All my days i have liberated my doos in Rural area's when tossing them myself.

I'm now thinking of training from built up area's after my experience with the Peregrines the other day.

Anyone see where i'm coming from???

I remember a photo in the sun newspaper of a peregrine with a pheasant in celtic park they had to remove the pheasant before the game started my mate used to fly his pouters from a loft in plots just off the old Edinburgh road we saw a male peregrine fly over looked as if it came from the provanmill gas tanks and heading to parkhead they are everywere.

Might sound stupid but I see more in the towns than I see in country side... This could just be that they are only crossing villages and towns and that why I see them and out in the country they are high and hunting but I doubt it... I believe best way to train birds is single ups... Batch attracts the percy where a lone pigeon may not. Only my opinion tho but we have not had losses training so far this way

releasing off high grounds help a little if you release off low ground or in a valley well they will have a party

i find a spot where they are free from falcons a few trips before hand sorts that out and i tend not to move from there on race day well im prepared to take my chances

Frank,

Cally may have lost a bird at GC not sure but he has lost several very good bird at the loft. Lesmahagow is surounded by at lest 6 pair of peregrines and we get hit as they return home or flying round the loft. Kerr Stainthorpe lost a good 2 year old last week.

look out for possible percy nest sites, try and stay clear of them i know its hard to do but if everybody keeps talking like on this thread then you may be able to cut losses, pigeons are heavy to carry for percy so they wont be hunting to far from nest sites.best of luck guys.

there are perigrine nesting in the town centre of coatbridge john and they will be nesting in other town centres as well so dont think it would make much difference only thing thats going to make an impact on them is if fanciers do something to protect THEIR birds and not expect everyone else to do it :emoticon-0157-sun:

Yeah that's right Geo Kenny Ross is his name he bought the loft from somebody.

IMO the thing thats becoming clear from the spread of peregrines into built-up areas is that their tactics change. In my own area have been told of one that attacks the birds sitting on the loft as if trying to drive them into the air; of another that was sitting on a house roof and made a horizontal attack as ferals flew by; Yet another local fancier talks about them hunting in pairs with his birds ranging & being chased back to the loft with 2 peregrines in tow.

Trying to think like a peregrine, for me it doesn't sound awfy safe to try the classic 200mph perpendicular drop above treetops or rooftops, especially high rise buildings with all that mobile phone mast stuff on top.

So local knowledge got to play a part in protecting your birds, avoiding known hotspots, its been a while since I trained from the Clyde in Glasgow City Centre, not that far from Glasgow Green , Kingston Bridge side of Glasgow Central Railway Bridge, I had no problems that year from there, but had I known that something hunted that area, I wouldn't have used it.

still think the area 20-30 mile south and south east of Larkhall is the main training area for our pigeons

now if we had to go further south say just near Moffat/Selkirk

i reckon by the time our birds got to these area's the would be low and in racing mode it would make it difficult but not impossible for percy to strike

last year i trained from Edinburgh out to Pathhead in three's or fours and only once did we get trouble

mind and breed extra youngbirds and latebreds to offset our losses !!!
