dwh Posted July 13, 2014 Report Posted July 13, 2014 there's no easy answer to this i put a blue cock into the training pannier by mistake it was still squeaking it had 6 tosses then went into the race pannier [by mistake]]had a nght out but turned in nxt morning this cock won twice as a yearling topping the fed out of leicester he smashed his self up on the wires on a training toss but didnt do much at stock.would i do it again?i did crashed and burned  :o if i started racing again would i do it nota chance
Guest IB Posted July 14, 2014 Report Posted July 14, 2014 Same here Andy as long as its clean healthy and can hold its Own in crate, For me, that's what drew attention to the bird. I think that goes no matter what age or sex the bird is. There is a basket behaviour (called 'hiding'?) where a bird resorts to hiding under another and can end up scalped; Fed Officials took a cock out of the basket at our OB Open a few years ago, it was bloodied from top of the head to base of the neck. Officials were of the opinion if left in, it would have been dead next morning. Bird has to be fit in every respect, to go.
frankdooman Posted July 14, 2014 Report Posted July 14, 2014 Some birds squeak even when they are older especially when getting bullied in the basket. But if it was a squeaker, as long as it is healthy then it is up to the owner if he enters it or not.The basket convenor looks for injuries and health, nothing more imo. My grandfather had a yb that was a lot younger than the rest of his birds, it had a 6 mile toss and was jumped into Penrith 102 mls and it topped the fed, it squeaked all the way home lol.( that's true ) I agree wee have all made a mistake especially when in a hurry but they shouldn't go but I have timed a sqeeker put in by mistake early learning days
walterboswell59 Posted July 14, 2014 Report Posted July 14, 2014 if they can fly for 2 hours round my loft they go to training van then the race ive sent them and won with them often so its a deff yes for me but no harm pointing the bird out incase its been put in by mistake
Guest GAV Posted July 14, 2014 Report Posted July 14, 2014 I know mistakes can be made i.e. basketing the wrong bird but at the end of the day surely its up to the owner if he wants to send it jmo.
hotrod Posted July 14, 2014 Author Report Posted July 14, 2014 It was it's squeaking that alerted me to it being very young , plus it was running around with its wings quivering ,like one that's fell on to floor and getting chased , the owners g,son said it was his g,dads ,he wasn't there so he took it home as he didn't know if it should have been away or if it was a mistake , but since this happened the member seems to be unhappy with my actions , well I'm afraid I'm on the basket committee so tough . He said it was bred in March , so why is it still squeaking and acting like a squeaker ??? in July ???
Blue Chequer Pied Posted July 14, 2014 Report Posted July 14, 2014 It would be a NO from me for a few reasons. Firstly there is no time at basketing to get a potted history of each and every birds training or lack of it, when it was hatched, was it on darknes etc etc etc. Also if the guy is not there at the time to make the decision as to its suitability to enter a race then it is a NO. Secondly we have all heard about them 'slipping through the net' and going on to win but I think they are few and far between and strangely people are never keen to let you know when they fail (appreciate Davy Hogg's honesty on this one) Thirdly flying in a fed that stretches nearly 100 miles from East to West it would be a NO. Maybe different if the birds were all flying into a small area. So to summarise it's a NO from me.
