Guest yorkshire terrier 77 Posted June 14, 2011 Report Posted June 14, 2011 I dont want to have to wait until next years young bird season to race so what are my options on this as i have only just aquired a loft and have only a pair of latebred young ones coming to me for breeding off , i have been told and have also read that latebreds are usualy only good for racing as two year olds after been trained with the following years young ones. this leaves me wanting . am i to late to get hold of any in season young ones so to speak so that i may be able to train them for old bird racing as yearlings next season as i wont be able to do the young bird season this year. i will be joining the club at the next agm meeting in january. what options do i have or do i have to wait until next years young bird races??? i can wait 6 months but not sure i can last a whole year of waiting to race !!!! any feedback on this would be greatly apreciated. thanks.
OLDYELLOW Posted June 14, 2011 Report Posted June 14, 2011 walk before you can run might be worth getting a bit of experience at at local club if anyone wants a hand , pointless getting latebreds unless wanting them for stock birds late breds could leave you very disappointed
Wiley Posted June 14, 2011 Report Posted June 14, 2011 Chris Balson and Henry Gonsalves were advocates for doing this, by getting say 10 old rings, pairing up early to mid november, training them when 3 months old, which would be early march time, train them really hard, and then compete with them against peoples old birds, they found the young birds where even beating there old birds middle april. Always been tempted to experiment with it, however never found the time, but might be ideal for you.
kelly tom Posted June 14, 2011 Report Posted June 14, 2011 Are you at the school in the morning,if you are come and see me as i have 2 young birds that left the nest today that you can have. Tom

Guest cloud 9 Posted June 15, 2011 Report Posted June 15, 2011 a lot of fanciers over the next 8 to 10 weeks wud of sorted the young birds wot they want to keep 4 next year , try get a few of them surplas youngsters an have a go at brakeing them youngsters to your shed,1 thing you need with pigeons is patience, as someone stated walk b4 u can run , ,, all the best
showman Posted June 15, 2011 Report Posted June 15, 2011 The training and racing of late-breds can be a very difficult and often dissapointing procedure. It would take someone with years of experience to know how to succesfully handle late-breds. As I've said on many occasions, one of the greatest attributes of a fancier is patience. Don't be in a hurry to get racing !! There is much to learn, and starting OB racing next year with a team of late breds would not be my idea of initiating my racing 'career'. Get yourself sorted with a few stock birds for next year to breed yourself a team, and then you will be off to a better and more enjoyable start. OMO.

geordie1234 Posted June 16, 2011 Report Posted June 16, 2011 One thing i have learned in the year i have had pigeons is PATIENCE everytime i take a shortcut it never works I had 20 odd latebreds last year ended up with 16 moved house broke 10 after breeding my yb team these havent been raced this year but will go as trainers to the young birds races and a comeback race next week then if anything is left they will stay to race as 2 year olds
Guest yorkshire terrier 77 Posted June 16, 2011 Report Posted June 16, 2011 thanks lads all the imput is very helpfull , and its good to see that evrybody does things there own way , suppose if we all did the same it wouldant be quite the same . i have kept pigeons before when i was younger and i had latebreds then but if i am honest i dont remember racing them ,and only got to the breeding stage before i had to move home and stoped keepong them after that. i know not to expect anything for the first few years, all i am after realy until the youngbirds start racing is something to help me hone in on my skills ,ie telling when a bird is fit and or coming onto some form and also just getting back into the swing of things where racing is concernd,so i make any silly mistakes before i get to my first lot of young birds whitch will form my future race team , if you know what i mean. evrybody seems to have there own idea of what a latebred is and if getting birds that are just out of the early bird catagory and can be trained this year still appeals to me just for that purpose, i will get some latebreds for some breeding stock to get my young bird team tho. does this sound ok ? while i am on i do respect evrything you guys are saying to me and taking it on board. anyway i got to get a shift on with loft if i am to do any of that lol .
