funny that but very first grain merchant i asked "johnston and jeff ltd" (who make at least 21 pigeon corn mixes up) hav tic beans at 25.7 % and vetches or tares at 29.6% mabey not as well known as you think ????

    carbs

my "wrong" quotes come from a "table that shows the exact composition of each grain". ???????????????????

    carbs

next time your in the store check out the labels on those mixes and they might tell you the percentages of protein , carbs , fat and fibre. could be as simple as versalaga gerry for hi protein and versalaga energy for your high carbs ??

i dont know anything about those versalaga mixes ? i can only guess that any mix with the word energy in it would in fact be the high carb mix. carbs = energy a lot of corn merchants do bags of single seeds (my local one does) and what you could do is mix your own. ?

higherst protien = vetches (tares) at 22.9% folowed by tic beans at 20.1% highest carbs = maize at 65.7% followed by wheat at 64% so maize and wheat diet for your high carb days and tic beans and tares for high protein part of the week. job done !

    RSPB LETTER

all they are trying to do is baffle our brains with "numbers" the bottom line is this .....they stated "there is no evidence that they are affecting population levels of other birds." well i'll tell you what mister , talk to the members on this site (that span the uk) and i think you will find that the population of birds in their sheds is very much affected by the sparrow hawk !
  7. thats my point ! i couldnt see the connection . . . but i will settle for the "doves" thing.
  8. thanks coey, feel a bit better now.
  9. thanks steph, if it really is as simple as that, then i do feel thick !!
  10. hi all, now please dont think im thick but i need someone to explain something thats been a bit of a mystery to me for some time. the word "DOOS" ! now i know it obviously means pigeons and i get the impression its a scottish slang word (though i may be wrong) but what are the origins of the word and its relation to pigeons ??? for the life of me i cant see how you can get to DOO from pigeon......please enlighten me folks, cheers. p.s i bet there are one or two other members on the site that have wondered the same thing ?

    RSPB

just did my bit and mailed em this. sir, do the rspb have any plans ,for the near future,of controlling the growing population of raptors in the uk ? sparrow hawks and the like are destroying the population of small birds that once frequented our gardens both in the towns and countryside. sparrows, goldfinches, bullfinches, greenfinches, robins and tits were all visitors to my garden years ago but nowadays they are simply nowhere to be seen. having said that ,what i have seen is a sparrow hawk bold enough to sit in the middle of my lawn ripping a young blackbird to pieces ! so do the rspb have any plans to address this issue before the poor old raptors are starving to death because all the songbirds have been slaughtered ?
  13. they are smart little birds.
  14. looks gr8
  15. thats the only thing that matters. my problem is i just like pigeons. im forever looking at one fancy breed or another and saying to my self "i like them , i wouldnt mind a pair of those". i quite fancy a pair of mookees now !
  16. i dont think the pigeon in the 1st photo is a mookee and 2nd 1 is dodgey. PLEASE DONT GET THE HUMP OR BE OFFENDED dovescot ! i quote "its feathering and colouration are particulary interesting. The crown of the head is white, colour breaking off cleanly above the peaked crest. In the best examples the beak reflects this sharp colour demarcation, being too toned: white above and dark below. The two outer flight feathers should be white."

    fantails

    my 2 are exhibition fantails,
  19. its only four standard 6 x 3 aviary panels and a felt covered 3 x 3 slightly slanting roof. its dead simple, although i didnt make the actual panels i converted it from a bigger more traditional aviary.
  20. looks the biz
  21. i dont race to it or anything like that but as long as the birds get plenty of exercise (and its cleaned out regularly) they are happy as larry. a couple of years ago i had 2 nest boxes in there and bred from 2 pairs and this year it housed a single pair of show kings that reared 4 youngerns over 3 rounds. i have also had 'v' perches insted of nestboxes in there and kept up to 6 hens inside without any problems. its also handy for weaning youngsters or quarantining sick birds. below is an older photo of when the side was open wire and 4 'v' perchest were on the back wall.
  22. well done steph, thats bang on ! exhibition , indian , garden all looks good to me ! its the exhibition that holds its head right back, the others arnt too bad.
  23. gutted !
  24. see u there then
  25. u will do well 2 score in the king department cos i know from last year that there will be LOADS of kings there ! i look 4ward to seeing your holle croppers. they r a breed that appeals to me.
