PigeonClarke Posted September 27, 2010 Report Posted September 27, 2010 Hi, Anyone have any opinions on the best way (feed, supplements) to add body weight to birds for shows?
clockman Posted September 27, 2010 Report Posted September 27, 2010 Hi, Anyone have any opinions on the best way (feed, supplements) to add body weight to birds for shows?Plenty beans,
pjc Posted September 27, 2010 Report Posted September 27, 2010 A good show bird as with a good racer needs a good constitution and with a good ballanced diet will hold a good body weight! If it doesn't have a natural good body then the birds constitution isn't right and cull them just keeping those that are right!
showman Posted September 27, 2010 Report Posted September 27, 2010 Agree with Phil. I have never had to, nor would want to, add anything to their diet. The body weight for showing should be a natural part of the individual pigeon. If you do change your feeding in an attempt to make them gain body weight, there is a very fine line you walk between natural body weight and fat. With show racers, a good judge will know the difference, once they handle the pigeon.
JohnQuinn Posted September 27, 2010 Report Posted September 27, 2010 I have no knowledge of show racers but i enter my race birds in the shows with a few red cards for my efforts, generally they are very near race weight as i don't fatten my birds at any time of the year. My advice therefore is to enter the ones you like in the hand and leave the rest at home. jmo

Would you send them to a race if they didn't come to hand and had no reason to be down on body weight?

JohnQuinn Posted October 1, 2010 Report Posted October 1, 2010 If you pick out the birds that come to hand then whats wrong with the rest? Would you send them to a race if they didn't come to hand and had no reason to be down on body weight? Unlike the shows, a bird that either doesn't settle in your hand or holds its tail up or whatever else i don't like will still win races, so generally i only enter birds that sit well in my hand in the shows. Ps. i didn't say they were Down on body weight, i said i don't Fatten them.

Youll not get many wae the tail up in the air tae win races unless its a blaw hame. Never had yin on a tester, ever, Tend tae cull them after a month.

Tail in the air John? or just bad handlers?. Have had some ugly brutes that handle like the Queen Mary that have taken tickets but the tail in the air like a wren is the curse as far as am concerned.
JohnQuinn Posted October 1, 2010 Report Posted October 1, 2010 Honestly i got a Ch hen along with 5 others from a good friend/fancier, i hated the sight of it as it would wrestle about with its tail up every time i picked it up. That hen became known in my loft as the Money Spinner, as you could put the kettle on for her when she was in the basket. She also bred a good Ck who was like a dart in the hand, i was embarrassed handing this Ck over at marking time, he was eventually called Told You So and won just over £3000 in 5 seasons racing to me. He in turn is the Gsire to my 1st West section Ypres this year. I wouldn't show her either cos she wrestles the same as her GGDam!! On my Life this is true. All from a hen you would no doubt have binned, and i nearly done it myself, i disliked her so much.

They bred a couple o younguns that were, in my opinion, poor killed one and the other had 3 tickets weel in frae SNFC so its not set in stone. As a rule i find it the best way. I justify it by saying that i dont have enough room and also that i would not buy doos wae the tail up. Have probs killed a few that should have kept but live by the sword die by the sword. You got tickets for SNFC Dinner/pres on a complete change o subject?

Guest geordiejen Posted October 11, 2010 Report Posted October 11, 2010 get a heavy mix of feed.i use breed and wean all year round and dont pay much attention to what im feeding them lol they gain good body weight naturally anyway.as long as they are kept in good health then their shouldnt be much problem.maybe you are confused between good body weight and getting them fat. full greasy scottish brealfast with plenty of totty scones should do
blaz Posted October 11, 2010 Report Posted October 11, 2010 peanuts or chicken layer pellets 24% protein. i was lucky enough to handle the best in show at rosewell show last year .yes the pigeon had plenty body but i was surprised at how light it was in my hands like holding a light piece of cork.
kiateapigeons Posted October 13, 2010 Report Posted October 13, 2010 we used to give our west roller and tumbler mix to get body on them for a show but as we dont have wests we now use a mixture of roller and tumbler plus some breed and wean as you say geordie as long as htey are kept healthy they should gain weight no probs
