i am into my 3rd race of the season and so far it has been a disaster, the first race was from 74 miles i sent 22 and got 19, had 13 in half an hr, the 2nd race i think was the killer blow which happened last sat being the 24th of april, we were meant to be in 1 place then a larger fed brought their birds to a closer point because of rain and a very very overcast, that was fine the 3 organisations in the locality waited till 2 o clock and held over, our fed on the other hand let go at half 12 from a 75 mile race, at 6 o clock there were 8 birds clocked out of 180, i got 11 out of 17,this fed then called off this weeks race on thurs then after words put it back on sunday, every1 else went on sat early,i sent 4 and got 2 the winner taking two hours 50 mins for 100 odd miles, i am now left with 12 birds, 2 of which are injured for the season out of a 26 start, i am considering packing it in as all the effort and money you put in then this happens

its hard building up a good team , you have to take the sweet with the sour stick in there , theres no instant sucess but if you stick at it and be patient you'l get there :)

As said already, you need to keep going, you will experience a lot more lows along the way, however whenever a high comes along, it,s greathttp://forum.pigeonbasics.org/public/style_emoticons/default/tongue.gif

maybe so mate never lost as many b4 tho, and they're not sick and get loads of training, ud be half afraid to either train or race them at this stage, i only got back into them last year, the majority being yearlings, maybe i should take my time with them in the building process

Hes bang on. Two years ago i lost 15 younguns when the local dreg lost control of two japanese akita dogs and they made straight for the loft and ripped their heeds off. Balanced that up wae the national tickets won which has got tae be the best feelin in pigeon racin!

It would put anyone on a downer, you winter the team, train & prepare them in early spring for racing only to lose half of them by the third race. Has happened to me a few times, and in the beginning I felt I was starting over again every year with fresh birds & would never get an experienced team together. Only last year I sent 26 to 3rd race and dropped 11, it was a sticky race for everyone, but that didn't make my loss any easier, still irks, so know full well how you're feeling.

Take heart though, from what you are saying, others in the Fed are experiencing much the same losses, so its not as if your basic management is wrong, or that you have health problems. It's maybe that you paid the price for commiting all of your team to the early races which are usually flown when the weather is at its worst (cold & wet). We are coming out of that phase now so hang in there, but be careful of how many you send each week (eggs in one basket) and how far you send them. Have a target distance to send them, meet your target, then stop them for next year. Good luck with your remaining birds.

like a lot of these lads are saying youve got to take the rough with the smooth and be patient thats the key?? i sent 35 last week got them all home but not in the result, this week sent 37 won the race and scored well in the fed but dropped 10 we all have ups n downs set backs and a little bit of glory?? thats pigeon racing

stick at it, things will turn around

Keep your chin up mate, i know how tuff it is, this is my 5th year, and im still trying to build my team up, always mostly yearlings!! but the older ones i keep, i know can handle a bit of pressure, :-) but yes when you get a good result which is prob once or twice a year for me. its a great buzz, but mainly the competition between my son and myself, is what does it for me on a saturday :D
