Present day would probably be around 1200 miles Palamos to Scotland,in 1845 a pigeon that had flown some 5400 miles, which could have been about 7000 miles because it was said at the time that the bird would not have crossed the Sahara desert dropped dead a mile from his loft in London.

The best performance in recent years was 1,260 miles in 1986 Rome to Fraserburgh by Wilson Noble.

Welcome to Pigeon Basics Red Max , great performance that by Wilson Noble :)

Yes i was well pleased when he clocked as i had bet a club member £20 that he would.Shame all the birds in the race were out of race time.He still paid up though. :D

There were 32 returnees from the 329 birds entered in the 1986 Rome race, the first being Harry Kennett's (Orpington) silver hen which took 11 days. The problem was not the distance but the blind valleys that took birds to 15,000 ft before they realised that they could not go any higher, then retraced their steps (or wingbeats !) The BBC administered the race and silver medals were awarded to all returnees at the Club's 1986 Presentation that year. Not one of those 32 birds was ever sold, and only two of the medals have ever come on to the market, one being gifted to HQ RPRA the other sold at auction to raise funds for a fancier whose home/business was burned down. It raised £120 I think if memory serves me rightly.

Would take an Iron pigeon to fly those kinna distances.I know of John Ellis good cock "Endurance" and I think Jock Reid timed a pigeon in from one of the Spanish racepoints??

Would yous say theres a distance though when its no longer really a race as such but a test of survival??

an old fancier a mile along the road from our loft sent many times to palamos and san sebastian and had birds recorded, when visiting him one day i asked him why he had no water in the loft and he said he just let the doos fly down to the burn for a drink. :D:o :o great memories.

answer to your question lewis i think 630ish is racing doos!!!!!!!!!!!! me and dad were lucky enough in the 80s to time 3 birds in 90 mins from 614mls with the SNFC on the shift in what turned out a fast race. :) :) :) more memories. :D

Have been working north of lockerbie recently and there is a man who has a couple of horses in a small paddock at the rear of his house noticed as i passed in the mornings him feeding some feral pigeons word must travel quickly amongst our feathered friends as all the ferals from the town hall approx 60 now fly the three miles north in the mornings to be fed before returning to roost at nights :emoticon-0157-sun:
