Do you start tossing young birds when they finished moulting? Or at a particular age like 3 or 4 months old? ...OR should I start as soon as the birds begin routing (ranging)more than half an hour, regardless of their age?

You see, I have a team of 15 YBs of different ages. The older ones are 8 to 14 weeks while the younger ones are 5 to 7 weeks old. Most of them are on the moulting process while the the others still have their downy feathers intact and are still squeaking. Nevertheless, they're ranging for 20 to 45 minutes (or more) in the morning (the older ones often go out of sight for 30 mins to an hour). They also fly 15 to 30 minutes in the afternoon (sometimes) and evening.

Now, should I start road training soon or should I wait until a few weeks before the actual race?

I think the race here in my country doesn't start yet until about 3 to 5 months from now -August or Oct... (I'm new the sport, still no ideas about clubs' race schedules yet)

Need some sound advice, thanks :)

Earliest i would start ybs off would be 6 weeks before there first race once you start training you have to keep it up or they'll fall to bits :)

we all have different ways to train yb,s. last season my yb,s where flying very well round loft and ranging well .my yb,s got 2 x 10 mile tranning toss before 1st race and very little after that.i had a good season with them and got of the mark at 1st race for them being 1st club 8th fed 2000 approx birds 60 mile race the last yb race was Newark open 1st 2nd and 3rd club 6th 9th and 10 fed 216 mile. i will do the same this year as i now don,t see the point of stressing yb,s out by basketing them most day to train them (and fly the gauntlet of hawks)this is only my opinion as i have said we all do yb,s a wee bit different.

Very intresting maybe this way people would not lose so many youngbirds

do you mid me asking did you suffer many losses during racing

the thing is you could probably send all your young birds untrained the drag would bring them back home if they stay with the main batch as most do i know of a few fanciers that actually do this , but not something I would do , 60 miles is short for a first race with ybs your not training for fitness there young and healthy . So yes by all means basket train them so the experience is not as stressful , but a few tosses up to 30 mile will put them in good order for there racing career ahead , once my birds go to there first race I rarely return them to a basket for training as Geo said there better off at home not running the bop gauntlet getting home :) and where you can train with as many fanciers at same time , I believe there's safety in numbers

if my young birds were ranging for half an hour at a time they'd be put in the basket, no matter what age! It doesn't have to be far, it can be little miles(say 12 miles) but often. You can win in certain federations training no further than 12 miles. However dependent on how far your first race is i would like to get them to that race point at least 4 times before the first young bird race. School them and school them hard. For a while id keep them tokey, they need to know they depend on you, so when you call they listen, this would be done on the first few tosses until there smashing the back of the shed. Youngsters that are schooled when there not to old are much better then 5 month old babies who just have the first toss.
