Guest skippersworld Posted August 30, 2010 Report Posted August 30, 2010 Just wondering, what type of perch would pigeons like best? Natural perch i.e branches or the type which i see a lot of people use? (arrow head shape)

alex wight Posted August 30, 2010 Report Posted August 30, 2010 arrow head is probably "v" perches that your are referring to which are very good. Lift off perches are very good also, and you can also have a beam put up as well. It depends what suits you, and your birds. I use lift off perches, the negative is that hens pair up and lay in them. Positives are that there is less mess on the floor, and you only need to clean them out every few weeks. V perches would leave mes on the floor, but they wouldnt allow nesting. The beam is the same as the v. hope that helps, alex.
sapper756 Posted August 30, 2010 Report Posted August 30, 2010 I personally prefer V percheshttp://forum.pigeonbasics.org/public/style_emoticons/default/wink.gif http://www.pigeonmania.com/wp-content/uploads/v-perches-300x226.jpgV perch in the loft One of the easiest and quickest methods of motivating the males before a race is to bring a new mobile V perch in the loft, and place it somewhere where all the males can claim it (not very close to any of their nest boxes). They will always keep an eye on the V perch and one of them will always be on it. In a loft with no V perches, this is a real candy . Have fun! Oh, don’t forget to remove the V-perch after the race, because in the long run, one male will get to own it and… no more fun

Tony C Posted August 30, 2010 Report Posted August 30, 2010 For new starters in the game box perches, simply because its easier to pick up the pigeons from these. My preference is the slope back perches/ lift of perches, they dont stand in their own droppings with these and they're easy to clean.
Guest skippersworld Posted August 31, 2010 Report Posted August 31, 2010 Well what i was thinking of doing was down the longer side of the shed, have the V perches, then at the end of the shed have nesting boxes! How does that sound?
Guest gladdo Posted August 31, 2010 Report Posted August 31, 2010 Sounds good there mate ... the birds seem to like the v perches but boxes are good for cocks when they mature a little !!! best of luck mate. mikey

Guest skippersworld Posted August 31, 2010 Report Posted August 31, 2010 Okie, thanks for the help people! will stick to the V perches and nest boxes!
Guest IB Posted August 31, 2010 Report Posted August 31, 2010 Well what i was thinking of doing was down the longer side of the shed, have the V perches, then at the end of the shed have nesting boxes! How does that sound? You will probably need perches as well as the nest boxes. The bird of each pair which is not sitting (eggs / YBs) will not stay in the box, it will look to perch away from it. So have a look to see how you can achieve that before you start building.
Guest bakes Posted August 31, 2010 Report Posted August 31, 2010 the box perchs i made for the youngbird loft fitted grills on um so there not standing in there own crap lift grills scrape out put grills back down all clean there big enough to put a nest bowl in and still have enough room in the box perch for the bird to stand front of box or move about in box all the best.
