WulDon Posted July 20, 2017 Report Posted July 20, 2017 Why the biggest national pigeon organisation in Scotland (SNFC) isn't using Geraldy or very similar transporters is beyond me... they have been using them successfully on the continent for decades! Most pigeons don't see past the three year stage now anyway due to very poor racing into Scotland, so young birds brought up with Geraldy's will know no difference when it comes to shavings or not, and as there years progress as old birds... shavings used in such a close proximity like a wicker basket with 'X' number of pigeons in them is only going to cause dust inhalation and this will effect the pigeons upper respiratory system... and when in the basket for 3 days plus and we must take into account the number of holdovers in recent years, in my opinion is going to have catastrophic consequences, not to mention drinkers being contaminated with soiled shavings... So Geraldy transportation or similar is the only way forward to enhance the pigeons welfare whilst on long journey's to the racepoints... But on the other hand we must not get to carried away by jumping too far up the wrong tree, Geraldy or similar transporters will not stop the raptor problem, clashing or miscalculated controlling... these are issues the committee must be looking into and addressing before next season regardless of what style of transporter is chosen... A big problem that requires much research and not sorted at a quick meeting or AGM based on proposals from Fed's or fanciers who are only thinking about improving the chances of there area doing better at national racing, I personally couldn't care where we race from as long as it was an improvement, because this years racing has been shocking with most lofts wiped out, clearly evident when the SNFC can only scrape together 802 entries for its final event!
dkj Posted July 20, 2017 Report Posted July 20, 2017 its what you put in the basket that counts, been with the two types of transporters and the same men do the winning. everybody have there own preferences. i like wicker baskets maybe old fashion but they worked for 100 years, but done well in geraldy also
KEVIN ELLIOTT Posted July 20, 2017 Report Posted July 20, 2017 There has been a lot of talk about the bad national races and the baskets used , there is no doubt the birds drink a lot more from the geraldy aluminium crate if you have'nt witnessed this you won't believe the differance compared to wicker , Last year I borrowed a geraldy crate to basket train my ybs ,I put 20 in the crate for 3 nights I also put the rest of my ybs in my wicker baskets also for 3 nights , in the wicker baskets the birds were lying down and relaxed when they were let out 2 went to drinker , the geraldy crate only one or two lay down but what shocked me was the heat when I opened the top flap to feed them each day and when I let them out 7 went to the drinker yet I watched most go for a drink at some time or other ,So maybe the metal crate is better for feed and drink but maybe it can over heat the birds , but for the distance races I am a lover of the shavings for comfort .I ask some of you to try this and see for yourself before shooting me down .Reason this is appearing now is I just read it out my breeding book for 2016 . FIRST OF ALL CAN YOU TELL US HOW MUCH BIRDS DID YOU PUTINTO THE WICKER BASKETS I HAVE BEEN TRANING MY YBS IN THE GERALDY CREATS FOR YEARS NOW AND DO NOT PUT MORE THAN 15 YBS TO A CREAT NO SHAVINGS JUST CARDBARD I HAVE NEVER FOUND ANY DIFRENCE TO THE GERALDY TO WCKERI FEED THEM IN TROUGH ONCE THAY HAVE EAT THERE FOOD I PUT A DRINKERIN FRONT I LEAVE THE YBS IN THERE FOR 3 TO 5 DAYS I NEVER LET THEMBACK INTO THE LOFT I LIB THEM OUT INTO THE SKY NOT INTO THE LOFTTHE WICKER BASKETS I HAVE DONE THE VERY SAME THING FOUND NO DIFRENCEBUT LETS THEM KNOW WHAT TO EXPECT ON A FRIDAY NIGHT ATB KEV

But most birds survived that. May be just good Doos eh .

Guest mambo Posted July 20, 2017 Report Posted July 20, 2017 No wicker or geraldy, has saved anything, year in and year out rings issued don't match up with birds flown, their ain't no federation having more doos than rings issued, and is a known fact if doos were to be sent transportation would be a struggle for the amount of rings issued losses are horrendous before racing begins, yet racing is getting the blame, bad race, most fancier's have lost 20% of their race team, before the first race, and 60% by the 4 race.to bop, wires, and. fear the opinon now is pigeon's are only as good as their last race
