Colin the only time you need to stop is when the birds are being treated because they are ill.

If a treatment has such an effect that it stops your birds from exercise/training properly then i would advise not to use it.

if only treating as a preventative then no need to stop but i got to ask if you are not racing and there is nothing wrong with the birds why do you need to treat.

To the original question - It is unthinkable to train pigeons which are under treatment, quite apart from the 'illness' you have to consider possible side-effects to the meds.

However, following through the thread, in my opinion your meds regime seems pointless , sick pigeons do not fly, especially ones suffering from a respiratory illness. Following on from my answer (above) then it seems absolutely pointless to treat pigeons for something they haven't got, then have to stop their training because of it, especially when so called preventative treatments don't work because you cannot prevent something which you obviously haven't got.

i get what your saying ! but making sure their tubes are clear before putting them through a hefty training program is helping them not harming them surely (i hope ) it is a similar regime before the old bird season and i has never done them any harm . but i do accept your points thats why i put this up for discusion and opinion .

they are on ornisol not ornistop sorry .

There are very few pigeon treatments that would offer side effects, not even Baytril if given correctly. Most pigeon prescribed medicines are well tolerated by the birds. Anything not well tolerated should not be given.

Thats an incorrect statement to a certain degree. Fanciers can have resp in their lofts and they wouldnt know unless they have tested or over observed their birds, the birds fly well around the loft and train ok. The first they know is when they start to experience losses while racing due to the extra exerts and stress. This is a reason why many "preventative" treat, the exact same as they would for cocci, canker and worms.

Thats how i was looking at it mick . i just want to give them the best chance i can when training.

some agree some don`t as was expected ,this was giving as helping hand not as treatment ! but it shows the differance of opinion when you have top fanciers on both sides of the devide.

can i ask how many treat for canker/cocci/para before the breeding or racing season ,i personally see no harm in it if thats what the fancier think makes them go.

Colin there are not many top flyers that dont preventative treat for resp, or would admit to it!

Resp can be contagious just a couple of days after contact and can be contagious as long as they have symptoms. It takes very little for it to be passed on, and the racing baskets are a perfect place. As i said before most dont even know their birds have it.

you are dead right mick we are a very secret lot ;) ornisol can be given 2 days before basketing so it cant have any side affect !!
