Guest stb- Posted February 9, 2013 Report Posted February 9, 2013 If I hold back on black minerals whilst the birds are rearing they'll go visit the chimney pots so would say its not the salt they're after.there is salt and sulphur in coal soot tony so prob is similar
Tony C Posted February 10, 2013 Report Posted February 10, 2013 THE CHIMNEY POTS? That's another new one again. i can only go one my own experience and never used it. =soot!
Rooster J. Cogburn Posted February 10, 2013 Report Posted February 10, 2013 read an article on Anderson & Brown,Kirkintilloch a while back-double SNFC Gold award winners They always provided crushed coal in front of the loft for the birds they claimed.Tryed it out and the birds seem to like it If its good enough for them, its good enough for me

Guest darren cantrill Posted February 16, 2013 Report Posted February 16, 2013 If I hold back on black minerals whilst the birds are rearing they'll go visit the chimney pots so would say its not the salt they're after. I have just observed my hens chimney potting but only to the guy next door who burns wood the other pots don't interest them stopped stressing about it I just let them get on with it was a bit scarey when I noticed the dark droppings but droppings dried up look tip top and I feed black red matrix and charcoal everyday obviously im missing something out cause the we buggers love his chimney pot I grew up in keresley village just off the m6 Corley services and the homefire plant next to cov colliery was amass with pigeons caked in black slag and coal my pigeons as a lad were black with the stuff all the time
Guest maricelbill Posted February 28, 2013 Report Posted February 28, 2013 i was so eager at one time i burned wood for the charcoal. (hadn't equated it to the soot though) i also used to drive many miles for spring water. all nonsense of course and more about keeping the fancier happy than the birds. there are good feeders and pretty poor ones. has anyone noted a correlation between these quirky habits of picking chimney pots etc and good and bad feeders.
Guest strapper Posted February 28, 2013 Report Posted February 28, 2013 Salt overdose can cause Hypernatraemia which will disturb the electrolyte balance; this is potentially life threatening. It depends how much salt one is given, i always give my birds both pink and black minerals.especially stockbirds who cant forage outside for those esential minerals.
Guest snowy2011 Posted March 1, 2013 Report Posted March 1, 2013 I was so confused on what to give my birds this year ie what colour minerals to give them asking about and got so many different answers so in the end I thought sod it. As I was in Blackpool I just went to all the different stores a bought all different stuff and mixed it all together. Then that way they have everything.

Guest snowy2011 Posted March 1, 2013 Report Posted March 1, 2013 Ha ha yer it's good but you run the risk of not geting what you want that is the only downside. Guess I just got lucky.....
