consider, along with the other good advise here etc. Is place a couple of small pieces of charcoal down its throat, does wonders at times, as strange as it may seem.

    Enjoy

  24. So then I guess the bird is a write off? Another one to add to the archive on my pigeon programme. :'(. Just dont like the thought of an animal suffering, leaves a horrible taste in my mouth. Would have been better if I found feathers and I then knew it was dead. Guess I just need to move on and concentrate on the others. Thanks for all the avice peeps.

    Regards

    David

David !!!!!!! Think of me  ;D ;D ;D I have 70 odd babies at this very moment out there flying in the dark etc  ;) ;) ;) somewhere. How many do you think, I will loose  :P :P :P. "Pigeons" they will drive you up the wall at times, if you let them.

    Enjoy
