anto b Posted January 5, 2014 Report Posted January 5, 2014 hello all , I have 12 late breds that I am planning to race in the 2nd half of the OB programme , they all got lightly trained . should I take young from them and race them or would it be best to just race and no breeding ? cheers , anto
andy Burgess Posted January 5, 2014 Report Posted January 5, 2014 more info Anto , are these your only birds ? if so ,yes breed some young ,would also breed if latebreds are "good uns" a new family maybe ? what system will you fly them on ?? how well and to what distance have you trained ? and what stage/distance do you intend starting them at ?
anto b Posted January 6, 2014 Author Report Posted January 6, 2014 hello andy , thanks for the reply , i also have 4 pairs that where raced and done ok in the club that i will breed from plus im bringing in 18 youngsters so i dont need to make up numbers . the late breds where gifted by 2 good fanciers in my fed and are well bred , they got about a dozen tosses in all directions up to 10 miles or so . the first race for them will be mallow ,co. cork 130 miles all going well . going to give roundabout a try . any advice would be great cheers, anto
andy Burgess Posted January 6, 2014 Report Posted January 6, 2014 if I were in your shoe,s ,depending on the distance you want to go out to ? get some training into them on the line of flight ,start at 10 mile ,when coming straight home ,increase the distance ,maybe a local trainer who takes other birds would be good , teaching them to "break for home" ? I would send the latebred hens to the first couple of races (personally think hens are more "hardy" ) then the latebred cocks ,giving all the latebreds around 4 races this season ,then put them bye for next year .the older pairs could then complete your old bird racing . I wouldn't breed , I would let them nest but not hatch ,putting pot eggs under ,separate after first race .that's the way I would tackle it , others may say different .good luck racing
anto b Posted January 6, 2014 Author Report Posted January 6, 2014 Thanks for that andy , gives me something to work with. Our programme has changed this year the races i can go for are mallow 130 m, skibbereen 174 & barleycove 194 m after that its over the water which i wouldnt send a late bred to. First old bird season so its all new to me , hopefully i can get them ri ght healthwise and well trained and give them a good go at it. Thanks again , Anto

Smithy1 Posted September 24, 2014 Report Posted September 24, 2014 Treat them the same as any other younger bird train well and race to 150-200 mls,, they dont know they are late breds. They are either good or bad, the same ratio as any other pigeons ...
