Delboy Posted January 16, 2009 Report Posted January 16, 2009 scrape out twice a week in off season, Oct- April .Build up the pigeons immune system with a little cross infection. In racing season, cleaned out twice a day, washed down with jeyes and torched once a month. My birds look a picture all year round with very little ailments
mark Posted January 16, 2009 Report Posted January 16, 2009 Am not on about improving performance in your pigeons. If you keep your loft clean. I take it your lofts like a sh** house then ;D. I just like to keep my lofts clean i asked a simple question how do you know my loft is like a sh** house.? i suppose how clean you keep your loft depends how many hours you work in a day. if you work long hours must be harder to keep it cleaner during the winter, due to getting darker earlier. oh yeah and to answer your question i do keep my loft clean.
grizzal Posted January 16, 2009 Report Posted January 16, 2009 Agree with Mark depends on what hours u work ,so they get cleaned when time allows this is in the winter months. summer is easier because longer day light cleaned out more

Hogni Posted January 16, 2009 Report Posted January 16, 2009 I don´t clean unless i have reason to, that is if the loft gets wet or if there is high humidity, in the winter months here in Iceland we sometimes have very high humidity % and sometimes it rains for weeks, horizontal rain is my porsonal favorite, because after i also have to dry the back wall of the loft. So i´d say in the winter i clean maybe 1-2 a week but in summer 1 a month at the most, no diseases or health problems of any kind really.

Jeyes Fluid has been around since Adam was a boy, but it is still a DEFRA-approved disnifectant for use in all avian diseases.
Guest IB Posted January 16, 2009 Report Posted January 16, 2009 yep try ed loft white what u think to lime idea ? I think you'll find that Loft White is limestone flour. You pay more for the Colombine brand name, and the small size, what you pay for 5 kg will get you a 25 kg bag of lime. Both excellent at drying up damp patches, smells nice, looks nice, and needs brushed in.
ferry1 Posted January 17, 2009 Report Posted January 17, 2009 i use lime on my floors and cleaned out twice a day three times if i have time and bleech my drinkers every day
Guest IB Posted January 17, 2009 Report Posted January 17, 2009 I think the post about time of year and working hours is correct, these usually determine how often you clean out, norm seems to be once a day winter, twice a day all other times. I have deep litter, thats raked and riddled once a week, every week. But I also clean my perches and nest boxes, once a day winter, twice a day rest of year. I use dry disinfectant floor dressings too.
breakaway Posted January 21, 2009 Report Posted January 21, 2009 mix a bit of floorwhite with water then use a paint brush to apply to the floor of your loft & nestboxes while the section is empty so it can dry out ! keeps white for a bit longer
weecunny Posted January 21, 2009 Report Posted January 21, 2009 mine a sh** hoos but never a sick bird and they hold there own at the races lolll fit ti show anday of the year lololol
Guest youngzimmy Posted January 21, 2009 Report Posted January 21, 2009 good sharp scrapper a brush shovel and a bucket
Guest asha Posted January 22, 2009 Report Posted January 22, 2009 Typical on here,Mark makes good point and you lot ,just like a pack of romanian dogs pick on him, pathetic, you lot should think for yourselves, not try to keep eachother happy. 1) No scraper ever made keeps loft germfree. 2) Bleaching may kill short term(few minutes) but when it turns back to h20 flaming may dry the top,but will drive water deeper in. 3) Loft White/lime,who can it dry up? it justs sucks up the damp, but it`s still there, and i dryer lofts may cause problems foe birds eye nose and throat. so if you post, try to post good imformation, not old wives tells.

OK Asha, Mark may well have made a good point, and a few have knocked him, but you have knocked everyone, both now and in the past mate. So how about you giving a a bit of good advice for a change and tell us all how you keep your loft clean, instead of knocking everyone. Never see you giving much advice Mr Know It All
alex wight Posted January 22, 2009 Report Posted January 22, 2009 I dont think anyone is knocking anyone, members are merely stating what they use, as the post requests. Each and everyone to their own, some dont agree with others but if we were all the same, life would be dull. Why cant some people respect others opinions?
alex wight Posted January 22, 2009 Report Posted January 22, 2009 My work governs how much activity i can have in the loft. I dont have anything on the floor and clean out once a week. My stock birds are locked in their boxes with a bed of wood shavings, which get changed every week. My young birds have sloping perches and are cleaned one a week. I dont seem to get much diseases with the birds, so i do what i,ve done in the past. I use sorgene 5 or jeyes fluid once cleaned out, both have a refreshing smell.
Guest Posted January 22, 2009 Report Posted January 22, 2009 I dont think anyone is knocking anyone, members are merely stating what they use, as the post requests. Exactly my point. But asha hasn't stated what he uses or does when he cleans his loft out,, and very rarely tells us what he does on any topic when he posts. I never see him giving advice only criticising others when they give their opinion. That is all I am pointing out.

Hello m8, i wasnt knocking anything you said, in fact i agree with you, asha is forever ripping into people with at times ludicrous ideas or sugestions, and appears just to stir things. I t would be nice for him to put some of his wealth of knowledge up for others to benefit from, but i dont think that will ever happen

Guest strapper Posted January 22, 2009 Report Posted January 22, 2009 i dont clean my loft everyday, i use deep litter any sh!t lumps are cleaned through the week at intervals and perches, and a thorough scrape through at weekends. i put loft whitener down underneath clean littler and older littler and its bone dry! any litter that is soiled gets disposed of in white bags and gets collected by wormtech once a week..a company that gives you the bags free and collects anything from pigeon muck to hedge clippings and paper. we all get problems with our birds now and again so trying to deny it is pointless. a loft can have lots of muck everywhere but theres dirty and theres diiiirty!! i also believe that having a clean loft daily(upto each person) isnt going to adhance your chances of winning, its what birds and health wise you have in your loft that will do that. if anyone has seen the boshchiend flyers dvd ,have a look whats on their floor...dried muck and they dont do too bad now! reason they give is...it builds up a stronger imunity in their birds. before anyone starts on i wouldnt this and wouldnt that...well everyone to their own and who can say whats best for them...when good performances are put up by fanciers with lofts that half wouldnt have in their propeties.

I have to agree as long as not damp and no mould and birds are limited to exposure of droppings there immunity improves , however during racing i wouldnt advocate this as birds wil get contaminated from cross infections in the basket and also stress causes canker
Guest Posted January 22, 2009 Report Posted January 22, 2009 He doesn't clean out, he is so full of wisdom and knowledge he has developed a strain of pigeons that do powdered S***E and that is why he is so backward in coming forward with his advice. If you believe that then you will believe all the other c**p he comes out with.
Diamond dave Posted January 22, 2009 Report Posted January 22, 2009 Whichever way you do it - make sure you WEAR A MASK. I have tried the lime and it goes straight to my chest but I dont have the same problem with loft white -anyone know why? D.D.
