Why do some fanciers not feed maize to young birds, myself I've always gave them a mix, last few seasons Gem Irish.

What and why do you lads do ? :emoticon-0138-thinking: :emoticon-0138-thinking:

err yes and no Lindsay , depends what stage they are at .not until up on perches , then only as part of a mix .definitely when racing (for me) . each to their own tho, what works for some , may not work for others .

IMO maize isn't essential, what you must remember is the carbohydrates are burnt of very quickly, and are really only of use for the first hour of any given race, and then the bird uses it's fat reserves as it's main fuel for energy. I've fed maize when racing to my young birds during racing some years, and some years not, the result being there is no difference at all.

But when on the dark, and moulting my birds always have maize in a high protein mixture.
