yeboah Posted December 5, 2010 Report Posted December 5, 2010 In the early summer of 1977 I was travelling to Glasgow for the early shift in Orkney Street, Govan when I came on a man liberating pigeons in a field just south of Barrhead. It was about 5 a.m..Iwas so impressed with this guy I never got his name but I know he was a Doctor and I never forgot him and I thought what a marvellous thing to be involved in.Twenty years later I finally realised my ambition when I was in a position to keep racing pigeons and with the great assistance of someone who became a close friend (you know who you are) I built a loft and obtained some doos.I was then struck down with cancer and required an operation after which I was given 3 months to live (that was 13 years ago)I underwent a very traumatic six months of chemotherapy during the time of my first racing season but I persevered and raced throughout the programme. The pigeons had to be looked after and trained and the loft scraped and kept clean and while it would be foolish to say that the pigeons saved my life they gave me a reason to keep going as they do to this day.I do not think I will ever be a great pigeon fancier but I will race them as long as I am able.I am now secretary of my club and president of my Federation and these are duties I undertake to put something back into the wonderful pigeon fancy.Walter ,A wonderful post what you have not stated because it is not in your nature to be attention seeking ,since becoming club secretary through your hard work in writing a new constitution we the club members were fortunate enough to receive new ets systems via lottery award ,also many other clubs the length and breadth of the country have also been successful using your constitution. At fed level since you took over the post of president every member now receives regular news letter updates informing them of any ongoings ,You have also been instrumental in providing the federation with a new transporter and at present every pannier is being refurbished .A BIG WELL DONE

frank-123 Posted December 5, 2010 Report Posted December 5, 2010 Its a wonderful sport that anyone can take part and compete. To breed a pigeon from a baby then for that pigeon to reward you by coming home to take a prize. I love a really sunny morning when everyone is still in there bed and you can sit and watch your birds exercise up and down the sky coffee in hand and the peace and quiet. The build up from a friday night until liberation then eyes to the sky to waitnothing beats the feeling when you see a pigeon trap from any race short or long and the thought of it might be a winner

Guest Owen Posted December 5, 2010 Report Posted December 5, 2010 My Mother was born in 1910 to a small Farmer and worked with animals most of her life. She always thought that animals were important to keep people going because they had to be looked after at all times, regardless of weather or illness. According to her they had to be feed and cleaned every day to a routine, and she certaily did that. Mother lived until she was 97 and was fully active until the end of her life.I would never want to be without livestock and I know I could not sit in a house and watch tele most of the time or spend more than a small amount of time on holiday wandering around bored out of my skull. As for watching sport, I would not like the lack of participation and would not be able to become just an observer living the pretence of being able to influence something that is away out of my control, as some seem to be able to do.For me, nothing can better the feeling of pleasure that I get when one of my pigeons wins a race and I enjoy the fact that my wife and I can celibrate together. I often think that these feelings of eurforia are only possible because of the way that pigeon racing can make you feel when things go wrong. Whatever it is, I know I love the birds and the pleasures they bring to my life.
Guest bigda Posted December 5, 2010 Report Posted December 5, 2010 keeping pigeons, kind of grows on youeach year, and i am glad they did on others, like all animals they have to be worked, to help them self survive, every one was glad the racing or homing pigeon developed over the yearsand have rewarded mankind in there faith they saved loads of lives during the wars, and if there was ever another, they will do it again, i like all working animals the sheep dog, the dog trained for the blind, the rescue dog, gun dog, racing dog, guard dog. don't care for the lap dog or catthats why pigeons should be raced in case we need to call on them again
