Guest Hairylayer Posted August 2, 2015 Report Posted August 2, 2015 I've bred some youngsters and have them trapping well but they are just landing on the roof of the loft and wanting to trap back in almost straight away, If I put them out and call them they came straight back in but at what age would you expect them to start flying around the loft and ranging? Should I be keeping the sputnik shut till I want them in?The older ones are about 10 weeks old and the younger ones are 8 weeks old.Should I be chasing them off the roof of the loft?
dal2 Posted August 2, 2015 Report Posted August 2, 2015 Shut the trap. Only open the trap when ALL the birds are on the loft. The older ones should be well on the wing so maybe a bit of encouragement.If you have been feeding a bit heavy then the birds may be fat and uninterested in exercise so you may have to be firm with them initially u til they get on the wing.Control is what you need and feeding is the tool to use

Guest Hairylayer Posted August 2, 2015 Report Posted August 2, 2015 I've been keeping them quite tight on the feed to try and get them under control and to trap well, they are all hand fed out of my hands or food placed into the feeder, and I call them, whistle and shake the Tin through the feeding time.They have been going out about 3 weeks as sputnik wasn't fitted till then. Had a look at one of the DvDs buster really intresting but haven't had tons of time with work to watch them all. Will take some pictures in the morning as my lofts not at home greenbar, maybe that's not helping, maybe giving them an open loft for a day would help?
Wiley Posted August 2, 2015 Report Posted August 2, 2015 They need to be chased in my opinion, i reckon thryve been feed a high protein diet. Young birds should be fit enough to be trained by 12 weeks of age. Lighten there diet dramatically with barley. Too much protein in a youngsters diet makes them fat and lazy, as soon as young birds start perching the diet should be lighter to get them flying quickly

Get them up.

Valiant Fifer Posted August 2, 2015 Report Posted August 2, 2015 Yup patience is deffo the key with ybs. The landing board is meant to be a safe place to be. Put about 20% barley in the feed for 2/3 days then maybe as much as 30/40 % barley in fir a few more days that should get them up.Good luck.
