I have just watched this link and find it very thought provoking.I can give you two examples of what I have seen in recent years firstly I know one very successful pigeon racer whom I have heard claim on several occasions that he has never ever disposed of a pigeon.Secondly I personally heard one of the best pigeon men in Scotland publicly claim that the fancier`s best friend was the bin.I cannot comment any further on this other than to agree with a previous post that the less said about this the better and to applaud the vigilance of the administrators of this pigeon site.

if they take our sport into consideration, surely they will

Has no-one thought about the consequences of links like this which does in no way reflects the sport in this country and many will find distasteful.

the link was put in the BHW by the raptor thing that is going and do you not think nobody reads that a lot of what happens in America is exactly as it is here, maybe not such bad races but a lot of the rest is exactly the same maybe we do need to take a look at what we do

You'll probably remember Hyacinth, Tam. She warned us way back that PETA are mental, in fact she was a bit paranoid that they might be looking in on us?

They also had a go at Mike Tyson when he did the Discovery Channel pigeon series - it'll take a lot to knock that series I think.

PETA are against keeping pets. So it's not just racing pigeons they are gunning for.

Yes I remember her Ian and remember as well what she said about them a while back, like you say they are against everything, they had a thing going about catching fish the wrong way, wonder how they survive these members ,they must only eat grass as they are against harming any living thing

We must be careful, accentuate everything which is good about pigeon racing and be prepared to clean up our act where necessary, co-operate fully with DEFRA and make sure we can refute any accusations of cruelty made against us.

Agree with you we must keep good points about our great sport in the public mind at all times,

thats the same organisation that supposed to help to re home stray dogs and when they cant find a home for them they are put down ,quite sure it was roland that put a link on here a few years ago about them, an another organisation that makes MONEY by telling lies to the public

I wonder what HRH will make of it, after she races pigeons. :o

I am appalled that people on this forum think that we have something to hide and have to watch what we say. I think that we need to look carefully at what we are doing and try to make certain that we organise and run the sport as well as we can from both the pigeons' perspective and our own. I think that it is true to say that sports such as horse racing have come under scrutany because the Public will not stand for animals being treated cruelly as they see it. The RSPB and organisations like it would love to get rid of us because we are a thorn in their sides because we know far too much about their attitude to birds to suit them. I am sure that if we give them a chance they would love to turn the screw on us. The main arguement that PETA are using in America is that gambling is illegal in most American States except on Indian Reservations. They think that they can have pigeon racing banned because of the gambling. It is worth noting that PETA are against animals being used by humans for anything at all. If they had their way they would ban meat, leather, and anything that humans use of animal origines. They are currently attacking Mike Tyson the boxer because of his interest in racing pigeons.

I would argue that this situation could be beneficial because if we are wise we will look very carefully at the way we do things and iron out any areas that could attract criticism before we are forced to do so. The one thing I am sure we must deal with is our Public Image because the sound bite of "Flying Rats" is still a tag that many of the Public remember. We all know that the birds we keep are very well looked after and are the healthiest of specimens, because they have to be to do their job. This is something that we must get accross to the Man in the Street.

The one thing that I would be worried about is being tagged as being in some way similar to some of the cruel so called sports that go on in secret. I am proud of the fact that I race pigeons and that my birds are very well trained and managed. All I hope is that other people will step forward and present pigeon racing in the best possible light because it does a great deal of good for people both young and old. Not to mention the huge sums of money we raise to help others in need. Finally I am glad that this subject is being debated because perhaps we can now take all opinions into account and move forward to make the sport better understood by more people.
