Saj Posted December 13, 2012 Report Posted December 13, 2012 I've got a few new birds and there in a seperate loft. There's one that has slimy green (very very dark green) droppings. Just wondered what it could be. Any suggestions would be appricated. It's not eating - so i've put in a cardboard box in kitchen near the radiator and hope to hand feed in the morning small seeds.
ghostrider Posted December 13, 2012 Report Posted December 13, 2012 sounds ominous.get it TESTED AS SOON AS.
Guest Dublin lofts Posted December 13, 2012 Report Posted December 13, 2012 if in douth its a bin bag job

The bird is not suffering from any eye problems, breathing or any discharge from the nose. Which chlamydia shows I really want to keep it for next years breeding programe - i'm thinking it could be a gut problem after reading this http://www.auspigeonco.com.au/Articles/Dropping_In_Race_Season.html
demolition man Posted December 14, 2012 Report Posted December 14, 2012 if in douth its a bin bag job I believe this to be very good advise, protect the loft from this bird its not worth the risk
Guest Owen Posted December 14, 2012 Report Posted December 14, 2012 Unless the bird has value I would get rid and quick. If you have other birds that look ill you should get them checked out by a Vet because you have breeding coming up and the last thing you need is a bunch of sick pigeons.
flying fifer Posted December 14, 2012 Report Posted December 14, 2012 Doesn't sound good, unless you can have the "slime" tested ASAP it's a bin job. Be vigilant with rest off birds, I WOULD SAY IT'S VIRAL BUT WITHOUT TESTING CAN'T BE 100%. How long has it been off food?
Guest geordiejen Posted December 14, 2012 Report Posted December 14, 2012 the droppings turn green when the bird stops eating mate its just bile but it could be salmonella is the white thats usually in the droppings yellow?there is no sure way of telling exactly what it is by looking at it.it should be tested in a lab but all diseases cannot be diagnosed from a dropping.you must keep it away from your stock.
gulkie Posted December 14, 2012 Report Posted December 14, 2012 Listen to the advice so far don't even consider this bird for your stock good pigeons never Take illnesses they always look a picture sick birds have a weakness and they will breed This into their young it has taking me years to learn this the best place for sick birds is inThe bin regardless of cost or history. Good luck .
Saj Posted December 14, 2012 Author Report Posted December 14, 2012 The bird has been removed into my kitchen next to the rad - i'm hand feeding it as it's not eating. I've put it on amoxicillin which we have in our home at 50mg per day (250mg capsule into 10ml of water - then used 2ml). If it improves by monday great but if not then its the bin. I spoke to the vet and he tells me he needs a reasonable amount of droppings - but as its not eating there not much point taking it there. I'm hoping it's salmonella or just the shock of travelling or the very cold weather we are having - plus its a young bird.
Guest geordiejen Posted December 14, 2012 Report Posted December 14, 2012 new birds can be a nightmare mate.sometimes the odd new bird just doesnt respond to anything as its so stressed,by all means try to save it if you feel this bird is important to your breeding.there is online droppings testing you can do thats cheaper than going through your local vet.

Guest geordiejen Posted December 15, 2012 Report Posted December 15, 2012 im sure weve all been ther and bought the t-shirt.the first few years i was keeping igeons i tried to save some of them with baytril and so on.with some success but to be honest it aint worth the hastle.lets say this bird does pull through and seems fine, come breeding season a few squeekers are lost due to sickness and you start to question yourself whether that wee pigeon i saved months ago could be contaminating the drinkers and infecting the youngsters, but that hen has 2 squeekers in the nest who look fine.cant remove this hen for that reason.could it be something else?warm humid loft environment?could a mouse have got in or maybe a wee sparrow through the sputniks?havent seen the parents pay them much attention the past day or two could it have been red mite.when i first got my wee squad of show racers they were in seperate pens for 2 weeks, half the droppings were green and slimy and the birds hardly ate for the first week.every time i went to feed them they would grunt in the pen as pushed themselves to the back of the pen to get as far away from me as possible.what i did was give them some yeast in the seed and a strong solution of multivit in the water and left them.it took 10 days for them to settle and for the first month they were kept together in the y/b section of the loft which was empty.
Guest ConsettFlyer12 Posted January 30, 2013 Report Posted January 30, 2013 I have a bird which has light green slimy dropping just the one what can this mean? the same?
