REDCHEQHEN Posted June 19, 2018 Report Posted June 19, 2018 I have an old style meter - with the dials, for Electric - the gas meter is relatively new in comparison, installed in 2002 along with a gas supply! I have resisted all attempts to install a Smart Meter, but since joining Ovo energy - they have been persistent to say the least, phone calls nearly every week this last month. Now today I have had an e-mail: Would you believe it? Due to the age of your energy meter, its certification has expired. The Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy requires us (by law) to recertify it, so we're going to give you a completely new one. The great news is that you can now get a free smart meter upgrade, which means a shiny new meter to replace the old one. I don't want a smart meter, I don't want any disruption - I'm happy as I am thank you very much What are my rights? Can I request that they recertify my current ones? And then leave me alone for the next 10 years?or do I HAVE to have a smart meter?

That was the case last year, whether things have changed I don't know.If it is compulsory the electricity company can force entry, but I doubt it would happen.
greenlands Posted June 19, 2018 Report Posted June 19, 2018 As far as I know there are no rules to say you have to have a smart meter unless it stipulates so in your new contract when you joined OVO energy. Basically tell them that you don't want a smart meter until it becomes law. What the are trying to do is save on meter readers or save an incorrect meter reading.IF you do decide to have one fitted ask if you get a free day once once a week,my eldest lass gets FREE lecky on Sundays. Also ask if the tariff is the same with or without. I have both meters fit and to be honest, there's no problem, took about a hour and a half to fit them.Good luck Sue.
REDCHEQHEN Posted June 19, 2018 Author Report Posted June 19, 2018 The last meter reader who came to my house - I showed him how to read the electric meter and how it worked. He was new to the job and had not seen a meter like it before and not had any training, so rather than him being 10,000 units out - which he was - I gave him the training myself! I worked for the electricity board when it was a nationalised company in the 70's so know how to read a meter. I'm on a 2 year fixed rate with Ovo until Aug 2019
