Good gesture Charlie-what race was it from Dumfries or Gretna?

Robert it was from Dumfries poor bugger got chased in to a closed window by the bop

Thanks Kenny. Every piece of information helps to complete the picture. Actually I was hoping it had been a Gretna pigeon but no matter which way we look at it the area from Dumfries and above looks like a disaster area as far as liberations are concerned. I think the wise men of Lanarkshire realised this when they composed their race Programme and that is the reason they swing out east before continuing down the M6.

I take my hat of to you guys in Ayrshire ,but I'm led to believe that some of Ayrshire race on the north road with

Good results ,so why don't the rest of you go on the north road if this is the case???? ,sorry for hijacking your thread.

No direspect to the North road boys, but they get bad races too, but the main reason I feel is the lack of distance involved.

I race North and would agree with this in principle. Less distance, less opportunity for the falcon to attack.

The route helps also. We race down the east coast, so the pigeons have somewhere to go (out to sea) when avoiding the falcon. When they come across country it is usually around the M8 corridor.

Seems when we race nearer Stirling, more inland, we hit more trouble. Others may have different opinions.

Having said that, distance is of no account, given Ayrshire's current season. They are having bother from 60 miles, so I would say route is the major factor. :)

Distance and raising the standards by flying in a National Club is everything. Racing North is a cop out by those who could not win when they went South. If you don't test your birds they will deteriorate.

Initially they formed a club with a radius designed to exclude John Barr and myself. They then opened the radius when they realised their organisation was uneconomic with the current radius.

They have losses as well there is no doubt of that.

It says it all when the worst flier in my club went with them and won his first race.

I have heard this said before, however anyone racing on the north that I speak to, state they prefer the racing because of less losses. I am unable to comment on that at this stage, having just started south this year.

I think if you are happy racing short distances, then the north is ok and because of the reduced distance there is less chance for attacks, although they do happen and pigeons are lost, no doubt regarding that, it is fact. Some are attempting Lerwick, I can only presume to increase the challenge and distance. I am sure there are good sprint pigeons around, however they are a different beast to distance pigeons.

Distance racing has its inherent difficulties, both in preparing the pigeons and obstacles en route. Definitely a different test for the fancier and pigeon.

National distance racing is different yet again and in my opinion, this is where the cream is found. :)
