Guest IB Posted October 18, 2010 Report Posted October 18, 2010 is there anything the birds can pick up from slugs ? noticed other day some of the hens have watery dropping not too watery that is . and when i was cleaning the hoper noticed slugs had been all over it . have dealt with the slugs . just wandered if the birds could pick anything up Intermediate host for tapeworm. Hens seem to relish baby ones. I have my suspicion about hairworm, have had a problem with birds eating slugs & snails, and had hairworm last two years.
Wiley Posted October 18, 2010 Report Posted October 18, 2010 your birds will also have a very high cocci count as well as worms
steve d Posted October 19, 2010 Report Posted October 19, 2010 I am sure I read by a vet that slugs can cause paratyphus, I know this sounds far fetched but I will try and findthe book out.
David_vet Posted October 19, 2010 Report Posted October 19, 2010 In reverse order. 1. If slugs go over areas that are contaminated with dust or droppings that harbour paratyphoid then yes they could infect susceptible birds if eaten. 2. Agree 100% - tapeworms would be my biggest worry bt there are also strains of hairworm that require an intermediate host but again it could simply be that eggs have stuck to the slug and were eaten with the slug. David
steve d Posted October 20, 2010 Report Posted October 20, 2010 Thanks for reply David, I am correct in assuming that the slimy trail left behind by snail's can cause E-Coli ?
Guest geordiejen Posted November 14, 2010 Report Posted November 14, 2010 i get the odd slug in the loft also i do think they can give the birds worms so if i find any slugs in the loft i fling them as far away as possible but they are bloody horrible to hold.
Guest REDFOXKRAUTHS Posted November 14, 2010 Report Posted November 14, 2010 Best thing to do is get a cow lick (salt lick) and put it out side you loft the salt will disperse when it rains , when it drys out salt crystals will be left, when slugs go over it they will die because of the salt you can also do this by desolving salt in to hot water and pooring it round every where

eastcoaster Posted November 16, 2010 Report Posted November 16, 2010 Thanks for reply David, I am correct in assuming that the slimy trail left behind by snail's can cause E-Coli ? All these are true as i posted a few weeks ago that they got into my stock hens and i had to kill 2 good hens (too far gone before i noticed )but there are conflicting idea`s that they need to eat the slug i believe this is not the case .
Guest challengerlofts Posted December 12, 2010 Report Posted December 12, 2010 I do used rock salt. I put some around and under the shed. Also around the fence. It works for me.
